do you actually own a lefty-guitar? i thought it'd actually be almost advantageous to play with your dominant hand on the fret board - a lot of the time i'm finding that i'm not applying to strength to strings and i'm strumming too hard over the sound hole. a little bit like how when you play drums you're supposed to ride with your less dominant hand so you have more strength for the one you move around more
Only my first couple were righty, as a kid. The first was an awesome (read: awful) Hondo strat copy that we flipped, and the other was a flipped Epiphone SG. Since then, they've all been lefty.
I knew I was left-handed in pretty much everything else in life, but most tellingly: I did air guitar as a lefty.

maybe this is a super stupid question but is there any meaningful sound difference between gibson double cuts and les pauls? or maybe being more straight forward, is there something that sounds like a double cut on the epiphone line.

the two sounds i'm interested in impersonating are like, the early shins, super bright sound - it wasn't played on a double cut initially, but james mercer has played one for a loooong time now and it sounds pretty faithful to the albums. but i also like the super dirty, crunchy weezer tone (rivers played gibsons in the studio, usually an LP jr), and the trademark fragile pixies/doolittle tone, done on a vanilla LP.

i've been looking at fenders because they're kinda the most famous (and not as in total corporate shambles as gibson to my eyes) but the more i think about it, the tones i'm inspired by are coming out of gibson/styled guitars. is there any epiphone that can cover all of these squares? or at least like, establish a little settlement in all of those squares

Really, at this point it's a comfort thing first and foremost - go with whatever feels best. There are so many ways to change the sound from EQ to strings to pickups to pedals (and pedals, and pedals, and... :unsmigghh:) that you can take something in any direction you want. But if a Gibson-style or Fender-style is more comfortable to you, start from there. You're not going to be able to achieve the sounds you want if the guitar doesn't feel right in your hands, no matter what gear you're using.

And it's a big enough market that you can go with a guitar of any style you want without supporting corporate stupidity, not to mention all the used stuff out there.

Extremely grim and evil.
It sounds like you really like the sound of P-90s (lots of people will agree with you on that.) Luckily P-90s are pretty hot right now so you have lots of options for P-90-equipped guitars from many companies at basically every price point.

Any advice on picking a pedalboard?

Currently have:
Ibanez WH10 wah (original!)
Metal Zone (gently caress the haters)
Big Muff Tone Wicker (medium sized case)
MXR Super Comp

Amp I will be using (H&K Grandmeister) has noise gate, flanger, chorus, delay, phase and tremolo built in.

I figure I'll want another OD/dist pedal since both the Metal Zone and Big Muff are a little too specialized.

Considering going for a medium size one from Thomann to have a little extra space for future additions, anything specific I ought to think about when deciding on one?

Not supporting guitar companies you don’t like is easy - just buy used. It is really hard to find the sound of some guitars with other brands. A Telecaster is pretty easy to build yourself or buy from and off brand but something like an L5 (for me) is extremely hard to find a copy of that sounds like the real thing. I can’t stand Gibson nowadays so when I bought my L5 it was used, with the added bonus of being 48 years old and all of the advantages of an older guitar. Even if I didn’t hate Gibson the company I don’t trust what they are building now to not potentially have problems in a few years.

I don't think there is a general recommendation station so I'll ask here. Any recommendations on Bluetooth adapters that have decent latency? Maybe a paired dongle/headset kit? I've bought 2 to use with my Mustang head and both have been poo poo.

The other thing that's awesome about modern selection is that you can find just about anything you want in different sizes/shapes, so you don't need to deal with routing your guitar out to see how a different type of pickup sounds in it.

(Humbuckers the size of Strat pickups will sound a bit different than full size for a few physics reasons, tbf.)

I've only bought two new guitars in my life, and they were both "as-is" warehouse damaged models from the shop I worked at. But there's a fantastic used-only store nearby (where I've also worked), so I know not everyone has that availability.

As far as I understand, nothing Bluetooth has decent latency.

Does that work with some guitar-into-ipad setup or whatever though? Most anything computery has some latency and playing an instrument is where you'll really notice it the most. I'd be surprised if even low-latency wireless stuff (besides a proper radio setup) didn't have that annoying, infinitesimal delay at best

I’ve used them with GarageBand on iOS devices but haven’t tried with anything else. I have a iPhone -> Guitar adapter somewhere but it’s too big of a piece of garbage to test tbh and the latency would be too much of the adapter end.

Yeah it's that physical contact -> sound delay that you feel, you probably wouldn't really notice when you tap a screen. Well I mean if the headphone latency is decent, so it must be ok!

It's not actually Bluetooth and the latency is still bad--at least 150ms or so (I measured it).

drat, that’s surprising. I can be pretty sensitive to latency with guitar and whatnot but I found it very usable for music making.

Good news, Australian Epiphone fans, they're back with different fingerboard materials, and the G400 Pro has a bound neck! But there's still no P90 SG Junior :smith:

I actually spoke to some stores this week about Epiphone/Gibson. Turns out with Gallins/Allan's going down there's no actual distributer for Gibson in Australia right now. Was told to sit tight for six to eight weeks for something to appear. As it is you can't buy new Gibson or Epiphones unless it's old stock.

That would explain why these guys are selling them on pre-order then. Interestingly they and bettermusic.com.au have found the same model of limited edition 1966 alpine white/cherry g-400 pros, so maybe they're bringing those back with pau ferro like the others.

Yes, it was - but I was having to put my asking price at close to 50% of cost, so I've withdrawn for now. The thread was overflowing with praise, but nobody wanted to part their hard-earned cash for it - I'll upgrade the pickups spend some more time with it; no point exchanging it 1:1 with a grubby MIM Fender...

About 18mo ago? I got the '58 RI about a month ago and literally haven't taken the Edwards out of its case since, and that's a decent wedge of change to just be sitting in the cupboard.

Yeah, same all over the market right now. I've got a Rick 620 sat in my lockup that hasn't seen daylight this last six months, but even though I got it cheap the market for them is just flat. Luckily I can just about afford to wait it out till I see a decent trade.

Tonal Energy is the best tuner and I have tried many. It is crazy accurate and although it doesn’t help with guitar as much it will keep track of how in tune you are over time so for bass lessons I can keep it on and have students see a percentage of how their intonation is in percentages. It also has a very visible UI - I have had it since it was released and I can’t say enough good things about it.

Now that i'm earning money again the dormant GAS has sprouted from it's spores and has started to take over. There's a green Charvel So-Cal at Sam Ash for $650 and that thing would make for a nice old school death metal guitar when retuned. Hopefully no one buys it so I can pick it up some time in August
