I bought this thermal camera on 11.11. As it was over 150EUR, I was supposed to do the tax/customs myself, but the store took like a week to send it so I was (still am) on vacation with poo poo internet access when it arrived. I'd have to pay at least $50 in VAT and duties on it, but I didn't respond to their request for invoices and they estimated the value themselves at like $40. There's no way I'd have the balls to low-ball (aka defraud) them like that lol. Too bad I'm still out for almost a week though before I get to play with it.

Did anyone get one of those little record player air fresheners? I'm wondering if they actually move or if they smell overpowering or anything else bad.

Yes

They are pretty cool. They certainly move.

The freshener lasts maybe 5 minutes after opening the bag. (If that)

But you can always by air freshener spray for your car tree that you can spray the disks with.

Hikvision is trash anyway, we have some of it at work. Looking for security cameras on the cheap, try Reolink. Really easy to use software.

Is there a serviceable Cricut knockoff anyone can recommend? I wanna be able to make my own stickers

Oh yeah, Hikvision's desktop software is terrible, but their firmware isn't so bad and I have a bunch of their cameras already. Reolink's firmware seems to be more picky about ONVIF SOAP requests (I've been making my own CCTV software and I haven't got theirs working yet). I actually already tried a Dahua door panel and both its SIP support and ONVIF support are broken (the latter, for all the responses to "get capabilities" that should include URLs to specific endpoints for getting video/etc., it has the string "http" instead of the real IP/domain it's meant to be. I didn't even bother trying to work around that due to the SIP calling being broken). Hikvision supposedly also have typos in their ONVIF support for the names of functions and type member variables but not in any of the functions I've needed so far.

The Reolink I have is a PTZ one, it has crappy zoom but is fine otherwise (high speed motors, so PoE+). I also have a PTZ Sunba which has terrible firmware and is the worst camera of all (the webpage has no functions at all, all settings must be changed by using the onscreen menu, accessed via PTZ, which doesn't work very well). It has amazing zoom though, and is also high speed, is quite sensitive (which is good, as somehow the IR lamp broke and I had to turn it off) and surprisingly for having no web UI beyond network settings it also fully supports ONVIF.

The other thing that really annoys me is both Reolink and Sunba PTZ cameras don't support the "absolute positioning" ONVIF PTZ profile, where you can tell them exactly where you want them to go and they'll do it, even though the hardware must support it (as both cameras support presets. They'll even return to where they were pointing after a reboot where they test their motors by spinning around, so they know).

Some cheap brands still make okay boards. The main thing is the switches. The cheap keyboards won't have too many features or sound dampening or anything but if you just want mech switches there's brands like Royal Kludge, Havit, etc on Amazon and probably from other sellers, too.

I know this is the aliexpress thread, but I picked this Havit board up for $40 on amazon a week back and it's decent.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B085ZDXGZW
I mostly got it for the rounded over spacebar and PBT keycaps but the unusual layout is alright, too. The main downsides are no lighting and soldered MX Red switches (I prefer clicky). A lot of the higher end boards have hotswap sockets now so you can pull out switches and put in different kinds, but even those are $100 or sometimes less, depending on what you're buying.

Lord Stimperor posted:

You are the psychopath they designed this layout for???

No bur seriously how does that layout work in practice?

The layout mostly works fine but it has 3 major issues:

1. The media key functionality is on the left hand side F keys, so you need to press the Fn key with your right hand and the volume/mute/etc. keys with your left, I see a lot of compact keyboards making this mistake

2. The cutdown 10key pad is missing the arithmetic functions (also the ENTER key, but it's close enough to the regular ENTER key that it doesn't matter so much)

3. The biggest one is that the Delete key is a SHIFT (not Fn) combo that doesn't work when not on Windows 10+, I don't know how they thought it was acceptable to not include a dedicated Delete key, something every standard TKL keyboard has.

Also the keyboard is kind of hollow feeling for its weight, but this isn't surprising for the price, which really is quite low for getting (non removable) Cherry MX clone switches.

But you're right, something closer to a Cherry 1800 design would be much better and only take up another half inch in width, for example here's a Royal Kludge keyboard with an 1800 style layout, clicky removable blue mechanical switches, USB passthrough, AND a volume control, too bad it has reviews that mention missing keystrokes, a test no keyboard should fail, let alone an $80 keyboard...

It looks like the big downside of that 1800 layout is the short single-width 0 key on the 10key, that would really take some getting used to.

Is this a mistake though? In typing classes you're taught to always hit the modifier key with one hand and the letter with the opposite (ie ctrl c should use left hand for c and right side ctrl) which was my understanding of why there's two shifts and two ctrls

It's done differently on different keyboards since there's no standard for media controls. I have a Durgod kb with them in the same positions as the Havit keyboard (volume on F5-F9), Keychron with them on F9-F12, Kono keyboard with them on F10-F12, Logitech G915 with separate buttons and a volume roller. It's just whatever they want to do. Most of the nicer mechanical keyboards (none of the ones I listed) that have been made recently will run some open source firmware like QMK or have control software so you can pretty much assign everything to whatever you want, including different layers for multiple functions on the same keys as well as functions for tap vs. hold on some keys, and stuff like that.

We have a keyboard thread which is a good place to talk about keyboards and really get into the minutiae if you guys want instead of aliexpress. Ali is a good place to get keycap sets, though.

Those considerations weren't a factor in my typing classes in 1994. Sure we used computers in those classes, but they might as well have been typewriters.

So yeah my ctl and alt keys are always left hand.

the problem is in the USA, every single provider has discontinued 2g bands and tmobile was the last hold out, with a planned shutoff at the end of year. maybe this one uses 3g

I almost replied about the cute little Android phone that it was only 3g, which is likewise almost extinct in the US. My CPAP no longer transmits data wirelessly because of that.

Not to mention I just can't imagine using a no-name Android device unless it was on a throwaway account with no ties to my actual name or anything else. Name-brand cellphones are enough of a security risk for me.

Not talking about CTRL or ALT modifiers, I'm talking about the Fn modifier, to get media key functionality out of the F keys. It's better to be able to adjust the volume with one hand, rather than 2, just as you could if there were actual dedicated media buttons.

Anyway I found a keyboard cheaper than the Havit with pretty close to an 1800 layout, backlit keys, detachable cable, volume Fn keys on the right side, and mechanical switches - comes in both blue clicky and red linear versions:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09N35D3NM

For a cheaper price and only one cm wider than the Havit, it seems like a better deal for saving space

Oh, thanks for pointing that out. I wasn't like immediately ordering it but it's good that you brought this to attention.

It might be a bit less of an issue here though, if my phone gets hosed in like the US or Europe it's no big deal, but I'm on a trip in Western Africa where I'd need the backup more and I'm pretty sure they're still cool with 3G (and 2G for that matter). Still, I'll have a look if there are more compatible options.

Not too concerned about the security, I do have an anonymous throw-away account I use for all sorts of spam-bait purposed anyway.

E: looking a bit more, I think the dumbphone would be pretty useless in anything but the worst emergency if anyway, even it works. No way to check a map, book a hotel, etc. An actually useful smartphone with Android 10, 4G, more memory and a bigger battery (at a cost of an extra few mm and :20bux:) seems to be the the Soyes XS12: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004355066324.html
