I was acutely aware of SA since probably 2009-10 when I first got into Let's Play, but didn't actually read it until fairly recently.

Dude named Zach showed me a Photoshop phriday in late 2002, in English class senior year high school. I specifically remember seeing fiesta cat and "this is the winter of our discount tents" meme, both of which were the height of comedy. Lurked until I left for college and bought an account in my dorm room mid 2003.

I was aware of SA in the early 2000s, and enjoyed the stuff coming out of the photoshop thread and other image macros/protomemes. Didn't join because no credit card = no Joined in 2012 so I could play Eve with people who weren't reddit. I said something dumb in the thread as a joke, got flamed, and my application never got approved. I stopped playing after my trial ran out. Mostly didn't lurk or post much until 2019, and now I usually hang out in Cspam and all day.

I would like to figure out how to effectively get new people to check it out, in particular people who don't care for "new-style" social media sites but don't really know that old-style forums exist. Whang is actually one of the people I was going to consider approaching. I'm not into youtube at all, I have no idea what's out there in terms of "old internet" content on youtube and I don't really like internet video content myself, but if people here have ideas for where to go, I'm all ears. It's really hard to promote SA. A lot of younger people when they think of forums think of the worst sides of 4chan or other bad things. A lot who don't care for newer style social media just choose to not interact with social media at all or only use discord. I think the best way most internet sites spread is by people just naturally linking to them on other internet places, but forums have less appeal to link to them than social media.

Youtube trends older in demographics in comparison to tik tok and things like that, the average age is apparently something like 30-40 years old. Maybe some guys that fit that demo might be interested in talking about the site and do some cross promos?

What kept me and the fellow fans I knew in person paying attention to the site was the weekly PhotoshopPhriday and articles where Lowtax and Pals knocked something hilarious out of the park. The forums were also way more active in those days as there were interesting things actually happening that dovetailed into that sort of thing. PhotoshopPhriday in particular was a weird, horrifying abomination made out of equal parts forums and front page. I know that the quality and frequency of those things going down was part of why I drifted away. There was a time when was definitely worth it to the point where people were buying accounts for their friends. Now it is...less so. On the internet content is king and you have to provide people something they actually want. Lowtax for all his faults could usually at least write a funny article.

What kept me and the fellow fans I knew in person paying attention to the site was the weekly PhotoshopPhriday This was it for me too. I never even read the vast majority of it; I was only really interested in Photoshop Phriday and Comedy Goldmine and the regular updates form those were enough to keep me coming back. I originally discovered SA back in 2002 when I was looking for pictures of WW2 and a few images from the "World War Fun" Photoshop Phriday came up. I looked at some of the other photos for a while, then I left the site and went on with my day. Then, in 2003, I came across a link to the Terrible Secret of Space video from a different forum and I decided to visit a URL which I believe was either included in the video itself or was provided in the forum post. I decided to give it a try, and I remembered this was where I found the World War Fun pictures. After revisiting those photos again, I realized that Photoshop Phriday was (at that time) a weekly update, so from then on I would periodically come back to read each new update. Eventually I branched out to reading the Comedy Goldmine and some of the ICQ pranks, and eventually I discovered the forums.

Early 2000s, I would kill time at my job on different messageboards. There was a thread about 'best websites to visit daily' on like Gamespot forums or something. That brought me to SA, Fark and Fazed.net.

At one point the owner removed the link to the forums and new members were effectively nil. New posts became few and far between several years ago and the forums are all but dead now except for a few OGs calling out into the wilderness. Sorta sad as I had posted there for years but it was always second rate compared to SA so it’s just kind of whatever, I guess.

There was an excellent photoshop megathread back in the day that taught me everything I know about layers. i was on the periphery of SA from literally the first moment i started using the internet i think. i guess you could make the argument that virtually every corner of the internet in 2001 was SA-adjacent so maybe that's not terribly meaningful, but i just always hung out with people who were drawing on that SA energy and referencing stuff from here. i think my first real exposure to the source was the icq pranks. i didn't sign up for an account for a long time because i was a child with no credit card but i don't think i was ever really outside of SA's gravity well. the thing that sticks with me the most from those days is probably this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzYulkD13D0 which owned, and still owns ToxicSlurpee posted:As much as people go "THERE'S A FRONT PAGE?!?
