Just had my fastest Hush kill yet with Lillith. Ludovico + Conjoined + Parasite + Car Battery + Box of Friends gave me this trinity of 3 floating tears (with 2 smaller tears orbiting each) that absolutely obliterated anything I let them hover on.

edit: just searched the thread for it and:

100% agreed. I just beat Hot Potato today too and the difference between the two is staggering. I feel like the ending bosses for those challenges should have been reversed

CANTRIPPED is one of the more fun challenges and the sentiment I saw was that people wish it went on for a bit longer really.

Hot Potato is awful and needed to have been cut short someplace.

I dunno I just thought it was a fresh take on the format. I enjoyed coming up with a branching strategy to explore outwards and then making the risk/reward call once I ran out of free red key uses. Maybe I got lucky but it only took me four tries to get through. I found it really rewarded creative thinking like how some of the larger levels in the game can have lots of different elements all rube goldberg into a reward if you construct it correctly.

Yeah I feel like Cantripped should have gone at least to It Lives or something. It isn't too difficult to get to Mom on default stats so it really came down to hoarding a bunch of DPS ups while throwing everything else away. If the cards fell about half as often and you had to get further into the game it would have been a lot more interesting.

I've always been iffy on Challenges. Some were pretty fun if plain, most were a pain in the rear end. Most are just not willing to be a challenge that's 'weird/hard/fun gimmick run' or 'completely new gameplay mechanic', and are just plain ugly hard. I like that a lot of that better design energy happened with the Tainted characters at least.

Yeah there's a few that were alright, and some that I wish went on for longer, but nearly every other challenge resulted in me being thankful I'd never have to do that again when I finished.

I lot of the OG challenges could be fun with an update to their loadout and goal.

if tainted cain was cantripped I think people would love that character way more.

Black August

If I was giving the fix, I'd make Tainted Cain like Cantripped as default, replace Cantripped with his basic bag mechanic, and then let his bag become an item in the base game that allows you to switch to dial-an-item mode if you want.

I just finished Red Redemption by finding an Inverted Emperor card and beating the boss it sent me to. I'm okay with that, I don't think I was in shape to take on Mother.

Red Redemption was fairly interesting, definitely way less bad than regular Tainted Jacob. I may have gotten lucky to have never spawned a Tainted Esau, not sure how likely that is with a good search strategy.

Cantripped is in a weird spot where it's pretty fun but that's probably just because it's extremely easy. If you had to actually avoid using cards on some rooms rather than having a massive surplus I think it'd be frustrating.

e: honestly I'm mostly fine with annoying but unique challenges, you only have to do them once. It's the lovely new characters that the game is expecting you to clear 6+ times that suck.

I think Red Redemption would be better if it just gave you unlimited red key uses and turned up the difficulty by bringing in the Mother fight after only 3 floors or something. Maybe add another boss or treasure room to each floor to give you a better chance at getting powerful enough.

Irony Be My Shield
Jul 29, 2012

You need a limit on key uses or else you're just exploring every single room on every floor.

yeah it’s possible to get unlimited key uses through the regular killing esau methods and it’s absurdly overpowered

Easy fix I can think of is to make it so that the more doors you open, the harder the enemies become, until you’re dealing with Cathedral / Chest level rooms.

I do like how Red Redemption mixes up the environments. Wander too far and you stumble into a Downpour or Dross "biome".

Black August
Sep 28, 2003

I think a real unique challenge would be Red Redemption, but you're working your way through the entire game's map through connecting red rooms, trying to find out where the next biome is until you get out far enough for a desired end point.

I need advice for Jacob and Esau. I'm trying to get their Mega Satan completion mark so I can unlock Mega Blast. I'm having a hell of a time with it. It seems almost inevitable that I end up in a room that would be no problem with a single character, but with two I get my health mulched. This is a problem for a run that relies on not taking red heart damage.

You probably know this already, but just in case: It's a lot easier to open the Mega Satan door without getting the key from angel rooms now because the DLC added three more things that can open it: Sharp Key, Cracked Orb, and the Soul of Cain consumable.

Additionally (IIRC, this is how I got J&E Mega Satan done), The Ladder gives you an angel statue on every new floor.

Just some more things to look out for while you try to do it the hard way.

I think vanilla Lilith might be among my least favorite characters, but when she gets going she gets going.

This is the piss laser build. Literal screen-filling golden showers. I think it could've ended up even more ridiculous re: numbers had I not picked Libra on floor 1, but it still ended mulching Mega Satan and Delirium without much trouble. Also, my dumb rear end forgot Birthright does nothing for her, oh well!

When playing as Jacob and Esau should I try to balance their damage and tears or stack everything on one of them? Trying to keep their ranges similar seems like a no brainer as does balancing their hit points. But damage?

i think it makes more sense to stack damage on one character since it’s easier to aim with one character but i truly don’t know i’m really bad at j&e

Irony Be My Shield

I think it makes some sense to stack damage and tears (until it caps) on the same character because they effectively multiply each other? Although you'll usually end up doing less damage than anyone else due to both characters being awful.

I always put all offensive upgrades onto Esau, with Jacob basically being like a weird familliar that I have to keep alive. It’s just better to have one good damage source and one that might as well not exist than to have two mediocre ones.

Yeah, generally I try to stuff all my DPS upgrades into one, (Unless the upgrade is really better suited to being on the other character) while spreading out durability upgrades and armored hearts across both. Don't want the escortee getting instagibbed now, but aside from that, 1 good character is better than 2 mediocre ones.

Yeah the thing to keep in mind is when you run into damage multipliers you’ll want to have more damage to multiply. So generally you should put all your damage ups on one character and tear ups on them until you cap.

Ariong

Yeah, that’s why I recommend Esau as the character to pump up. He starts with higher damage and lower tears than Jacob, which means he benefits more from damage multipliers and can take more fire rate increases before hitting the cap.

If you are planning to take on the alt path as Tainted Keeper, remember that the door to Mausoleum/Gehenna still needs two hearts to open. The run that made me aware of this fact was also one were Greed appeared in the store so there was no donation machine to borrow pennies from. Thanks Edmund.
