I just moved and the place I live now has an awesome not-Harley motorcycle dealer - that alone is pretty exciting.

They also have a 2016 Africa Twin that is basically brand-new (500 miles) that I could probably get for $9k. I already have a CB500X, and I like the style bike quite a bit, just ready for something a bit bigger I think. Would that be a good option for an upgrade? And is that a decent price on it? It looks like they run about $13k new, but I don't have a good sense for bike prices yet.

Most of the USA actually. Either that or leaving it parked in the garage for a decade. There's a huge subset of people who think they want to ride motorcycles but actually don't, once they try. And of course, they buy brand new, and of course they buy what their friends have. Who do you think buys all those 883 Sportsters brand new?

I went for a test ride on an xsr700, at first wasn’t blown away by it, but had a think about it over the weekend and put a holding deposit down on an ex-Demo.

I was really surprised how well it handles well at low speeds and filtering. And that grumbly engine, upright riding position, and more simple but drastic customisations... perfect.

Have to keep the 125 garaged for another month or two to get a NCB certificate from the insurance, but looking forward to having something... substantial

I've had my xsr700 for 2.5 years now, few things to consider doing, and to watch out for.

The worst thing overall is the finish on the swingarm, and I think its pretty common to MT-07's too. I don't know if later models have solved it, mines a 2016, but the swing arm will rust around the welds and cause the paint to bubble and flake off. It can get especially bad around where the chain guide/guard is. Mine wasn't too bad as its garaged, but if they sit out in the weather it can get pretty bad. My swingarm was replaced under warranty last october and the finish is starting to fail again in a few small spots now. I'm considering getting it powdercoated if it gets worse and i end up keeping it for much longer.

Because of the weak finish on the swingarm, don't use a cup style rear stand, get bobbins. Cup style stands will scrape up the underside of the swingarm and make it worse.

If its an older model (2016's i think), make sure it's had the recalls done for the wiring around the headstock, and for the rear hugger bolts.

I think the stock suspension was updated for 2017-18 models, 2016's are really soft, and wallow mid corner a lot. I'm around ~200lb's geared up and I think thats probably the upper limit for it. There's plenty of options for shocks and springs, all the MT-07 stuff fits too.

The bike is basically an MT-07 underneath, just with a different rear subframe, so parts are pretty interchangeable. Speaking of the subframe, you can remove everything from the seat back to make a short stubby single seater, but you'll need to fab up a plate holder and indicator/tail light bracket.

Definitely get the speedo re-locator bracket. The standard position is right on top of the bar clamps and its basically right under your nose and hard to see. the bracket pulls it forward so it sits above the headlight. It'll sit behind any of the screens too (I have the aluminium 'number' plate and it fits fine).

If you change the bars for something a bit lower and more forward, you might want to look into getting some adjustable rearsets/footpegs too. I changed my bars to an LSL X bar and now I lean a little more forward I'm starting to feel like my feet are too far forward now.

The standard Pirelli Phantom tires are fine all rounders, but I found them to be a little vague, and felt pretty numb in the wet. I got around 6k miles from the rear then swapped them for some Road 5's.

if you're wanting to do any offroad whatsoever I wouldn't buy a non adventure sports AT as the regular models have some uhh big suspension issues

the AT is a pig though. way heavy and pretty underpowered for being a liter bike. at least the adventure sports version looks cool and doesn't have lovely forks though. so if its that model I'd buy it

They’re my heroes, because I’m currently perusing some BMW R nineT’s that have about 250 miles on them on cycle trader and yet they’re about $2-3k less than the brand-new models.

Also I think BMW way overestimated their market for these bikes because there’s a huge number of them floating around US and they all seem to be on a fire sale or listed as “clearance” in the Midwest. Meanwhile, all the reviews I’ve read said it’s a drat decent bike.

Good to know.

It’s a 4 month old ex-demo 2019 model with 450 miles on the clock, and a flat seat.

I’ve already got a huge list of stuff I want to change, but I think the speedo bracket will be the first on the list. I can’t say I was a fan of its placement on the test ride.

Good to know about the rust, it’s summer and garages overnight, so I’ll have to wait... who am I kidding it’s loving England, it’s gonna rain. hopefully they fixed it in the 2019 iteration, if not I’ll push for a respray under warranty.

Sold the Duke 390 to a French gentleman who looks straight out of the Darkar.

Which means, bike search :(

I have 3 completely different options:

- F800R: My friend bought one and I kinda like it. Except of the dreaded 5000 rmp vibe stuff which seems to be fixable. The one I am looking at has around 2,000 miles and it is a 2010 model year for a steal. Top contender.

- 990 SMT with Brazzers Stickers: I think it might be too big of a jump from a 390 Duke and is by far the most expensive. But it has carbon akras and low milage and Angel GT's to cancel the idiot stickers and it is well maintained. Expensive as gently caress, fast as hell and way over my budget.

BMW g650gs : Horrible but practical choice.

I'd like a decent bike to tour and have some fun, not a lot of commuting and I tend to get bored with bikes easily. The SMT seems perfect but is just so expensive and such a powerful bike for me. The F800 looks like the sweet spot between those two but can I see myself owning it for 2 years?

I dunno what the market is like where you are, but I'm gonna suggest looking for a late model multistrada 1100 (before they grew the beak). If you've got a decent selection and not much ducati tax, they're fantastic bikes with just the right amount of power for the street and they're pretty tidy sized. Just... try not to look at the front of them too much.

I am in Punta Cana, so SEVERLY limited selection. I also want a bike with ABS which makes things harder as well.

The multistrada model you're talking about is fairly common. I've seen a few but they're so ugly...

Also KTM Brazzers Johnny Sins is willing to negotiate the 990 SMT which both excites me and worries me.

Ok, but you’ll get it anyways because it’s a super fun bike to ride and if you have to own only one bike vehicle it does the job very well.

Shits expensive to maintain and own though. I did everything up to valve clearances myself, and still. My 2013 had several weirdo poo poo break on me. The shift lever would constantly (ok twice in one season) vibrate loose when riding, leaving me stuck in like second gear or some nonsense. The clutch slave cylinder was in the middle of disintegrating. I’d have clutch oil seeping out of it all the time, being blown all over my legs. Every bolt involved in maintenance is made out of very soft metal, I’ve snapped or stripped a ton. This is in Michigan, where horrible climate seizes everything. My rear axle swelled up once and had to be uh, very forcibly removed and replaced. Kickstand bracket broke when I was getting off the bike, sending us both to the pavement. Key broke off in the ignition, ignition broke during extraction, replaced the whole thing. Rear ABS malfunctioned, had to turn it off at the start of every ride or it would pulse weird and fail.

All this and more - gas mileage is garbage, you’re getting 130 miles out of a 5 gallon tank and the bike will never break 140mph. I rode mine across the US and loved it while I had it but I can definitely say now that i was forced to let it go that I’m kind of glad. It should have been remarkably telling that when I got back from my cross country trip that I just wanted to play with my DRZ.

Yeah I'm looking to do distance touring since I live in a tropical island with roads like this:

All roads for which an SMT would be perfect. But I would have to go over budget and maybe deal with the stuff you're talking about.

Wish I could a nice FJ09, but those command a pretty penny here and there aren't any on sale.

I'll think about the SMT but again, it's too much cash and it has too much power for what is basically a toy.

Thanks for the info all. Keep you posted.

I was considering the F800 due to how well it fits me and how comfy the seat was but I guess I can't have it all.

Yeah the PNW is a weird place for things like that. I always love when I hear the stories of guys back in the midwest buying bikes for a few hundred bucks and getting them up and running with a new piston ring and spark plug. I feel like this is how every kid I grew up with got a bike. I bought my bike last year for $2800 (07 WR250F made street legal by previous owner) but it took a few months of looking and waiting for the right bike to come along. I looked at a quite a few different bikes and $3k is a weird budget where you can find gold or you can see a lot of trashed and clapped out bikes.

As for the XT225/250, You can buy a brand new one from the dealer for $5k. $2500 for a 15 year old bike thats been dropped and who knows what else, or 5k for a brand new one. Not that the XT would be my first choice of bikes for $5k but its out there. If you just want a bike that screams tractor ... TW200.
