ravenkult posted:I'm convinced the first song in this trailer is by a post rock band. Help! It's probably not an actual song, but the sort of progression is probably similar enough to pieces of other songs that you just equate them together. My first thought was maybe something by The Calm Blue Sea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPtSrQDckKM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhhfk_1Pwhw Or maybe even En Plein Air: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXU8WFjImuo None of these are exactly it obviously, but I think it's such a familiar sound that it's fairly indistinguishable without the rest of the song. Or maybe this post was just a way to throw The Calm Blue Sea and En Plein Air out there?

I always find it interesting that it's always the really slow bits of post-rock songs that get used in trailers. Like, only intro of Sæglópur was used in the life of Pi trailer when the really loud bit totally would have fit for the ship going down.

This Will Destroy You was also used in the trailer for Moneyball. And I think I heard them in another trailer or two, too. Oh, and imagine my surprise when I heard them in the remake of Prom Night a few years ago!

They played The Mighty Rio Grande over the intro for the best picture Oscar nominees one year too (I think it was 2012). I love that song

I almost had This Will Destroy You booked at my bar, but they usually get between $1200-$1500 a show and wanted a $15 cover charge (we don't charge anything and get cool rear end bands like Wild Cub, Kingston Springs, and New York City Queens). But, it was on a Sunday when we could have risked it and man, I wish we did. It was just too early in our live music project at the time. Maybe some other time. This just reminds me too much of the last venue I booked 4 years ago that I had Cage the Elephant booked for $175 but got shot down by my boss cause our out of state shows weren't doing good business...

Also, welcome to what might be the thread with the the fewest unique posters per post. In other news, I'm doing an experiment, I sent three people mix CDs this swap, with one CD to test whether or not the average person thinks all post-rock sounds the same. On this disc I have included: Riding Alone For Thousands of Miles Grails Laura The American Dollar Polinski The Samuel Jackson Five MAGNETOSCOP. Anybody going to the Austin show having problem with their tickets? I got an email way back that said:quote:We have just been told that the delivery method you chose for the below event is not valid, your tickets are will call only. Which, seems legit. But, I went to try to print off my tickets just incase and it says "We are having problems processing your tickets. Please contact customer service as soon as possible.". Which, maybe the two are related and that's why it says that. I do also worry that I lost that debit card I used to purchase the tickets, so I had to have Bank of America replace it and it has a different number. I still have all of my ID and order number and I was charged for the tickets. Just making sure my poo poo is straight cause I leave for Austin in a few hours (from Arkansas) and the Ticketmaster offices are closed because it's 1:30 AM..

At Bayou Music Center to see Sigur Ros, and holy loving god the opener is boring. It's one dude playing synth that sounds like a mixture of PSX and N64 era soundtracks (but not nearly as interesting) and music you'd hear in educational videos at an aquarium There's a hell of a crowd here and it doesn't seem like anyone's really digging him.

Sigur Ros was......well, I guess the best word to describe it is "magical". I've never smiled so much at any other concert. I was almost moved to tears several times. They played almost every song I wanted to hear and more. It was, in all honesty, one of the best live shows I've ever been to in my whole life. So if you get the chance to see them, do not pass it up under any circumstances. I've got the set list and a video of Saeglopur that I'll post later if anyone's interested.

I am not really the biggest fan of Sigur Ros, but all these positive reports make me excited to see them next week. Tangentially, I realize that I really like the sound of Icelandic post-rock bands, like Sigur Ros, Amiina, Rokkurro, etc. Anyone want to drop some recommendations?

Here's the setlist from Sigur Ros' show in Houston last night:quote:Ytirbord And Saeglopur, which I took on my phone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGDQdSuzpZ4 Video quality's not anything great, but the audio quality is fairly decent. Jonsi's voice is even more goosebump-inducing live than it is on their albums, which you may or may not be able to tell from the video.

Rageaholic Monkey posted:Apparently he did an album with Tim Hecker. I don't know, I've never listened to TH before. Tim Hecker is fantastic. Harmony in Ultraviolet and Ravedeath, 1972 are great drone/ambient albums. To stay on topic, I'm not really a fan of a lot of the post rock bands that are discussed in this thread. I view a lot of bands like Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, and most of the Constellation Records groups as simply following a template put forth by GY! BE's Lift Your Skinny Fists... which is reliant on guitar/drum crescendos and really not much else. I'm very surprised that the post-hardcore and electronic/jazzy/dubby sides of post rock are not discussed here more. Some relatively recent finds that I've really enjoyed are To Rococo Rot, Ganger, Jessamine, and Ui, all of which are more comparable to Tortoise or Stereolab than GY! BE. I feel like this thread is largely dedicated to bands that are still active, and sharing unchecked enthusiasm, rather than helping each other through the genre's vast past.

whooping crane posted:A terrible opinion. I've only heard two bands that I would really say took off from Godspeed, it's an incredibly experimental sound that few other bands can do. Most of what you're thinking of is the stuff after Tortoise was really a thing. I know that general thing you're talking about, but Godspeed is not it.

I feel like this thread is largely dedicated to bands that are still active, and sharing unchecked enthusiasm, rather than helping each other through the genre's vast past. Well, to be honest, for me it's because I loved that stuff when it was around and I don't really spend a lot of time listening to old records because so many new ones are coming out. Of course I loved Tortoise, Jessamine, Tristeza, Hovercraft, early Trans Am, Pan American, Labradford (actually I still listen to Labradford like every week), etc but I'm not likely to talk about that stuff unless someone specifically asks about older music. Every genre is like that. But non-standard post-rock still gets discussed. Do Make Say Think and The Drift have been brought up by me pretty recently, and Maserati gets a lot of play and they're certainly different to the sound you're thinking of.
