This was not a good idea.

Totally worth it though.

Indeed they should.

Behold, Advan Racing Siena Generation 2 in 17x8.5 +35

They're a 2 piece wheel too, so I can play with width and offset later on if I want.
They're also stupidly light.
These are going to be the new AutoX/summer wheels.

Slow but steady progress.
Half of the wheels and tires are now swapped over.

It's weird that they look chunkier yet the tires are the same. It's just that the wheels are 0.5" narrower.

The list of things to complete prior to the first AutoX of the season is growing not shrinking.

No turning back now.
$756 all in for the entire season (year). 6 events.
5 Auto-X and 1 Super Auto-X.

My overnight parts from Japan have arrived (and I eventually remembered to take pictures).

New engine mounts.

I love having a hard copy of the factory service manual.

Time to run the positive battery cable the correct way from the trunk along the passenger sill and through the firewall to the engine bay.

RIP my back though. I am 100% going to have to remove the blower motor assembly to get to the clutch master stamping on the firewall for RHD versions in order to drill the hole for the 0 gauge quick release.

As for a small win:

One can never have enough stickers. Especially informative ones.

As is tradition, I am procrastinating on pulling the HVAC blower with another project.

The new water pump.

Out with the old.

In with the new.

This better solve the cavitation problem and the resulting borderline overheating by the end of every AutoX run.

So what am I going to procrastinate with next? I'm thinking engine mounts.

Nice penis pump. Isn't overheating the death sentence for rotaries?

There's "overheating" and then there's Overheating.

Ideal operating temperature for a 13B-MSP is between 85-90C.
I was seeing up to 98C at the end of an AutoX run.
Above 100C is when things start to get dicey and the coolant seals typically start to let go around 105C (220F).

Am I mildly annoyed at Mazda for how they ran all positive 12V power from the battery? Yes, yes I am.
I am not proud of this mess but it will suffice until I rewire everything when a new ECU goes in.

Battery box is finally properly mounted. This would not be possible if the battery would not be a super light weight LiFePO4.

The cables aren't finalized yet. I'm not quite sure how I want to route everything in the trunk yet.

Mazda was kind enough to stamp the firewall for both RHD and LHD configurations.
The clutch master cylinder stamping is the perfect sizing for the bulkhead power connector.

Now I am all out of excuses for pulling out the HVAC blower and everything else in the way for drilling the necessary holes in the firewall.

Then again, they better be since it's just a folded sheet of water cut aluminum.

It lives once again! I didn't short or miswire anything.

(A proper update to follow tomorrow.)

McTinkerson

Right, so proper update time.
My plan of using the super fancy bulkhead connector for the positive battery lead did not survive execution.

As evident by the multiple template traces.

Why?

The blower motor assembly is touching the interior firewall behind the RHD clutch and brake master reliefs.
So there is zero room on the interior side of the firewall for the battery cable and connector if I want to maintain any HVAC. Which I very much do.

Plan B, running it though the firewall(s) immediately below the A/C lines.
Grommets are on order.

Engine bay is all wired up with enough room to start playing around with mounting the ECU and P/S computer to the firewall.

Temporary battery tie down. A more permanent and track tech solution is in the works.

One of the perks of buying a season pass for the AutoX season is not having to worry about number assignments at each event.
Spinny Whoosh has a sale and I couldn't say no to leaning into the John Player Special livery even more.

I hate to ask this, but is there any chance you could give me some order of magnitude dimensions of the engine bay? Maybe like narrowest at frame rails, length, and then shock tower width?

How about the dimensions to the millimeter straight from the OEM body shop manual?

Perhaps :ninja:

The first Auto-X of the season is now two weeks away. Time to get back to tinkering with the tune.

I richened everything up under load by 5%.
VersaTune finally fixed the bug I reported years ago on the fuel cut on decel not working as well!
So now when in gear and I lift off throttle my AFRs actually do go full rich!
That also means fire. Soooooo much fire above 5400rpm when all the injectors are online.
RIP my rear bumper.

Why would you want that? Worse fuel economy and less deceleration when off throttle. Are you sure it was a bug? Fuel cut means turning fuel off...

It's a rotary specific thing. Since the factory oil injection is now fully disabled, which allows me to run full synthetic oil and no longer burn an oil not designed to be, I am running 2 stroke oil in the fuel.
With DFCO enabled, that's measurable time that all rotor seals are now no longer being lubricated.

Side benefit, car shoots fire.

Ok, so you mean the issue was that disabling fuel cut did not do so, but now actually does when you select “disable fuel cut”?

I think I might have to rethink this whole ECU and power steering computer relocation business.

There is no way I can safely extend all of the factory wiring, let alone complete it economically.

New plan, move the coolant overflow, smaller washer fluid reservoir and catch can to the firewall.
Redo the ground and power wiring along with rerouting as much factory wiring as possible to the drivers side and bolting the turbo CHRA to the cross member immediately beside the stock ECU box.
Combined with re-routing some coolant lines and I think I can make all of this work.

Edit: Eventually, I could replace the factory EPAS with a NC1 rack and run an electric P/S pump.

Drove the 8 to work this morning as the roads are completely empty at 0500MDT.
Just in time to get the tail end of the sunrise.

DMS Time Trials has also finalized the track layout for the first Auto-X of the season this Thursday.

This should be a really fun one.
