That will cause bills for the average customer to rise to £1,971.

I fixed in October for 2 years with Octopus literally days before the market went completely bananas.

Our flats communal electric though is on a fixed rate until this summer. Dreading what it will be after that! It has to be a business tariff so don't know what's happening with those.

We put the service charges up by 1% this year (they're pretty low even the 2 bed flats are only on £126 per month) but all the other stuff we have to do is going up as well.

My energy contract ends at the end of February, the variable tariff is twice what I pay now, and the fixed plans they're offering are a 3x-4x increase.

So, this £150 rebate coming in via council tax bills, (a) will those getting single persons' discount have 25% less rebate and (b) does this mean local authorities/councils will get £150 less per council tax bill so even less money to provide services?

(Not expecting posters to know the answers, but given the Goonipedia of this place, maybe!)

Even by tory standards this seems dumb

About the only thing that might ever shift the needle properly with the grate british public is when people are directly hit in the financials, and this is taking the piss

We don't care about corruption, we love racism, we revel in incompetence, and we don't mind if our lives get worse year by year as long as it happens slowly and we have the usual Hates to distract us

But this is so big and obvious and in your face

^^^ Ages ago someone pointed out (about Trump) that people don't care about rule breaking as long as its your guy breaking the rules for your benefit / your opponent's detriment. Like when the libs were demanding Biden pack the supreme court - if Trump had done the same, they'd be demanding the UN step in.

Previously the middle class (in which I include ex working class small business owners fuelled politically by spite) haven't given a poo poo because the poor and disabled have been the ones getting hammered by the rise of the cost of living and profit hunting via what should be non-profit public utilities. But now that it's big enough for the middle class to be hit, it'll be interesting to see how they react.

One takeaway from all this is that as soon as we all actually are all in this together (i.e. all feeling the pinch), the average brit goes loving insane because all they can really handle is an 'us and them' mentality, whether that's branding the poor and disabled 'benefits scroungers', demanding the ethnic cleansing of GRT communities, or sending the navy to hunt refugees in the channel for sport.

100%. Even in a parallel universe where Sue Grey's report explicitly said that the PM directly broke the law multiple times, all he'd have to say is "I apologise, but I don't accept that, jumped up civil servants shouldn't be dictating the law", and the consequences would be minimal.
Much as I dislike Starmer, the absolute brass of Johnson to stand up in parliament and say WRT Saville that it's 'the right thing for people to accept responsibility for what happens on their watch.'

KartooshFace, you are not responding efficiently!

I was confused by an email from my (Dutch) energy supplier that my monthly payment would go down. Turns out the government slashed taxes to counter the price rises, so it'll probably go back up to where it was when my fix ends. Putting the difference aside in any case.

Guess liberalism works after all Imagine being less socialist than Mark Rutte

So between the suspension of competition law and record production preceding a 50% energy price hike, the UK energy supply is now a fully formed cartel?

I'm impressed that there's no real effort to hide that there's no basis for any of this beyond capitalism, no "why", just "we're loving you and giving you a third back by loving your council" in a positive tone

There's nothing the blockchain does that couldn't be done by a centralised database, it's just that libertarians are so inherently untrustworthy they literally needed to invent a planet killer so that nobody could interfere with it (the blockchain is around 14 years old so actually interfering with it would be ephebophilia).
