I should do stuff, but eh. I have a lot of impression work built up on my computer. I read one of those Zim comics once, trying to do every character's voice. But like, what do I do with that? I dunno! I tried reading that Voice Acting thread, but it's not much in the way of tips but more of "here's stuff I did". Which is fine. And that long intro OP has that really lovely "Oh you think just because you can do a voice, you can be a voice actor? NOPE! WRONG! SUCK MY DICK BITCH!!!"

I feel bad for people that want to get into voice acting because from what I can tell it's even harder to get into than normal acting and if you make it you won't get any where near a comparable amount of respect and money.

How to make it big in voice acting: 1. Become rich and famous as a normal actor. 2. Get hired to voice like a muskrat, or a poop or something.

I did voices for radio shows and animations that the mutual group made. It's all about building a portfolio of the different voices you can do, examples of range, etc. Personally, I find the voicework exhausting, since I have a limited range, and stuck to writing, concept art and animation. Now that Flash is pretty much dead, I don't know how to animate anymore. Here's a video SungWon made that's become huge (it popped up on my Facebook yesterday). He does a lot of videogame work now, which is his dream job.

I really wanted to do a Fan Fic reading thing, but that's been done a billion times. I used to do streams of it, and it was a blast. It was a lot of fun when I had to try and learn how to do do a character's voice in the span of a few minutes.

FreudianSlippers posted:How to make it big in voice acting: The thing is there are people that get lots of work only as voice actors but once the industry have found a guy that is good for a certain sound, they will hire them every time they need that sound. Are you a black woman? Oh well, Cree Summers exists and they'd rather hire her. Like people complain someone like Tress Macneille doesn't have range but she actually has tons of range it's just a) she's always asked to do the same few things b) she was the voice of like every female cartoon character in the 80s so you're just sort of used to everything she's got

Also people seem to last pretty long. Frank Welker is 71 and he's been doing the voice of Fred in Scooby Doo in literally every version since the original in 1969. That and about a 100 different other characters.

In the summer my family always gives the garbage men (I believe you'd called them "bin men") drinks and they always react like we're the only ones who acknowledge that they are in fact, people. glam rock hamhock posted:The thing I wonder is why all the rock radio stations around me play Cumbersome by Seven Mary Three so much. And I'm saying this as someone who was once standing in a store gleefully making fart sounds with my mouth for at least 30 seconds before I realized that someone was standing near me and that's not a thing people do in public. Being a working voice actors is probably a bit like being a character actor in that you probably don't get payed much per job, comparatively speaking, but the trickle of jobs is much steadier than for the stars so you do pretty well for yourself.

The best thing about rude customers is that it gives you a chance to be the hero. On many occasions when I was in retail, as soon as I was (finally) finished with the rear end in a top hat of the day, the next customer went out of their way to be polite and nice to me just to spite the rear end in a top hat. I'd always do a little something extra for them. Even better when it was a customer where I/we made a mistake and they were 110% chill about it. I actually had someone where I accidentally shorted their order, then quickly remedied it. He gave me a tip and thanked me for taking care of it quickly.

Is the Mothman Prophecies, the book, any good? As a gift for a friend of mine who is pretty deep into paranormal/occult/conspiracy stuff. I already got a delightful little book called Alien Abduction Surival Guide which is full of crude illustrations of space aliens but I couldn't choose between Mothman and a book called "Exopolitics: The Implications of the Extraterrestrial Presence". Which sounds fun but I think two alien books might be a bit too much. I´m also getting him a book about ghosts, curses and hauntings that claims the Titanic was sunk by a mummy's curse and has a, probably totally unlicensed, still of Vincent Price in skeletal face from Madhouse on the cover.

I loved it, more for the reactions and the interpretations than me getting to read out loud, but it's a great way to learn the flow of prose. edit: FreudianSlippers posted:Is the Mothman Prophecies, the book, any good? Not horror or overtly paranormal, but has your friend read Pynchon? He's just phenomenal at capturing the paranoia and overwhelming unknown of conspiracies, while being a great writer, whether he wants to be funny, disturbing, romantic, etc. Most of his books have paranormal subplots, like Gravity's Rainbow (WW2 occultism) or Inherent Vice (astrological implications is a reoccurring motif, there's a whole story about trying to score weed from a ghost via Ouija Board, etc.), but they aren't the main focus. Librivox is a site/organization that hosts audiobooks of public domain works done by volunteers. I recently listened to a collaborative audiobook version The Island of Dr Moreau, which had a different reader for each chapter. Quality varied wildly. There are clearly no standards at all. So that would be an easy place to start.

Top Gun's a weird movie. It's a genre that has been completely obviated by CGI. It's a barebones drama with some charismatic characters, but it's all kind of just hung on the pillar of military hardware porn. And, of course, due to needing the cooperation of the US Navy, it's got no teeth of any kind.
