I really thought we were going to hear Grogu's first spoken word in this episode. It would've made it something other than largely a waste of ~28 minutes' time and a convenient excuse to reuse CGI elements from the last episode.

The live action show is now the kid’s cartoon and the kid’s cartoon is now a high stakes drama. You leaned too hard in both directions, Disney.

This is the way

Mando was a lot of fun this week - back to Giant Monster of the Week. (Although on the bright side, they at least got rid of their giant bird problem.)

Common misconception that; that fun is relaxing. If it is, you're not doing it right.
I had a weird bug with my Disney+, thought I'd share how I fixed it in case it's useful for someone, someday:

This week's episode would do the little Disney logo animation and then pause/freeze there. I could scan through the episodewith the little bar on the bottom but it wouldn't play, rebooting my computer didn't work. Other episodes would play fine, it was only the just-dropped one.

I tried it on my phone in the app and it played... then suddenly I was able to get past the frozen part on my PC and watch it as normal on the big screen.

Hahaha, I thought I recognised the actor but couldn't place him, but nope - not until the credits rolled, anyways!

I liked the episode overall even if the main plot event had very convenient, not very logical rules. I think they've done a pretty decent job narratively setting up Bo Katan's journey to Mandalorian tradwife.

Did we really need to be told 4 times that they couldn't use their jetpacks because it would alert the creature?

Also the idea that there would be a culture that doesn't eat together seems loving ridiculous. People would invent a special eating veil before they'd stop sharing meals.

Also, forcing people to not share meals, which is foundational to building community, is just bad speculative anthropology. Bo-Katan referenced feasting last episode, so hopefully she’ll recognize this as some bullshit.

It felt really weird when they used a wipe transition in the middle of the initial jetpack chase with the monster bird. I get that it signaled the passage of time (since the other side of the cut shows that they'd travelled some distance and their packs had run out of fuel), but it still feels extremely unnatural to wipe from a shot of them flying to another shot of them flying over very similar terrain at a similar time of day.

That's also really confusing to me. The Mandalorians clearly have a huge force, are training, etc, so why don't they move out of the cave system thats surrounded by space dinosaurs and space dragons that are constantly attacking them? A lot of the comments are starting to point out how dumb the Mandalorians are and it's so undeniably true. I know they wanna stay hidden or whatever, but they could do that in a lot of places.

The other thing that is sure to come about, off that episode, is that in a future one we are definitely gonna see Mandalorians riding space dragons. Really going after House of the Dragon, aren't they?

ok, after watching the episode, mainly the first couple seconds of the end credits

the crab creatures Grogu was playing with look a lot like the ones from the Rebel base in Rebels, especially in the end credits sequence. I am wondering if these are meant to be the same planet or maybe crab/spider like creatures can only have so much diversity...

I assume they live there at least in part because of the giant monsters. The armorer gave that whole speech about themselves being forged by hardships as well after all. Maybe she thought they had gone soft living on Navarro and over corrected a bit.

Wanna know how this episode could've been great?

Grogu "grabs" the space dragon mid-flight after it nabs the kid, making it panic and grab the kid in its talons even tighter, threatening his life. Paz pleads with everyone to save his son, but no one wants to risk hitting him with blaster fire. Grogu hears the kid's screams of pain and it makes him remember the culling of the Younglings. We see his angry face for the first time and it pans to the dragon and all you see is it's head snap violently to one side and a horrific *crunch*, causing it to go limp and let go of the kid, letting him be rescued. Everyone's happy the kid's safe, but now everyone *also* knows this cute little green kid can snap your neck like a goddamned twig with his mind - Bo Katan needs to calm everyone's nerves by telling them about the Force and what Jedi could do, since now more than a few in the covert see Grogu as a threat. Later on, when the Armorer is making Grogu his crest, he has another PTSD episode and we finally hear him speak for the first time, even if it's sotto voce.

They also seem to have forgotten the fundamental nature of the Covert; Most of them hide to stay safe while one of them goes out into the wider world/galaxy to make them some scratch (and ideally some Beskar) Bounty Hunting. Din's certainly not doing that now, so one of the others should be out making them money.

Also why and how the gently caress do they not have at least a ship, considering they seem to be on an otherwise-uninhabited planet?

No idea about that, but I forgot that all of them are gradually inching closer to Grogu, until he leaves, after which they all disperse back into the water. I guess his force stuff, possibly life based (based off him healing that one time, and being reincarnated Yoda possibly), makes creatures gravitate towards him. Maybe it's just his species thing that does it. I can't really recall Jedi having a special affinity with living creatures or anything, but I'm not a big Star Wars nerd.

Robot Style
Jul 5, 2009

The spider creatures from Rebels are based on old concept art by Ralph McQuarrie, and the design's been re-used a couple of times. They appeared in Rebels, but they've also already shown up in The Mandalorian, on the ice planet.

The crabs in the episode probably aren't supposed to be the same thing, but are subject to the Star Wars equivalent of carcinization - though instead of everything eventually evolving into a crab, everything eventually evolves into unused Ralph McQuarrie concept art.

I don't believe it myself but it's one of the prevalent fan theories. In this episode they go back to showing flashbacks of Grogu being very protected, more than any other youngling and even having an armed escort waiting to get him off planet. He's clearly special in some kind of way, but that could just be because of his species. I guess they are very powerful with the force naturally. But I think they are leading into Grogu having some kind of special background.
