I honestly felt bad for the guys at Drum during field exercises in the middle of winter. You've got the choice of whatever lovely hooch or cement slab you can manage, or you can be toasty warm on a cot in a buttoned up FLA while listening to my demented chainsaw peel paint off the plywood walls.

Don't get mad at people who snore; it's not their fault. Yeah, it's irritating as gently caress, but that's a physical condition that they need help for. I'm still trying to get that poo poo sorted out years later. Right before my ETS, the squadron's PA said in no uncertain terms that, because I'm not the textbook old, fat guy, there's no possible way that I could have sleep apnea, even though I saw loving logs (but only on my back, hmmm) and people have seen me stop breathing (hmmm). I wouldn't have even known about it had my own CO not seen me stop breathing in the back of the truck; he brought it up the next morning because another (old) guy had recently died in his sleep thanks to undiagnosed sleep apnea. Fake edit: I twice typed out and then deleted a little rant about lazy doctors and shitbag PA's, but nobody wants to read that. Point is, pay attention to your dudes and let them know what's up. Breathing is kind of important.

Why is sleep apnea so rampant in the Army? No joke about 75% of the NCOs in my old platoon had legit sleep study diagnosed sleep apnea. Two of them even had it bad enough they brought their CPAP machines to the field and would plug them in the Stryker.

It could have something to do with VA benefits (sleep apnea is apparently a big %). Also, it doesn't take much of a snore to get diagnosed. My personal experience is the CPAP is some great sleep. Like, I can't imagine not sleeping with it.

I don't have sleep apnea or snore but Monty snores like a loving freight train sometimes. He also howls in his sleep, though that's super rare. And he spasms. And yelps. It's so drat cute If a human is snoring I'm annoyed. Monty snoring rocks me to sleep though.

People with sleep apnea can do two things to prevent snoring: sleep on their side or stomach, and lose some loving weight. I have gotten in trouble for lobbing spitballs at a snoring obese chaplain in Jalalabad because gently caress it if I can't sleep why should he? I'd have a lot of a sympathy for anyone who isn't fat but still snores though. Aside from your case I almost never hear of it. Zeris fucked around with this message at 14:49 on Jun 23, 2017 |

If I sleep on my stomach, my lower back hurts all day. If I sleep on my side, my shoulders are sore for a few hours in the morning. If I sleep on my back, I snore. My body is defective.

I don't always, but I can snore pretty bad sleeping on my back, which I do more often because of back issues. When under a lot of stress or if I drink before bed, it can be worse. Went to the doc to get looked at and the response was basically by the civilian off-post specialist "you're not fat, and you don't have the throat/nose/etc that leads to snoring, tell your spouse to get over it and that it's no biggie." So then I pushed for a sleep study and the way that worked at the time was some off-post tech would not call me for like a month, then they'd call at about 6 PM and ask if I could be in by 7, and I had better not have had any caffeine or alcohol in the last 24 hours, which of course I'd had one of the two when they're calling me on a Sunday night, and also it seemed like they magically knew when I had stuff I absolutely could not miss rear end-early the next morning. Said tech guy would be angry that this was a surprise to me, I'd tell him it was never scheduled ahead of time, he'd say they'd fix it with the scheduler. Repeat 3 times before I said gently caress it, and maybe I'll try again next post. I also reported symptoms of this weird exploding head syndrome poo poo: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/exploding-head-syndrome-is-real-and-surprisingly-common/ The off-post doctor told me sometimes houses or apartments make noise. Lady, gently caress you, I only have it with any regularity when under a lot of stress, and I'm pretty sure my apartment doesn't make mechanical noises like "someone pounding on my door" or "banshee scream" or "my cellphone ringing" or "cellphone vibration alert" without any evidence of the above actually having happened. The pounding on door phantom noise is fun, because eventually I got very, very good at being at the door with a gun super fast and never saw any evidence whatsoever of a real person. Being less pissed off or stressed and petting a cat before I go to bed seem to reduce the experience from entirely too damned often to once in a blue moon, though, so that's nice.

I snore if I'm sick. I was sick when I went to basic training and was snoring so loud I was keeping everybody in that big rear end 100 person bay awake and they started hitting me with pillows.

Get muscular and your shoulders won't hurt from side sleeping. (This isn't a "you're a weak bitch"post, it was more of a "I didn't realize it till I put on some muscle mass.") Or get a better pillow/bed. I love my Yogabed. And putting a pillow between your legs is actually really good for spinal alignment and back pain. I really need to get a sleep study done, find where the gently caress my medical records are with the complaints of snoring/headaches/lethargy/etc and hit the VA up about it. lovely side bonus is I don't have to try super hard to get chicks to go the gently caress home at the end of the the night, just play a recording of me snoring on my sound system and the point gets made.

A big rear end body pillow between my knees is what means the difference between a sore back and a great sleep. I feel old as hell for even thinking about it, but it helps amazingly. And especially after getting used to it, sleeping without leaves me feeling weird in a way where I just lay there and think "why the gently caress are my knees touching each other!?".

Are you already in the system? If so call your local VA provider for an appointment, complain that your wife says you stop breathing at night (or you feel tired all day), and have him set you up for a sleep study. Go to the sleep study. You can argue, on appeal, that conditions you saw a doctor for after you ETS'd are related to your military service (just so long as it isn't more than a year or so since you got out). Also, if you have any buddies who were in with you, and heard you snoring/stopping breathing/whatever, they can do a witness statement that counts as evidence. There's even an official VA form for witness testimony on injuries. Here it is for you: https://www.vba.va.gov/pubs/forms/VBA-21-4138-ARE.pdf Find a buddy who still remembers you snoring your rear end off and have him fill it out (if you need the evidence). *edit* I've helped two old vets get their benefits due to getting those witness statements from other Soldiers who were there when they got injured. One was a broken nose (that hosed up his breathing) in the first day of the invasion of Iraq, that he never got treated because it was a loving war.

That guy with the broke nose also had a photo of himself right after he broke it (blood everywhere but smiling) that was submitted too.
