The first time i ever saw a Lynel I snuck up on it and rode it for a while. I had no idea if it was a bad guy or not until it bucked me.

The big monsters are so much more fun to fight than the packs of little guys. Just to go back to the shield parrying discussion, it is extremely satisfying to parry Lynels and follow up with the arrow to the chin move. I've never been very amazing at video game combat so botw combat is on a good level for me, I've had enough practice that I can do the sidesteps and parries pretty regularly now but am a klutz enough that it never feels rote. It has been really fun just running up and fighting some stuff in the early game like the Zora Lynel that I avoided the first time around.

I'm at a point in my current playthrough where the silver guys are starting to show up but I haven't fully upgraded everything -- and tbh just run around in the stealth outfit 99% of the time anyway and that's not a real defense-heavy set of duds -- so getting hit is dangerous and fights still have a level of tension and excitement, especially if something unexpected happens like when I was trying to knock the legs off a guardian and 3 stalmoblins jump out of the ground and start smacking me while I'm trying to peg it in the eye to stop the targeting.

I played Master Mode for a hot minute and the regen thing was really obnoxious so I haven't been back to it. That's my biggest disappointment with the DLC, wailing on regenerating damage sponges is not fun to me and making the game frustrating instead of casual fun ruins it. The other bummer was how worthless most of the DLC armor was, I was trying to collect it all early on so I could maybe get some use out of it but even then the base game items are so much better I've barely touched them. It would have been nice if they could have at least been upgraded.

the phantom armor set is nice because collecting and upgrading the barbarian set takes a long time. zants helmet, korok mask and majoras mask are all pretty handy.

The hyrule guard set is a fantastic early game armor. It makes all stamina ‘moves’ cost way less stamina. So you’re a great swimmer, climber and you can also do the spin move for cheap. It’s my go-to exploring armor.

The phantom Ganon set is my go-to mooching-around-Hyrule set for the stealth boost and not being bugged by stals at night.

Also for the cool cloak, of course.

When I played it the first time last year I burned out on BotW pretty badly. Even though I didn't do most of the shrines or killed most of the rare monsters it felt too much and there was no joy in exploring near the finish line.

Started it again and it's such a wonderful game and exploration is great even though I roughly remember where things are. It's so much more fun at the start when you're fragile and weapons are largely crap.

Question for the thread: does messing with essences and the horned statue let you mess with the level scaling? As in, if you left five or so hearts worth of essences with the statue unallocated, would it let you bump what might be a Silver Lynel back down to a blue or classic one? Kinda hunting down a few weapon and monster encyclopedia entries I accidentally blew past, and I'm trying not to use the Hateno lab's pay-for-completion thing.

The level scaling is based on how many monsters you kill, so unfortunately you can't rewind that.

If you see something suspicious, bomb it!

I just spent a week on Oahu and my nerdbrain kept thinking "just like Hyrule!" all the time. I know BotW pulls from a few different places, but the variety of terrain and plantlife on the island really felt like the game. At least a good third of the map, anyway.

So much of the fun of this game, for me, is how much the world reflects reality. You get to explore the landscape in a way you can't in real life. Such a marvel how far video games have come, and it feels like a natural extension of Miyamoto's original inspiration for the series.

Considering how many things in this game just happen to set stuff on fire, I think that's rather a good thing. There would be nothing left of hyrule field after your first visit if it spread like a proper fire.

I killed my first Lynel yesterday in honorable 1v1 combat.
Now I need to go to the coliseum and avenge my first Lynel death from the beginning of the game.

I beat this for the first time tonight! Do we still need to use spoiler tags in this thread? The first ganon battle was awesome visually and extremely satisfying in spite of being pretty easy. The spectacle made up for that and honestly it felt real good just completely stomping his very ugly and gross face in. I had a way easier time with his laser parries than on guardians which I assume is probably intentional. The entire castle sequence is awesome, a real microcosm of all the good stuff about this game. Climbing around, sneaking, and shoving a million raw uncooked steaks in Link’s face.

On a related note, I couldn’t find the last memory at hyrule castle and feel like I need to go back in there. What’s the easiest way to reach it?

Can someone give me a non-spoilery hint about something?

I'm trying to find the Korok Mask, and the game's frustratingly vague about it. It tells me to look in the lost forest, which I get - but it's a huge area full of hidden warps, and the only info I have about its location - a 'hollowed out tree' is not particularly helpful. Is it in the mouth of one of the creepy trees? Is it in one of the big hollow tunnel-like trees? Even the Deku Tree has a hollowed out area. I don't know whether to look in the area BEFORE I reach the Deku tree, in the deku tree's well-lit area, or in one of the trial areas. Could anyone just give me a small hint as to where in this big annoying forest I should even look?

also here's a stupid take

It's in the mouth of one of the open-mouthed trees between the Lost Woods entrance and the entrance of the Korok village, ie the area where you can get lost and void out back to the entrance

Thanks. I don't mind getting lost and voiding out over and over if at least I know I'm looking in the right section of the forest.

They must be really bored, considering how most Hylians will get wrecked by bokoblins. Maybe that's why they don't attack on sight: they can't be bothered anymore.

Hell do we know that the Hinox are evil? They pretty much just sit there minding their own business until they're attacked, at which point they're mostly concerned about collecting the pretty sword from the dude who stabbed them.

Even the bokoblins/moblins/lizalfos don't seem to do a lot of harm to people, if we're being analytical about it - they'll beat up idiots they find wandering round the woods looking for truffles and flowers and whatnot, but you never turn up to find they've actually killed someone.

That's going to be the big plot twist in BoTW 2. It turns out Link was actually the evil one all along. No one believed poor Gannondorf until it was too late.

If it’s a windy day, the breeze will sweep a grass fire along until there’s nothing left to burn. There’s even a little spot on the Plateau to show how you can use this to burn a monster camp (which I only recently found)
