It's pretty amazing how easy it is too. Just cutting and extending the strut tubes and then dropping the cartridge in after a spacer.

The big concern for me, after watching the entirety of project Binky and considering myself now an expert on things like suspension geometry, would be the suspension geometry and how it would affect my CV joints. Might not be that big of a deal, but still something to put on the list.

I'm gonna be really honest with you now: it is a Mk4 Volkswagen. Your CVs are hosed no matter what. But yeah your camber curve probably ends up all kinds of weird. I am sure the Mk4 community already has bump steer and caster kits that you could use to touch up anything weird that happens.

Half-axles are relatively cheap, I'll just keep a couple on hand Time to go to work, I suppose.

A larger diameter tire also applies more torque to the suspension. Think of your contact patch as the end of a lever, with the radius being the length of the lever. increase the radius, increase the leverage it has on what it's bolted to. That's why fred didn't do a burnout in the monster truck, it likely would have snapped the axle shafts or, being a sterling, spun the axle tubes right out.

InitialDave posted:One thing will be that don't forget, larger diameter tyres will change where the suspension geometry puts itself relative to the important bit, the contact patch, so have a good think about what you need to do with balancing things like steering trail, KPI, wheel offset (gently caress "backspacing", that's for hicks wot durnt wanna rub frame with Super Swampers, relation of mounting face to centreline is what matters) and so on. what loving pisses me off about offset is that it's measured in mm. Percentage of wheel width would be much more logical. No matter what though you need two data points (width, offset, backspacing) to truly determine wheel fitment.

InitialDave posted:Well, you also need to know diameter, so percentage of width is meaningless. You want measurements to work out through trigonometry where the intersection points of suspension geometry with the contact patch will be. True. I was mostly thinking of wheel fitment vs the brakes and axle housing, but you're 100% right about needing that info for contact patch/scrub radius and fender + suspension link clearance.

scuz posted:Half-axles are relatively cheap, I'll just keep a couple on hand Also the only thing I've seen consistently gently caress FWD VW half-shafts is trying to go full throttle at full lock. Most of the rallycrossers here actually fabricate simple steering stops so that they can't quite get full lock when they're donging it up in the mud.

Except when DED does it, they get a pass. Using dually hubs as spacers? Wonderful.

Meh, this is a much cooler H2R video, anyone can pin the throttle in a straight line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSqSmEfeV1k It's at Isle of Man. Also, from the rider quote:Hi all, some great comments here. For the record This was display lap on closed roads during TT 2015 and I saw 218mph on the clock that day but I took my iphone in my leathers used the strava tracking app. This logged me at a max of 206.9 mph!
