Also a lot of them use Christianity to justify whatever prejudices and political positions they hold. If those prejudices and positions are held by someone who happens to be non-Christian (or at least non-practicing), then that someone can still be considered as unwittingly doing the Lord's work.

I remember how in 2016 lots of people were claiming Trump represented the rise of a more "moderate" conservatism, but a lot of that supposed "moderation" was because you had fewer conservatives bothering to cite the Bible to justify their usual talking-points.

It's important to remember that avowedly secular, "facts not feelings" rhetoric can easily be used to justify racism, misogyny, xenophobia, and the like. You have self-styled "race realists" invoking "science" and "reason" to justify their racism and anti-Semitism, and you have individuals who don't identify with any religion but still jerk off to Hans-Hermann Hoppe's call for the "physical removal" of socialists and other undesirables from society.

A lot of people seem to view their religion as an excuse to be assholes to other people, to not feel bad about anything they do because god has got them covered, and to use lots of cool mystical sounding words and phrases to yell at people which makes all of the prior sound less mundane than it is. And because it's a communal activity they get to make friends who are also into all that stuff. As a technology it satisfies the need for community, for meaning, for defence against the difficulties of life, as all religions can do, but specifically all of the methods by which it does those things involve being a huge piece of poo poo to everyone around you. Your community is based around right wing political signifiers and ritualistic condemnation of the outgroup as manifestations of the supreme supernatural evil in the universe. Your meaning is believing you are a combatant in a war against said supreme evil, and your defence against difficulty is that you can never do any wrong because you are chosen by the supreme good in the universe who will reward you both in life and death as long as you minimise doubt about that prospect.

It's an interesting and I think inevitable evolution of religion, into the most individually affirming and empowering social technology for people who are afraid of and angry about everything.

I know a lot of people like this. One of them I work with said about the Titanic submersible disaster that they shouldn't have gone to the site because "it's evil". I presume meaning because Satan did it or something. It's like anything bad is "The Devil did it". Along similar lines, when something like a tornado wipes out their house, they'll always say "well, thank god me and my family are still alive and protected us and I'm always like "Motherfucker, why aren't you mad at god for hitting your loving with a tornado in the first place?" I guess the devil specializes in tornados and icebergs.

There's also a LOT of crossover between MLM's like AMway and christian prosperity gospel. Very cult like. Anyone who tries to tell you that it's a scam is the the devil trying to sway you from pursuing the good life.

Martin Luther. There was a big war over it and everything. There were plenty of other differences as well, but Sola fide is one of the defining differences between Lutheran descended Protestants and all other forms of Christianity.

Yea it represents the shift from feudalism, where morality is defined as a series of contractual responsibilities in a hierarchical world, to capitalism, where morality is viewed in idealist and individualist terms. You just got to have the right ideas in your head and you'll be saved. And since the 60s those right ideas have morphed into not even being about believing in Jesus but into being on the right side of the culture war. That's how Trump can be beloved by so many evangelicals.

C'mon, guys, freepers don't give a gently caress about any of that "theology" crap. They're Saved, meaning that they're reality's Good Guys for whom God will forgive everything and reward them eternally in Heaven. This gives them permission to hate and oppose the Unsaved, the Bad Guys, who are Satan's puppets on earth, actively transing your kids and making you pay higher taxes and speaking languages other than English (all sins on an equal level). Society should entirely revolve around catering to and supporting the Good Guys, while actively punishing the Bad Guys with the force of law. Anything that doesn't facilitate this is Unchristian and needs to be complained about at every opportunity.

Also, not that I've ever done it, but if you examine the average freeper invoking Sola Fide and what they actually believe, they 100% believe in salvation by works. It's the whole "it doesn't matter if you believe in and accept Jesus' sacrifice for you on the cross, if you ever affirm any LGBTQ person, your faith is worthless and you are not a Christian" Evangelical mindset. You'd think that someone accepting the single most important sacrificial act ever committed by literal God on earth wouldn't be instantly undone by using someone's preferred pronouns, but hey.

not that Jesus actual words matter, but in Matthew 7:21 he explicitly says " “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

Sounds like works and not just faith might be important to him.

Herman Merman
Jul 6, 2008
Unsurprisingly, protestant theology is a bit more nuanced than just Sola Fide, but often it seems to converge on a No True Scotsman type argument, i.e. only *true* faith is enough, and good works are viewed as an outward sign of true faith in a person.

Oh, no, that's easy. Their salvation is by faith. Everyone else? Well just because they said they believe in God doesn't mean it's true. They just believe they have the ability to determine other people's true beliefs. So it's not the act of using preferred pronouns that damns the person, that's just the sign that shows the Freeper that the other person never actually believed in the first place. The Freeper's interpretation of the other person's faith is more important to the world than the other person's, because these fuckers never developed theory of mind.

It's just a twisted inversion of "faith producing good works" or good work being evidence of faith. Freepers have faith, therefore their works are good, rather than Freepers have faith, therefore they do good. It's kinda hosed up theologically and morally!

But yes, it's just "I am a Good Guy, so everything I do is Good".

the article posted:

MSNBC contributor Claire McCaskill said Monday on “Deadline” that there were so many weird things about the supporters and rallygoers of former President Donald Trump.

McCaskill said, “Yeah, and there are so many things that are weird about the people who have this undying loyalty to Donald Trump. There is two categories. There’s the category of the cowardly Republicans who are afraid not to be for Donald Trump publicly, even though behind his back, they think he’s a horrible person, a horrible leader, and a horrible, horrible president. Then there’s the bucket of people who really believe in this guy.” Host Nicolle Wallace said, “Who is in that one?”

McCaskill said, “The people at his rallies.”

Everything about it made me sick.

What percentage of people who have ever been held in contempt of congress had to serve jail time for it????

I remember Eric Holder pretty much gave Congress the finger when he was found in contempt. As usual, our party didn’t want the vision of a black AG being arrested and thrown in jail.

I think Congress has a 9% favorability rating, leaving 91% of America contemptuous of them

That's such 1991 thinking. Congress (and all of our elected officials, frankly) are puppets of Permanent DC. The disdain should be for the Permanent DC, not for the puppets.

On January 21, 2025 President Trump will create a new cabinet level position, called Grand Chief Inquisitor for the Liquidation of the Biden Regime.

Trump will appoint Steven K Bannon and give him the full might and power of the USA Federal Government to arrest and imprison all the scum buckets in the Puppet Biden axis of evil regime.

A correction is coming, with severe retribution to follow. /spit

Said Inquisitor should also charge the numerous covered individuals guilty of insurrection as provided by the 14th, and after at least as good of due process and in at least as fair a venue as has been used against Trump, convict them thereof and thus remove them from their varied offices without further actions by voters or legislative impeachments required. Further judicial penalties may still be applied as merited. There’s no other practical way to remove all the judges and legislators who have proven themselves unfit for office. Many of the southerner officials who left the union were less guilty as many such still adhered to the principles under which the nation was founded and honestly thought the then current government had forsaken them. Those guilty now, despise the founding principles.

FReeper 'Uncle Miltie' Volunteers for the Israeli Defense Forces for 3 Weeks

Uncle Miltie posted:

I'm at Seatac Airport (SEA) at the gate for my 10:00 A.M. flight LY9468 through Newark to Tel Aviv. I'm volunteering for the IDF through their organization "Sar-El". Usually, volunteers do warehousing work on base, live in the barracks, and eat with the soldiers.

I believe in transmogrification. For three weeks, I'm freeing up an 18-year-old Israeli kid with an M16 to go into Gaza and kill ham rear end. I'm 62 and fit, and I can do the warehousing work that a soldier would otherwise have to do, and they can go to the front. Through the magic of transmogrification, I'm on the front lines of the fight for Western Civilization against the savage for 3 weeks.

You can do this too! Here's the Sar-El site:

SAR-EL - The National Project for Volunteers for Israel

https://www.sar-el.org/

Here's their Purpose statement:

"What is the purpose of Sar-El? Sar-El supporters come from around the world and from within our country to contribute to the security of the State of Israel by assisting on IDF bases in a logistical support role.

It is a unique volunteer experience fostering new friendships, greater understanding and the creation of a cultural exchange between Israel and the volunteers’ home countries.

Sar-El welcomes friends of Israel as volunteers, many of whom become “goodwill ambassadors” for our country. We are the only volunteer program that situates volunteers directly on IDF bases to work side by side with our soldiers."

They make this reasonably easy to accomplish. They have 1, 2 and 3 week programs. You have to get there, and arrange your own weekends, so it's not cheap.

There is a certain point in life where I cannot just flap my jaw and be a keyboard warrior. This is my time, and this is my way to do something concrete.

I'm arriving early, staying late, and have weekends off. I'll have lots of time to hang with the locals in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. My situational awareness is good, and the real threat level is relatively low (knives and car rammings are less frequent than shootings in Chicago!) It's my first trip to Israel, so it should be interesting.

Y'all keep the FReeper "allahu akhbar chorus" in line while I'm gone (they know who they are, and most of you do too). I'll be dark during the Israeli work week (Sun-Thu), as internet use is not allowed on base. I may check in on Friday or Saturday from the city. I'll do an after-action report on the plane back through Boston on June 10th, op sec being observed.

Keep up the good fight, and FREEP ON!

If I read this correctly, you’re going to take a safe job so an 18 year old can go to the front lines. Super. As an infantry vet, I used to see this quite a bit.

The guy is 62 years old. Give him a break. An American isn't going to be a combat troop during a two or three week stint. Not to mention, there are laws concerning American citizens being part of a foreign military involved in combat operations. And then there's the simple fact about a language barrier. Would you want someone who doesn't speak your language and is 62 years old by your side when you find yourself engaged in a firefight?

I find it ironic that the same people who don't want to live near high-voltage overhead power lines because of the fear of electromagnetic waves causing all sorts of symptoms like motion sickness, dizziness and nausea, nosebleeds, hair loss and 'debilitating' body pains, will by an EV and basically cocoon themselves inside a high-voltage power source.
lol what?

The people who thought that overhead power lines gave you lymphoma are the ones claiming that covid was caused by 5G, the aurora borealis was HAARP being tested, and that EVs are a plot by the WEF to get everyone into 15 minute cities. I don't think they're the EV buyers.

And the nominally left wing ones who get way into pastel QAnon are more likely to just ramble on about how there's a car that can run on a gallon of water but the corporations killed the inventor than buying an EV.

That was how David Icke went from weird but basically okay "we can't go on ruining the planet like this" Green Party guy to "there are 50 races of alien lizards that rule the galaxy" tinfoiler, and he's full on "electric cars are so that the government can turn your vehicle off with the satellites" now. It's your quote-unquote pollution control!
