Crates seem like a way people with to much money and no ability to make a coherant decision about what they want to buy will subscribe to

Or for absentee parents to get something for their kid every few weeks without having to put any thought into it at all, I guess.

I wonder how many of these crate businesses depend on people buying subscriptions for friends/family for Xmas or birthdays.

Crates for perfume/cologne samples have gotten kinda popular, although most of them are still "let's buy up old unwanted stock from other companies and sell it before it goes bad" deals.

Yeah I mean that actually seems like a legitimate way to do it. Back before amazon bought woot out and they were just 1 deal a day they actually had decent quality things for a decent discount cause it was legit overstock on sale that someone wanted to get rid of, I feel like you could easily do a crate model for this kind of thing and profit while still giving people a decent deal, but instead it's even more profit for less effort to just load a box with 25-30 "msrp" dollars of garbage like a adventure time shirt 'valued at 20 dollars" you bought for a fraction of that and it's not technically a scam but basically is.

A particularly rubbish one I've seen was the man box. A monthly crate for 40 quid that contains a tie, a lapel pin, a pocket square and a pair of socks. It's like those Christmas gifts for uninterested children to get their Dads.

yea like while gamer crates are dumb I see the appeal of monthly boxes. If they can snag a deal with a supplier to get a bunch of units for a low price, and you don't mind getting a little bit of a surprise (and as long as they don't make it impossible to unsubscribe if you decide their curation is poo poo) they can give everybody a deal and still make some profit everybody wins, and you get to try out products that you may not usually use and discover new things. Something like a model box would be cool... Or like small accessories or actual nice outfits (those services usually let you choose from several options so you don't get anything you don't want) I've actually considered getting one. Really it all comes down to how good they are at getting a good deal and picking their products and some don't seem to just have useless trinkets

I went with lootcrate for awhile and it was mostly poo poo. once and while an ok shirt. I did however buy the mass effect mega crate. it was ok. I got a N7 jacket, some socks, a really awful looking volus "plush" a comic, a car magnet and shot glasses.

after that i never cared or subscribed. sure i like some of those funko pops, you could by 3-5 for the same price. its dumb.

Well I'm pretty sure people have liked Ashens since way before he started doing poo poo Crates. Like, I'm pretty sure nobody in this thread scoured ______ Crate videos looking for the one that really spoke to them, they just liked Ashens and then he started doing crates.

The guy's whole thing has always been "let's point and laugh at cheap garbage and eat weird food" and then Loot Crate and all the knock-offs came along and it followed naturally from there.

:psyduck:

so if you order every loot box in the world you will receive about 23 boxes per day. assuming you can film/edit/upload an unboxing video in about half an hour, thats a full time job.

I have a kid. He wanted a loot crate for his birthday. For him, the waiting was excruciating. Once it arrived, oh god. The only thing I can compare it too is a starving man imagining the most delicious sandwich ever arriving at his door only to be greeted by a bag of poo poo. A literal bag of poo poo. He opened that package and found personified disappointment.

In a way I believe it prepared him for the grim reality of life. A hard learned lesson.
