Gatecrasher starts you with a faction soldier now which craters its difficulty a lot. Rend/Justice/Claymore are immense gamechangers.

Gatecrasher is piss easy, I've literally never lost a Gatecrasher on Commander. It's 2?-3 pods and a single captain. Just use all 4 grenades you start with to destroy cover and take the pods on individually.

The fuel mission is first mission so you don't get flashbangs. It's 4 pods, 2 captains, and a sectoid. 3 of the pods range EXTREMELY close to each other and will always chain together. The last pod ( with the sectoid ) has a 50% range of the objective, so it has a pretty high chance of chaining in when you try to get your hack.

Oh, and you have a time limit of 7? turns, and it takes 4 turns full dashing to even reach the objective, so you have to loving kill 3-4 pods in 3-4 turns.

And Jane Kelly is your only class unit. Everyone else is rookies who will die instantly if attacked because Commander HP.

It's the shittiest loving mission. I am now heading into the endgame and it was still the hardest mission in the entire game.

Maybe Gatecrasher is harder on Legend, I don't know. But be glad you can't do the tutorial on Legend because I have zero idea how the fuel source mission would be possible. It took me 7 tries using the restart feature just to eke through it, and I finally did because the sectoid pod never triggered, and one of the captain pods got stuck on the world geometry in a corner somewhere.

kater
Nov 16, 2010

The timer on the beacon is brutal and the map is so loving small and narrow I don't think it's much better than gatecrasher. The objective in the middle of a long trailer is a death sentence, I lost two and put Kelly in the hospital for a month. It absolutely is the hardest thing in a commander run.

Gatecrasher on Legendary is 3 pods; 3 troopers, 2 troopers and a Commander and 1 trooper and a Sectoid.

It was insanely rough before WotC because they usually camp together near the objective and triggering the Commander pod almost always triggers the Sectoid as well.

Also not sure of the non-Legendary health values but the HP is 4/7/10 which means your 4 grenades can't even consistently kill troopers and or Commanders with 2 or Sectoids with 3.

I've never had too much trouble with Gatecrasher, but that's because I usually put two guys on Overwatch before I pop the first squad. If you can kill that first pod without wasting grenades, you're in really good shape. If everyone misses...you're in for a bad time.

-Double psi / hacking defense (not as bad in the grand scheme of things but it nerfs psi troopers)

A single one of these can be worked around (although no black market, double intel cost, and double scan times can end your run single handedly). But keep in mind that all of these are permanent, and all of these stack month after month after month.

Have you actually played with Grim Horizon to confirm that is how the events work? Cause I've heard conflicting reports about whether or not stuff like the Black Market closing are permanent. Some people have said that dark events with a special time aren't permanent. Its all a bunch of hearsay so I'd like it confirmed by someone that has actually done it.

Setting up the perfect ambush can take quite some time though, and even when you stack everything in your favor it can still fail. Plus after dealing with the first pod you still have two nasty pods to contend with outside of stealth.

I was able to clear it pretty reliably on legend but I usually took at least one wound/death in the process. With the faction soldier though its much easier to clear it flawlessly.

I finished my first run of XCOM 2: WOTC. drat did I have a good time. I nearly lost the campaign multiple times thanks to the hunter, the only facilities that existed on the map were guarded by the Alien Rulers, and I made the mistake of letting the enemy live past turn one. On another note I couldn't stop laughing when my only Reaper and good scout developed a "fear of missed shots." Somehow I never had any of the Chosen take down my base. Then again I kind of killed them asap so I wouldn't have to deal with that stuff.

EDIT: If I ever choose Grim Horizon I'll do it on a Rookie playthrough. That way I don't pull my hair out when I inevitably do something stupid like having my only frost bomb grenadier on the other side of the map.

I have a theory on this. The fog of war is like concealment for enemies. Using scouts and battle scanners, I've noticed that enemies will patrol in the fog of war as your soldiers move. Its seems like you should see them but enemies are in the fog and players are in concealment. Sewers are bad because the fog of war is "thicker" due to it being all walls. Once concealment breaks, the fog disappears and you can activate easier. You have to treat concealment as a debuff on the enemies and not a buff on your soldiers. Because computers are finite, the vision tiles for enemies can be really finicky and that has to be accounted for.

Phoneposting so I can't easily go back and search for it but there was a guy earlier in the thread who was running it and definitely lost the black market forever. The description is pretty clear that it applies to all dark events, it wouldn't make sense for there to be exceptions.

Also I guess I must have blacked out or something while leveling my reaper because I totally missed the existence of the Banish retargeting skill and thought it was a bug when she was exploding entire pods. Good to know that Banish is just that ridiculously OP.

Quick question. I only got about halfway through X-com 2 when it first came out due to some computer issues. I'm starting it back up again, should I get the expansion now or after I finish?

Depends how comfortable you were playing XCOM2, I think. I'd generally say you don't want to use WotC for your first playthrough, since it adds a ton of extra stuff that can quickly overwhelm a new player, and also makes the game quite a bit harder. If you were already in the groove of XCOM 2 though, then you might as well do WotC as well.

One other thing, if you've gotten the other DLC (Shen's Last Gift and Alien Hunters) then the game won't let you play the story missions from those and the story missions from WotC in one campaign, so it might be worth doing one playthrough of XCOM2 + Other DLC before you do XCOM2 + WotC + Other DLC.

In Vanilla, there's a lot of silly AWC crossover skills that seem broken but turn out to be useless, and visa versa. I got run&gun on a sniper and thought it was useless, until I accidentally found out I can blue-move and still fire the rifle. I've just gotten rapid fire (pre-WotC, so no cooldown) on my Gunner Major, she is death incarnate. I'm not even gonna pick rupture when it arrives, no point in it.

Also, cute trick: Shadowstrike on rangers specifies firing from "concealed", but it actually works whenever you give the attack command and the target can't see you. Like, say, standing behind a wall while revealed and hitting a guy who couldn't see your start position. +25% acc and crit. It's too late in the campaign now, but that seems like something that could be exploited if you really wanted to. Tangentally, I've found that I prioritize mobility on shotties and aim on swordboys. Shotties with PCS and light armour can almost always take a blue-move flank shot, so I don't even need to get run&gun, while swordboys usually yellow-move (barring Reaper) so they have plenty movement to spare, but can potentially whiff on stuff like Archons and I've always been tempted to give the aim PCS'. Kinda backwards!

I managed to kill the Chosen Assassin with only Tier 2 things, it wasn't too bad.

The Berserker Queen was much harder, I just got lucky that it walked up behind a wall and didn't trigger so I could set a proper ambush for it. Even then it was rough. Weirdly I have two R.A.G.E suits in the proving ground to choose from, maybe from uninstalling Alien Rulers and reinstalling it.

I will say I feel like some of the missions on this are ridiculously long. They do give nice rewards (two Colonel level Grenadiers when I don't even have Colonels yet) but it starts to feel like a slog when you've killed 150 Lost. That said I love that I don't need to use Sharpshooters at all now, I've not used any of mine even once since the first mission.
The Reaper does everything they can do but better. And it lets me use Concealment properly, since I'm absolutely poo poo with it normally.

Sharpshooters are better than ever imo. Gunslingers are still the #1 robot annihilators with bluescreen rounds (works against the new super common Spectres!), and are insanely good against the lost. Completely trivialize 'em if you get Between The Eyes. Pistols also get waaay more benefit out of +1 damage breakthroughs than anything else. I personally don't really like sniper sharpshooters, but I cannot deny that the hunter's sniper rifle makes them loving absurd if you're willing to wait until you can get it. Easily the best chosen weapon.

Honestly I don't see many parallels at all between sharpshooters and reapers, despite the game doing everything in its power to make them seem extremely snipery between their single shot rifles, their overall look, the dialogue, and your initial reaper being named Dragunova. But mechanically they ain't snipers at all, in any way. They're a mobile scouting class that can occasionally contribute to a fight at ideally mid-close range. Pretty much the polar opposite. They're a better left-side-specced ranger, not a better sharpshooter.

I agree with pretty much al lof this. Now, I did use Reapers to replace Sharpshooters from time to time on missions when I felt I didn't need long-range support. But generally a Sharpshooter and a Reaper work perfectly together. Especially since Reapers can act as spotters for Sharpshooters to set off explosive ambushes once you get Homing Claymore. Throw down a Proximity Mine, then hit with a Homing Claymore. Set everyone to overwatch just out of sight. Snipe Homing Claymore'd victim. Pod gone.

I'm a bit disappointed in the expansion after a few days of it.
Because of the huge price point (£35!) I think I expected more. It's a shame about the cut faction and that would definitely have made me value the game more. But I also wish there were more enemies. Two or three new ones, especially when two are basically reskinned versions of existing things with new abilities is really disappointing.

I'm enjoying it but it doesn't feel like I'm getting what I'd expect from a game that was £35.
