I never knew about his weirder beliefs before this election, just that he was an honestly inspiring figure his community was justifiably proud of, and at this point I just feel bad (unless he's currently saying something hilarious, which I guess is often) http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/11/the-other-ben-carson-213333 posted:Prince Havely thought he knew Ben Carson: how he stands, how he talks, how he holds his hands and how those hands hold a scalpel.

That's pretty much the right reaction to that Carson as a figure is so insane because he legitimately has an amazing life story, but through a mixture of unbridled ego not unfamiliar to doctors and what I have to believe is an honest desire to use his life story as a message of uplift (while earning an honest profit, of course) for other black folks coming from similar life conditions, he's fabricated this hilarious personal mythology that he's now put in danger because he's gotten too gassed on himself. Gets pumped up after delighting a bunch of white conservatives by sticking it to Obama and officially cementing his status as Most Good One, decides to take it to another level. Fucks around and becomes the frontrunner, with all the scrutiny that status brings. Now, whatever happens, most of those who found in him an inspiration are left staring into the wreckage as his tales are picked apart and ridiculous words continue to shuffle out of his mouth. Went from being in idol to knowing that it's not even worth much effort reaching out to black voters because he's already ensured they'll never support him in significant numbers By the way, what was Carson talking about during that prayer breakfast that made him so big? First and foremost, that inane HSA plan, which he has apparently still not figured out. quote:Here’s my solution. When a person is born, give him a birth certificate, an electronic medical record and a health savings account [HSA], to which money can be contributed, pre-tax from the time you are born, to the time you die. When you die, you can pass it on to your family members so that when you’re 85 years old and you’ve got 6 diseases, you’re not trying to spend up everything. You’re happy to pass it on and nobody is talking about death panels. That’s number one. Also, quote:When I pick up my Bible, you know what I see? I see the fairest individual in the Universe, God, and he’s given us a system. It’s called tithe. Now we don’t necessarily have to do it 10% but it’s principle. He didn’t say, if your crops fail, don’t give me any tithes. He didn’t say, if you have a bumper crop, give me triple tithes. So there must be something inherently fair about proportionality. You make $10 Billion dollars you put in a Billion. You make $10 you put in $1 – of course, you gotta get rid of the loopholes, but now now some people say, that’s not fair because it doesn’t hurt the guy who made $10 Billion dollars as much as the guy who made $10. Where does it say you have to hurt the guy. He’s just put in a billion in the pot. We don’t need to hurt him. I bet Herman Cain is pissed he didn't think of the Christian angle on that extra %. Maybe I'm saying this because I'm watching it unfold and it's so asinine, but in the history of black conservatism and its logic of racial uplift from like Booker T. to George Schuyler to now, Ben Carson might be the most interesting dude in the room. I want to write a book about this poo poo but it'd be like staring at the sun. How many Ben Carson quotes can you sift through before your brain vacates your skull?

A few key conservative virtues overlap with features of racist belief and behavior, like the valuation of conformity and hierarchy and the belief that simplicity is better than complexity. There's also another set of conservative virtues that makes them dismiss or ignore racism, like the denial of systemic inequality or cultural construction in favor of personal responsibility and equality of opportunity. This is all independent of Lee Atwater and the Republican strategy of courting racists and crafting narratives that appeal to them in particular.

Also that insurers should be regulated like non-profits and kept to a very low percentage of profit annually. And the government should provide catastrophic coverage so insurers don't have to cover it or include it in their risk assessments. Carson's basically like a stealth socialist on health care.
