FFXIV has a large goon population and is probably only second to WoW for overall popularity. I play a lot of FFXIV and it is very PvE - story focused with a nice dungeon queue system; the way it handles different classes is nice too (you just have one character and you can change between classes freely once you hit level 15), however it is a monthly subscription game. Elder Scrolls Online's thread is pretty active and I've heard good things about the game. It's my understanding it is a buy the retail package and no monthly fees unless you want extra perks model. I played GW2 for a while but I felt like there was no good PvE endgame, maybe things have changed? There's a pretty good goon population there.

Can confirm re FFXIV--LOTRO was my first love but FFXIV is where I spend most of my MMO time these days (now that I finally hit Kindred with the new factions I've just been logging in on Wednesday to do the Rust and Rime quest). In particular the Main Story Quest (FFXIV's equivalent of the Epic Quests) is very well done, especially in the recent expansions. Each class (including crafters and gatherers--FFXIV has an incredibly deep crafting system) also has generally pretty good quest chains as you level. Unlike LOTRO, FFXIV has an auto-queuing system for group content which works well and is actually used by the player base, and they've cleverly set up the incentive structure at endgame so it actually rewards people for grouping with new players doing content for the first time, which tends to make people pretty friendly and patient with new people. I should also point out that there's a free trial with no time limit which allows you to level as many classes up to 35 on one character as you want, so you can try it at your own pace without committing to anything. IMO the first really outstanding piece of group content is at level 34 so this should give you a good taste of what's to come. (I also played about 20 hours of ESO but didn't get into it that much--the open world thing where you just wander around picking up content as you stumble upon it didn't really work for me. Can't speak to the endgame scene there.)

I might wake ESO back up. I bought it on its original release and it was supermechadogshit, but it looks way better now. Not really interested in FF-anything - the JRPG vibe is a massive turnoff. Played the original GuildWars too and it was very PvP-centric lategame as well. I just don't like PvP with that much effort put into it, didn't dig it in WoW, just not my thing outside of shooters or racing.

You can completely ignore pvp in Guild Wars 2, the PVE is more fleshed out than in the original. Has dungeons and raids and zone wide events at endgame. Similar to ESO in that regard.

Mordor is 30% off and this finally includes the base edition, lotro.com and click market it's $27.99 It's also a welcome back weekend so all kills/quests/etc give 25% bonus EXP, have fun bagrada posted:Does that come with the level boost? Yep, every version does unless you buy it in the in game store for points, then it does not. I've still got my boost six months later, so let me know if you boost and which class and maybe I'll finally use mine, welcome back weekend would be a good time for it. extra stout fucked around with this message at 20:54 on Jul 19, 2018 |

If someone were insane enough to come back to this game and want to solo through all the old content, would a Loremaster work or would they need to play a Warden or something OP like that? I saw a video of a 100 warden fighting the watcher in the water alone and he still got hit pretty hard. I did the vanilla content on my dwarf guardian up until it required a group in Angmar as my friends all rerolled alts or went back to EQ2/WoW. I then came back years later, did the newly soloable Angmar stuff and did the extra vanilla areas (forochel, evendim) that were added in before expansion packs, and then did Moria right up to the gates. Left off there at level 57, having ground out most of the deeds for the zones up to that point and my class. So of course now I'm thinking about coming back and starting over with the class I always wanted to play but couldn't because my fellowship needed a tank. extra stout posted:Mordor is 30% off and this finally includes the base edition, lotro.com and click market it's $27.99 Does that come with the level boost?

There's a huge boost in survivability from 100 to 115. I soloed the Rift and the Erebor and Osgilliath instance clusters on my Hunter as well as the first few Pelennor instances, and any tankier class will have an easier time. There are a few mechanics (e.g. in Ost Dunhoth) which make some content impossible to solo, unfortunately.

Thanks, I will check it out. I always wanted to at least see what they did with Moria so maybe I can take a boosted char around sightseeing a bit for my nostalgia kick. I searched on twitch the other night to try to find someone playing through Mordor or something so I could see how things have changed and could only find someone running pies around the Shire. Good times.

They're trying to retain people thinking of going back to WoW, I guess. Characters get exponentially more powerful at 106, and equipment as well. Importantly, you can breeze through level 105 skirmishes (maybe other content too?) for decent rewards for several levels after you get to 106.

I missed this game. Spent half an hour clearing out my inventory and bank on my 56 dwarf guardian then it's off to finally see Moria. As soon as I stop off in Misty Mountains for a delivery quest I apparently missed (thought I was done there in 2015). *Hours of running around goblin town, killing werewolves and finding secret bandit goblin bases in the hilltops later* Maybe I'll get to Moria next time. I should probably go somewhere the welcome back xp boost would help. Trying to decide on my alt. Got a high elf warden started who plays a bit too close to guardian, but with the ragged armor looks just like my badass dark souls 3 herald. After today's gameplay refresher in the mountains I definitely want run speed and ports for my sanity. bagrada fucked around with this message at 08:17 on Jul 22, 2018 |

Hunter is the easiest for fast traveling everywhere, though it will ruin you for other classes in that regard. But I always recommend Beorning for alts because reasons.

Hunter can travel everywhere and is ridiculously powerful especially at earlier levels. Redline minstrel also burns things down fast and has good survivability. If it matters to you, because they burn mobs so quickly they're great choices for getting the early zone deeds which can earn a good amount of LP.

Thanks for the heads up about the Mordor sale. I finally bought it. It said I hadn't logged in over a year . Man, this reminds me of why I hate returning to MMOs, heh. Especially any that isn't WoW (the community support just isn't there). I threw some trait points in, not really knowing what I'm doing. I kept blue line hunter because I like being able to move, and it's how my LIs are set up, but I know that fairly recently the meta changed back to redline (yet again). Last time they swapped it, it pissed me off, because you can't easily / cheaply swap out legacies. I'll probably just plow along on blue doing overland poo poo anyways. Glad to see my time away hasn't seen any improvements - the game still has "jitters" pretty often, and when you first log in (or get back from a session play) your HP is almost nothing still. Anywhos, just got to the first Mordor camp. Can't wait to see how long it takes before I get my poo poo pushed in. Morder is still brutal until you get gear, right?

I haven't looked at Beorning much, I'm already tired of bear form after playing a druid alt in WoW. Finally got my dwarf guardian from beta into Moria proper. Painful running around without a ram mount which I see people using to get around. I'm assuming I need to finish the faction grind or do a bunch of deeds for one and by then I'll probably be about done with the place. I thought for a while about grabbing Mordor during this sale, using the aria boost, and exploring backwards to see the sights, but that kinda defeats the purpose. I'll get there eventually if they don't shut the game down. I might see how far south I can ride my guardian for the hell of it though, I miss exploring above my weight class like the good old days in EQ1.

Mordor tends to suck pretty quickly. Level 106 gear is much better than 105, and you need stuff with light to counteract the zone-wide shadow debuff. The only way to get it is to quest at first, I think. If you can, find a buddy and it will be much more bearable.

Any goat can be ridden in Moria including the classic Thorin's Hall goat, you barter for it after hitting max rep with them. If you already did all related quests back there you can do deeds and loot rep items in Sarnúr, you can also just buy those off the auction or barter for them at any skirmish camp. https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Thorin%27s_Hall_(Reputation) I think I've given all of mine out but it's very quick and easy to farm, let me know if you want some help. Oh - can one walk into Mount Doom now? Will be a bit before I could test it out myself. Just wondering if all of that was there open world, or if it's all invisible walled off and poo poo, and you only get to explore it in the instances. Hoping you could walk all the way in, LOTRO is usually pretty good about that stuff.

I want to know if a level cap loremaster, captain, hunter, champion and warden can escort 4 level 1 hobbits from the shire to mount doom on foot. edit - as opposed to running into "you must be level 40 to enter Moria" type lockouts, or having to grind rep with rohan to get through, or having the hobbits all drop dead from fear somewhere like what the line of statues in Angmar used to do before you progressed enough to be able to pass by them. bagrada fucked around with this message at 19:56 on Jul 23, 2018 |
