I don't strictly agree with this, if only because -isms are people's opinion and culture. You can write a bill to disallow discrimination, but it takes time to change how people think. Economics is a more cut and dry matter of policy. I think it's a matter of, that we need to always be emphasizing the issues of social inequality as well as economic inequality, and doing what we can with policy, or art for that matter. But -isms will probably take longer, because you have to change people, not merely policy.

I don't disagree that you must fix -isms to fix class inequality and vice versa, however.

My problem is mostly that Bernie is not a great representative of leftism. He's an old straight white dude who dismisses social strife as secondary to class inequality. But he's a safe Senate seat who is in a position to literally be the symbolic representative of "Hillary please be more left tia." To be that I feel he should be a better ambassador for social issues and he isn't, and that's my problem with him.

Race is as much a class as wealth is.

Perhaps, but it runs deeper than wealth. You could make every black person in America wealthy and they would still be hated in a unique and insidious manner by white people that is independent of their socioeconomic status. You can change that with education and policy over time, but it's not as simple as flipping a switch and nobody is racist anymore.

Terrence M. Cunningham, the chief of police in Wellesley, Mass and The President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, America’s largest police organization. Issued a formal apology to the nation’s minority population “for the actions of the past and the role that our profession has played in society’s historical mistreatment of communities of color.”

quote:

“Events over the past several years,” Cunningham said, “have caused many to question the actions of our officers and has tragically undermined the trust that the public must and should have in their police departments…The history of the law enforcement profession is replete with examples of bravery, self-sacrifice, and service to the community. At its core, policing is a noble profession.”

But Cunningham added, “At the same time, it is also clear that the history of policing has also had darker periods.” He cited laws enacted by state and federal governments which “have required police officers to perform many unpalatable tasks…While this is no longer the case, this dark side of our shared history has created a multigenerational — almost inherited — mistrust between many communities of color and their law enforcement agencies.”

Cunningham continued, “While we obviously cannot change the past, it is clear that we must change the future…For our part, the first step is for law enforcement and the IACP to acknowledge and apologize for the actions of the past and the role that our profession has played in society’s historical mistreatment of communities of color.”

He concluded, “It is my hope that, by working together, we can break this historic cycle of mistrust and build a better and safer future for us all.”

Oddly from my perspective the democrats are far more concerned with social issues than economic ones, because both parties are parties of money.

Coming from a country which has had an actual labour movement within living memory, America under the democrats spends far more effort on social issues than it does on economic ones.
