Song's perfectly serviceable, I'm sure the album will be solid but their best days are pretty far behind them now.

I've never really gotten into this band all that much - they just sound like proficient but unremarkable melodeath to me - but I have to say this song has pretty nice hooks.
The chorus is pretty cool but I can't get into the rest of this track. It's a little too... hard rock for my tastes? I get the general sentiment about the band; even their early stuff wasn't as strong as Eternal Tears of Sorrow, the band they were born from, who had a really original sound that pulled together Finnish melodeath with gothic rock:

If "melodeath tinged with gothic rock" sounds like it's describing Edge of Sanity, that's not a coincidence

This sucks, it's slow and boring. At least half the tracks on their last album weren't trying to be radio friendly.

You pretty much don't see shred outside of the few odd tech death bands or weird progressive bands doing complicated solos. I'm kinda glad of it because even as a guitar player who likes good solos, they're super loving boring when they go past 8 measures or whatever, let alone being the entire focus of the song.

A buddy of mine is rubbing off on me and I'm starting to dislike solos more and more. I can appreciate a good solo that incorporates the feel of the song or works with the established melodies, but when it's just a wanky 30 second "look at me" I am less and less okay with that as time goes on.

I think some of that is a natural result of listening to metal long enough that you've pretty much heard all the solos. When I was a kid I was all about the weedly weedly but now I find most prog/shred/tech death completely unlistenable and boring.

Marduk has a couple good albums and thankfully the two Nazi pricks that bought the merch weren't on them. I would say the band should just kick out the two new-ish members that seem to be what this is focused on, but they've already released a statement saying this whole thing is false so lol. I hope a few youtubers that made videos defending Marduk after the Oakland show got shut down feel real dumb right now.

Yeah wanky show off solos that have nothing to do with the rest of the song are lame, hth. There's plenty of styles of metal that don't rely on solos, and some solos are in fact good.

I’m late for school story time but freshman year of college speech class we had to do a “speaker from hell” speech where we broke all the public speaking rules we had learned. It didn’t have to be an original speech so I read “Good Friends & a Bottle of Pills” by Pantera. The prof’s eyes got real big when I started my speech with “I hosed your girlfriend last night, while you snored and drooled I hosed your love”. :captainpop:

This thread title is good.

And gently caress it, let's showcase good solos and why:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNmHtWERWyw&t=145s

Just fast as hell with that blast beat and the right length for a shreddy solo. Got some sick alternate picking and some of the good kinds of arpeggio sweeps. Ending fits perfectly into the next section of the song where it just keeps up with the pace.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tAbcWrrIQU&t=194s

Same kind of idea only not with a blast beat but then it goes into a slow part with weird major key kind of stuff. Fits the whole "lost in space" vibe that vektor goes for.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEDoGsRKGsI&t=69s

Dead congregation has some cool doomy phrygian dominant stuff that I love, and the dueling guitar solos is always a dorky and cool thing. It goes on for a while but doesn't wear out its welcome.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UGTW6eX8ug&t=78s

Speaking of dueling guitar solos there's always this classic where you can clearly tell that Hanneman actually knew what he was doing and King just made random poo poo up

Listen to Angel Vivaldi. He’s a great songwriter and one of my favorite “shredders” right now. I wish there were more in the classic 80s style though. I can’t think of anyone I like currently doing that. It’s a shame.

as if all this was something more
than another footnote on a postcard from nowhere,
another chapter in the handbook for exercises in futility
For shreddy techy but melodic solos in death metal's recent past, first one to come to mind is the one from Lost Souls "Atlantis." On LS's first album, Jacek Grecki's soloing was pretty nuts, then for whatever reason got more understated for pretty much the rest of the band's output. However on the last track of their latest one, he whipped out this thing, which, while not as out there as some of what was on Scream of the Mourning Star, made me wish he'd do this poo poo more often.

(the second guitarist's solo is first, obviously)

I don't feel that the nazi discussion has ever been particularly nuanced or interesting in this thread, but it seems pretty bizarre to put a topic about the music scene being discussed somewhere else. That'll just make the thread even more of a list of youtubes.
