SAITO BROTHERS HAHAHAHAHAHA

Saito Brothers got more mentions than Kento Miyahara, the actual best wrestler in the world. Tokyo Sport is such a hoot.

May 6, 2007

Naito feels like a pick they just gave to New Japan cause it's the top promotion and not cause he was actually the MVP. Though also lol Dave trying to say Will should get the vote when Will and Okada couldn't even sell out Ota Ward gym in the G1

GAME PLANS? We don't need no stinking game plans.

Okada had a heap of really good gates too. That stands out as his most disappointing of the year. Him and shingo sold out (admittedly somewhat restricted ) edion like 10 days early.

The idea that ospreay is more valuable to Japanese wrestling than naito is silly. We've all been around the block we know exactly what criteria Tokyo sports uses.

They went muto show and g1 final Bing bang naito wins because okada spent the back end of the year doing gently caress all and sanada has been up and down as champ.

SatoshiMiwa
May 6, 2007

Yeah Will is easily my World Wide wrestler of the year based on match quality and having some decent gates (and MJF's back half of the year was disappointing and Roman disappeared after Summerslam except for Blood Money) but he's nowhere close to being a Japan MVP like say Kento or Naito. And his year was nowhere close to years where Foreigners should of won (Kenny's IWGP year and Vader in All Japan)

They're pretty explicit that it was COVID and less explicitly the softness of the market in Japan.

Having to negotiate with each prefectural government on venue regulations/hire on a promotion by promotion basis and enduring way longer clap crowds than other sports is the problem that this organisation is meant to solve.

If they're smart they won't do cross-promotional shows under the banner. It's a lobby group.

Always a possibility, Big Japan was probably the most likely promotion to get bought out and used as the shell for NXT Japan so anything that protects it is good.

I haven't heard much about how COVID has affected Japan. Obviously the combination of density and age means there's vulnerability in Japan, and culturally they're more engaged with fighting airborne pathogens, but I have no idea to what extent they're still restricting things ~4 years on.

They're not restricting a ton now, but wrestling was designated as Theater instead of Sports and the restrictions were much much heavier on them for much longer. Kidani (I believe) had to personally lobby the government to get cheering restrictions reduced for 1.4.23 and the finances for every company were impacted for a lot longer than necessary
