Probably with some regulation that makes it so drivers can't dodge fares just because someone has the wrong skin color / gender / is going to the wrong neighborhood. Uber was a god send for me in NYC because not being 100% white and trying to get a taxi from Manhattan to a rougher part in Brooklyn was extremely hard especially at night. With that said, the medallion system is a joke, it basically is a government created monopoly.

Yeah the taxi medallion system is designed top to bottom to exploit poor immigrants, just in a different way than the rideshares.

Enigma89 posted:Uber was a god send for me in NYC because not being 100% white and trying to get a taxi from Manhattan to a rougher part in Brooklyn was extremely hard especially at night. It was also a god send in southern Nevada because taxis don’t care about leaving downtown when there’s a never ending stream of drunks moving between casinos who occasionally tip $100. The state tried making licenses that had limited hours in the tourist corridor to try to serve the surrounding community, but that wasn’t successful. In addition, tourists who have never been to the city before now don’t have to give direct navigational instruction to experienced taxi drivers who deliberately take inefficient routes between common places to drive up fares. Part of the problem was the old Vegas mob left the casinos and seemingly moved into the industries that support the casinos, so taxis always had this “eyy, gently caress you” attitude to the public and the media and the government calling out their scams.

Just so people are clear the reason why Taxis suck is that they prey on immigrants with loans for medallions where they lie about the terms and they are essentially set up so they never can be paid off and you'll work your entire life for next to nothing and probably suicide, which is not a joke and happens quite a lot. The entire thing is, top to bottom, a scam to make money for banks at the expense of the lives of immigrants.

Yeah it's a ridiculously exploitative system where the medallions get sold for huge sums because the amount of them issued is so limited, so new drivers take out massive loans to buy them then spend most of their career paying them off, hoping to sell them off to finance their own retirement. Just because Uber is bad doesn't mean what it replaced was good. To say nothing of how generally lovely to ride in cabs could be. I suppose I'm fortunate that the time in my life when I was most likely to be going out to bars regularly more or less overlapped with the VC-subsidized Uber/Lyft era before it all came crashing down, which looks increasingly likely. I guess us youngish-millenials have had at least one instance of good timing in that. Fill Baptismal fucked around with this message at 01:12 on Aug 21, 2020 |

Im fine with that too. I'm just saying that lots of people literally think that Lyft/Uber and whatnot are successful profitable businesses. It's a possible PR loss for Metro

Eh... I don't think this is an accurate take? So According to the CA 1st Appellate District docket for case A160706 (If that link doesn't work, go here and search that case number): On 8/10 Superior Court Judge Schulman, who ordered Lyft and Uber to reclassify their drivers, gave them a temporary stay to file their appeal once they indicated the planned to do so; they filed a request for an Emergency Stay on 10/17, with 2463 pages of exhibits (Honestly I don't know how to get a hold of CA legal docs like I do on Pacer; I wish Court Listener supported this). Bunch of people were filing amici briefs ("friend of the court" letters from non-parties for, against, or neutral to each party), and the court didn't resolve any of this until 8/20, where they decided to temporarily halt the reclassification order while giving Uber and Lyft time to file. Here's the quote of the order filed.quote:On August 10, 2020, the trial court issued a preliminary injunction enjoining Lyft, Inc. (Lyft) and Uber Technologies, Inc. (Uber) from classifying their drivers as independent contractors and from violating certain laws. Both Lyft and Uber have appealed the order, and the trial court stayed the injunction for ten days to allow them to seek relief in this court. Lyft (in case No. A160701) and Uber (in case No. A160706) have each petitioned this court for a writ of supersedeas. The People have filed an opposition to the petitions. The petitions for writ of supersedeas are hereby consolidated for purposes of decision. The petitions are granted and the preliminary injunction is stayed pending resolution of Lyft and Uber's appeals, subject to the condition that, by 5:00 p.m. on August 25, 2020, Lyft and Uber shall both file written consents to the expedited procedures specified herein. If Lyft and Uber do not both file such written consents, the stay shall expire at 5:00 p.m. on August 25, 2020.

I'm sure at some point a legislator has considered putting together a bill to form emergency fire brigades or similar. And then they thought about the angry phone call the Assembly Speaker was going to get from the fire association, sighed heavily, and shelved the idea.
