Nostalgia4Dogges posted:So is that the actual last wolverine movie at least with Hugh yeah i'd say so it's set a little way in the future so it could be claimed as a what-if i guess but it was a far better movie than that shitpile apocalypse honestly i reckon you could make some major changes and have a better film cut the whole final section out. he dies after they reach the hut with the kids, maybe the medicine doesn't work, whatever. the showdown happens at the black dude's farm, no need for it to happen again, then wolverine is staggering on, the doctor still tells him he's all hosed up and he just keeps pushing until they get there. collapses, dies, the end. idk i just thought the last DESPERATE ESCAPE AND FIGHT THE EVIL MONSTER was unnecessary. that's not to say i didn't like the film, because it owned bones and old wolverine is awesome

Two Finger posted:yeah i'd say so I was expecting the evil wolverine to pin down Logan with some sort of ticking-time-bomb scenario and somehow for Logan to decide to shoot himself with the adamantium bullet in a way that would go through both of them and kill them both, satisfying both of the plainly foreshadowed uses for the bullet. That said, one big plot hole is that there's no explanation for why they can't just manufacture more evil Logans. Then again, the answer to that issue is that the movie's stakes don't include the bigger world, the only place where more evil wolverines would be relevant, which makes things both more satisfying and more depressing. I also liked how it was never addressed whether Eden was an actual place or just a made up hopeful location to keep the kids moving. gently caress, what a movie.

Honestly I thought that Logan was going to start seeing it Charles' way - that all that matters is Laura believes in it. It was almost a bit Children of Men-ish in some ways, in that he ultimately sacrifices himself for a child's uncertain future. Which is loving high praise for a comic book film. I wonder if that was intentional? With the whole 'there have been no new mutants for 25 years' thing. I liked the evil wolverine thing I just really think it played out its usefulness at the confrontation at the black guy's farm. Could have left him bleeding out stuck to the heavy machinery and lost nothing. I was a little disappointed when they were injecting him and he was coming back because it just guaranteed you were gonna see a showdown. I dunno. I just really thought the film worked better as a study of Logan coming to terms with his own death. Or maybe you could have him being revived and them being unable to find them so you get the theme of 'poo poo's still hosed, just that the kids managed to get away'. As for the bullet, I thought it was the point that it gets thrown away because he no longer needs it - him spending his life for her takes away the need for it. But I want to be clear - I loved the film, despite my nerd bitching.

My Korean roommate went to see Logan yesterday, and came back somewhat disappointed, though he tried to mask it. He said he was disappointed that it wasn't more science-fictiony. I was like "The gently caress did you expect from the trailer we were gushing over?" I'm gonna do some more work on my dumb strategic marketing plan and then watch a Game of Thrones episode in German for the inevitable entertainment factor.

Presumably, the evil scientist was the only one who could effectively make and/or control evil Logans. irl there would of course be documentation and prototypes and blah blah blah, but it's a comic book movie. And yes, a very good one at that. I don't know whether it was an intentional aspect of Charles' senility or not, but he sounded a whole lot like Magneto in his "Well yeah I almost killed a few hundred innocent normal people in the hotel, but the important thing is that we found a new mutant." I hope it was intentional, because I really liked it. Charles Xavier dropping the f-bomb constantly seemed really out of character, though. Even if Eden wasn't a real place, there was definitely something waiting for the kids. The leader of the mutant children was on the radio with someone in Canada who gave him directions and approval for transit. Plot hole: how the heck did they get back across the US/Mexican border after the big fight with all those Federales? The limo was shot to poo poo, seems like something Border Patrol would care about. And given how surprised Logan was by Charles' use of mind control on the horses, he probably hadn't demonstrated that ability in years.

Arc Light posted:And given how surprised Logan was by Charles' use of mind control on the horses, he probably hadn't demonstrated that ability in years. Yeah I had a little realization that the movie was succumbing in that moment to formulaic storytelling. Like, someone in production or financing (or however movies are movie, idk) decided that what they really needed was a buildup to the final act that incorporated a tie-in to the bigger world and a moment of levity, however telegraphed. It was not successful; as soon as I saw the shots lingering for an extra beat on those farmer/family members with the horses on the road, I started wondering how the movie planned to kill them. It only stands out because the rest of the movie is so loving great and seamless.
