If you gave Canadians a list of rights and freedoms they'd be willing to sacrifice for some sort of gain or purpose, "home ownership" would be the very last thing on the list, possibly even before driving. Home ownership is a social and economic good and the most basic thing you're supposed to achieve in your life to be counted as a real true middle class. If people are ruining their lives trying to become home owners it just means the government needs to do something about it. Oh but the government also shouldn't do anything that might lower or stagnate home prices, so just give people handouts, tax breaks, and easier access to crippling debt. It's not crippling debt if prices always go up, it's win win for society. People get houses, their house is a guaranteed good investment, and the cycle of middle class reproduction continues.

This. A thousand times this. What happens when interest rates go up?

I own my house, but I could afford the mortgage at double my current interest rate. I don't understand why people don't consider that bills could spike, interest rates could spike, you might need to replace the roof, the furnace could fail, the hot water heater could fail, the foundation might crack, a pipe could burst, I could go on. There are a lot of 'unexpected costs' to home ownership and if you're not accounting for upkeep in the monthly budget you probably shouldn't buy a house.

Chalking this one up to brain damage.

quote:

Several years ago I awoke from acoma and spent years learning to walk with a brain injury. I went even further then ever expected because I am driven and strive to be a good example for my 4 children to follow. After several years of recovery and rehab I learned to walk and face every challenge with my now drop foot and atrohpied right leg incased in a orthopeadic brace up to my knees. I took life on with a great attitude and never looked back. Just 9 years ago I returned to college at the age of 44 and became a Personal Support Worker (NursesAide). I was working fulltime as soon as I finished college and told my family I was going to buy a home in 2 years by working tons of hours and eating cheap so I could save every dime. I bought my first home 2 years latter, then 4 years latter bought my second home as a single disabled mom. I was so proud of my home and love being excepted by my employer of now almost 9 years I am dedicated as respected the same as anyone else. Just over 2 years ago I bought my current home and it has been everything I have ever dreamed of owning and then some. I lived within my means and did without brand new cars and fancy clothes to be a homeowner. My youngest child my son told me I was his greatest inspiration because I never give up and I never let my disability stand in the way of my dreams or being a good person.

In 2015 I was on cloud nine in my new home its was perfect. I would garden for long hours after my long day at work I was so at peace and happy with life despite the challenges I faced along the way. My first winter was a cold one and I have baseboard heat along with a fireplace in my livingroom and a propane fireplace in my family room. I only used the baseboards in my bathroom and bedroom when being used. Otherwise my main source of heat is both of my fireplaces. My winter hydro bills in 2014 and 2015 never went over 4 to 500. I budgeted and managed and when summer came I was never behind as i lived within my means. I had extra from my paychecks after mortgage, Hydro, gas and groceries. I would save for trips to visits my kids who had moved away. I had money for my hobby gardening and enjoyed an occasional meal out life was good!!..I loved buying a plant here and there, rididng my ride on and enjoying a cold wine cooler in my simple country home which I had achieved all on my own my dreams had come true from hard work and determination. I had great credit and all my bills were paid on time. I was proud to be a Canadian single parent.

In January 2016 my life took on a new hardship by no errors of my own. In December it was very mild and I had expected a very low winter bill about 300. I was shocked when I got my bill 909.. I called Hydro One thinking this must be an error no way my bill could be almost 400 higher then the January a year before. We did not even get snow until early January and very mild temperatures. I was asked by HYDRO one if I had baseboard heat I was honest and replied yes. They claimed I must of left a baseboard heater on high and forgot about it this was BS. As I have a meter and I was certain something was wrong with it as I heat with wood and propane mostly. They did nothing but blaime my baseboard heat insisting the bill was correct. The next month I got a bill for 850 and the following month 820. No mater how hard I bundled up and did without the bills piled up. I paid every dollar I had after mortgage and gas money for my car. I use to spend about 140 biweeky for groceries and cut that to 65 by doing without proper nutrition no meat and no dairy. With a couple months I had to get a payment plan for my winter Hydro and then pay an extra 200 a month to repay the almost 2000 I was now falling behind. It was pathetic that I take home about 2400 a month and of that 650 to 700 was going to Hydro One.. My credit wen down as I fell behind on other bills to avoid a disconnect. In June I had paid out 2 payments totaling 680 dollars but that was not enough. Altho I had paid the amount billed I was a week late on my payment as I needed food and new work shoes the check prior. I got a text from a friend on July 8th that a note was on my door from Hydro One and my Hydro was off.

I was in the dark after just paying every cent extra I had a week early leaving only 65$ for food to last me the next 2 weeks. I was sitting in my car to go into Giant Tiger to go stretch that 65 in food to go as far as it could to feed me when I was faced with making the call to Hydro One to clear up what I thought was a mistake. I explained how I had just sent a payment the week before and how I had been told my Hydro was off. I was told my payment plan was cancelled because I was late with my payment twice. I was then told I need to pay in full 1,399 left on my payment plan before my service could be restored. How was I to turn my $65 left for food into $1, 399 was beyond anything I have ever endured. I sat in my car in the 30 t temps and cried like a baby. I know had no money for food and no Hydro!! I live in the country so this meant no water, and no flushing toilet. What food I did have was spoiled by the following morning. I could not go to work i felt dirty, and desperate to find a way to get that 1,399 to get my HYDRO one. I would be left the next 5 days living in over 30 degree heat and having to bring buckets of water from other places just to flush a toilet. All because my hydro had become so high with delivery cost of almost 300 a month and I live only 8 k from town. My HST and other charges another 140 or so. I simple had no other means to come up with the extra 400 and hirer that had been tacked onto my bills in 2016. By July of 2016 I had earned about 2600 but had to pay almost 6000 in Hydro in 7 months. My hydro was as high as my mortgage and my dreams of being a home owner had been destroyed not by means of a fire, illness, or loss of my job, only my HYDRO bill drove me to poverty. I am now ashamed to be Canadian. I begged for one more chance to not be late on my payment plan and was denied. I explained that I have a disabilty and need medicines for blood thinners and epilepsy that i can't do without. Mostly I cried and said PLEASE give me one more chance i am not rich and I work hard Iam a single mom. I was told sorry you can manage and not everyone has air conditioning and that I would have to live elsewhere If I couldn't pay my bill. I had no air conditioner it was my delivery and added taxes that had put me behind. My stress was maxed and I had never been so depressed and humiliated in my life. I would eventually get help of 600 from the LEAP program but still needed 800 before they could help. I had to cash in my reserve property tax when I could not even qualify for a small 1,000 dollar loan. Those 5 days are days I will never forget how ashamed I was to live in this country that allows our HYDRO to drive us to poverty. I know work 6 days a week and sometimes double shifts up to 15 hours just to stay ahead and have enough money after my Hydro bill for gas in my car and something for food. I am exhausted most of the time and my happiness has been shattered. I can barely work in my yard anymore without the tears flowing down my face. I find myself stressing over the next HYDRO Bill and how will I survive in my home this winter. I will have to live out of 1 room if this keeps up or I will loose my home and fall further behind come spring!! Please help us in rural ONtario Iam 1 of the more then 60,000 who have had to live in the dark since Wynne took office.

There are days when I wish I was still in acoma as I feel like Wynne has destroyed all my hopes and dreams of being a home owner. I just hold on to the faith that someday soon someone will stand for the people of Ontario and not just for big profits for themselves.

Please Wynne step down and stop telling us " It's worth It"...

Thanks for nothing Kathy k. rural Buckhorn Ontario..

Do Ontario hydro bills not include the the amount of power that you actually use, in some sort of unit of power like kWh? It seems like that would be germane to the point being made. If the bill doubled, surely the point would be made much stronger by pointing out that the actual consumption of electricity was the same, instead of yammering on and on about which baseboard heaters were on or off and how cold the winter was, like some sort of innumerate imbecile.

Owning a house for any length of time guarantees all of these things will happen during the course of you owning it. A house is a machine. Roofs, hot water heaters, furnaces, siding etc are wear items. They are absolutely expected to need replacement.

Buying a house and not calculating that into the price is like buying a car and going "What! I have to replace the oil and tires?"

This is fun to watch, it's basically the perfect framing for the next election where the Canadian electorate gets to choose between two messages:

- You are going to be materially worse off than your parents, your quality of life will be lower, things are hard and they're going to stay that way, because our economy has not kept pace with the effects of globalization and technological change.

- Those drat <insert convenient scapegoat here> took your jobs, they're freeloading and abusing the system, and if we run them out/disadvantage them your life will be better!

Guess which one is going to sell better to all these economically anxious working class Canadians?

The Conservatives are already building a narrative around the latter, and the Liberals are clearly not interested in addressing the former.

She's not hydro poor, she's personal finance deficient. She's going to obviously strawman hydro as putting her into poverty, but her lack of budgeting is the root cause here. 2400 a month and shes going to buy a house, heat it with electric, and cars? Good luck with that. If someone really wants to dig you can pull up her mortgage from the land registry ($10) and work backwards to put a price on her failings.

This is truely sad :qq:, but when interest rates rise the same thing will happen. People will strawman Trudeau for not protecting their mortgage. Here's the thing, The Fed rate is going up.

I'm still not understanding how she pays around $800-900/month with $300 delivery? That's at least 2000 kWh/month @ 20 cents per for peak rates, and off-peak is less than 10 cents/kWh. Hell, it could be up to 5000 kWh/month if it's mostly off-peak usage.

She's taking home 2400/month, that's more like 40k before taxes. With a single income it doesn't go far but sadly it's about average for canada.

It's hard to back the meter read was wrong given the other circumstances to her story. I'll be backing the she is wasting power with incandescent 100w bulbs, running her baseboard heating throughout her home, or perhaps is billed for two families worth of appliances in a rural area.

Oh yeah absolutely, it's completely normal for a bill to double in a year. And Hydro One is completely on top of billing errors, its not like they overbilled 100,000 people last year to the point of cutting off some people's power when they couldn't pay their fake bills.
