That does sound a lot like Mono, but in a good way. It's not like post-rock isn't full of songs that sound the same though, just like any genre where people use conventional Western chord progressions and melodies. Like that one My Education song. e: that Eupana album is on Spotify by the way, listening now!

Here is a link to a really informative video on the guitar set ups of RUSSIAN CIRCLES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfTkHgfS-NU Even if you aren't a musician yourself, you'll get a feel for how a 3-piece can create such a dense and complex sound live. Apparently they use looped cycles of sequences (played live) controlled by pedals and play over those. It was recorded as they worked in the studio on the album Memorial.

It's a bit odd, but I got into them (and Minus the Bear) by watching these! Songs like Mladek become even more interesting when you're aware of the crazy guitar work going on. For the non-guitar/bass types, there's a 4-part interview with their drummer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6K_iV1qLBU It's similar in how it lets you in on their approach to composition, tone and so on. yeastiality fucked around with this message at 06:51 on Jun 11, 2015 |

Pro-click there. Interesting the way he talks about the difficulties they had with the first bassist "wanting to do too much" and essentially playing too complicatedly. I guess Turncrantz does the layering thing by having a bass and cymbals with a lot of resonance and sustain, which means he can play figures over that. So it's a fine balance between virtuoso playing and making things too complex so that they fall apart.

This week I started listening to ISIS again after a long break from them for whatever reason. God loving drat ISIS is good. Leaning on the heavier side of Post-Rock, or what I guess people call Post-Metal, if you like the genre at all you need to give them a few hours of your time. Start with Panopticon. From there go to their final album Wavering Radiant then head to In the Absence of Truth and Oceanic. ISIS disbanded in 2010 stating that they've done what they wanted to do and wanted to go out on a high note. I really can't over-emphasize how exquisite ISIS' music is.

They also put out remasters of Oceanic and Panopticon. Oceanic in particular benefits from it a lot I think.

I...what? I was going through my Facebook and saw that my uncle posted that he was going to an ASIWYFA show He's in his 50s, his music taste is the complete opposite of this and that's not a band I would think would even remotely be in his wheelhouse. How did he even hear about them? My brain hurts right now. I've never even gotten to see ASIWYFA!

My favorite obscure post-rock act is this Korean band called Jambinai. They use a mix of Western rock instruments and traditional Korean instruments to get their sound, which oscillates back and forth between gorgeous, swaying post-rock and neofolk-influenced post-metal. Their album "Differance" is some good poo poo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-L251mn7ok

Yo, so I pre-ordered the Caspian 10th anniversary show live Blu-Ray (Live At Larcom) back in April and just received it in the mail today. Hooooooly poo poo, this thing is so good. The sound mixing is out of this world. And it pretty accurately conveys the intensity of being at a Caspian show. If you've seen them before or if you haven't but you've wanted to, you need to get your hands on a copy of this thing. I know only a few things fall into this category, but this is easily one of the best post-rock concert films I've ever seen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Btqn9hbZgNE Rageaholic fucked around with this message at 01:02 on Jun 30, 2015 |
