There were just over 36k auto fatalities in the US in 2019. It's a tiny, tiny number in comparison to COVID

Eh, besides the expected lung damage/organ damage experienced very rarely by severe cases the more common “long COVID” claims are likely the result of pandemic and political anxiety and depression. Instead it seems like the claims of chronic pain, fainting spells, etc., attested primarily by Brown graduates with media careers is going to overdetermine our expectations for the typical long COVID case. That’s not to mention accruing social and career benefits by stealing disability status and being diagnosed with what is essentially morgellons.

This isn't as true as it should be because most people don't give it even a second of thought.

People insist lockdowns don't work even though it's completely nonsensical to argue that avoiding interpersonal contact won't slow the spread of an infectious disease. Most people are smart enough to realize that this is true if they think about it, but nobody wants to think about it because it's going to lead them to conclusions they don't like.

Likewise, people will jump through all kinds of hoops to convince themselves that masks are bad because they don't want to wear masks. They don't "know" masks work because they staunchly refuse to put in the microsecond of mental effort required to accept and internalize that conclusion.

Try to find KF94s if you can, but apparently all the good places are totally out now. I've heard maybe Korean grocery stores in an area with a high asian population might have some.

Otherwise plain old N95s are the next best option, even though they suck to wear a bit more. Digikey, Grainger, Mouser, Allied, etc.. basically any American distributor. Even those places look like they're running a bit low. Honestly I think it's too late to buy good masks in bulk for cheap now. Get what you can and hope for the best. If people miss the boat then double mask with surgical and cloth to seal up the sides of the surgical mask.

It worth a shot IMO since the pre-clinical data is really interesting plus MMR vaccine has been around for years and is not in short capacity in the USA.

The more comprehensive study on MMR with the University of Washing is forecast to complete data collection sometime in August this year.

Depends on how much evolution headroom the virus has (like what kinds of mutations can it acquire that make it more transmissible or immune evasive or more lethal) and all indications are: it's a loving lot. The fact that we've already got Delta Plus and other potentially worse variants in the magazine means that we should expect at least a few more major waves and "a few more" is just what's already locked in, not what could happen if additional variants appear later.

yeah, honestly I would simplify it to "this new variant is infectious like chickenpox, but even more deadly" and "the vaccines don't work after 6 months" (somewhat of an exaggeration but make them honestly believe they should be scared for their life and stop going out after 6 months even though protection is in the 40% range still)

use the leaked CDC slide deck that makes both these points. it's nice to see it all from an 'official' CDC source and it can hammer home the point that the CDC held this information back from us and they should not be trusted at face value. it was only through a random leak that any of us realized just how bad delta was going to get

and if you want to sound like a prescient god, tell them in a month we will be seeing 2-3k deaths a day again and to prepare for it to be emotionally as bad or worse than the winter surge. friends, friends of friends, family, etc. are all going to be experiencing loss
