Anyone have any experience with / opinions of Dove Pro? They just dropped a bunch of shows on IWTV, and the product looks very polished for a hardcore oriented indie. Currently watching GAINA and TORU vs Chris Dickinson and Tida Heat, which is set to a grime soundtrack. I didn't think the music would work when the match started, but it's actually added a lot to the watching experience.

It is sort of amusing to me that a small digital print shop in Chicago managed in 7 years to become a permanent part of the wrestling infrastructure just by doing business with Colt Cabana and his friends.

forkboy84 posted:

So to start with, I'll list a bunch of the streaming services

NJPW World - Does what it says on the tin. It's New Japan & occasionally matches from NJPW affiliated companies featuring NJPW guys
Dragon Gate Network - This is a loving weird service. It's 500 Yen a month more expensive than New Japan, & shows are up live for a week, then get take down until they air on GAORA, which can be a month or so. They are finally getting better with their archive, they are uploading Toryumon shows every month & have a lot of the bigger shows in DG history. Plus for modern big shows they even do English commentary now, & the promotion is really great. But the price & the way stuff comes off for a while is super weird so it's hard to recommend unless you know you want to watch DG. Which sucks because more people would love this promotion if they'd watch it.
Wrestle Universe - Top value. You get DDT, you get Tokyo Joshi Pro, you get some NOAH (some NOAH ends up on Abema TV which is free to watch & then gets uploaded to Universe after a week anyway), & you get the weird DDT offshoots like Ganbare & the Rojo street wrestling stuff. Honestly a service everyone with an interest in Japanese wrestling should watch as it has a bit of everything. NOAH is the best booked promotion of 2020 & honestly my favourite by some distance, DDT's weekly TV was the highlight of the era where there were no crowds & a lot of promotions were just on hiatus. TJPW is TJPW.
AJPW TV - They show a lot of shows live, when they don't it usually gets uploaded as a VOD afterwards. They have also started uploading 1 "classic" match but as far I know that means from 2000 or afterwards as NTV still have the rights to classic stuff. But hey, that stuff is pretty easy to find online where as Gold Dustin & Hakushi vs TAJIRI & Muta? Not so easy. Until now.
Stardom World - It's fine. I just wish they'd do live streams instead of just VOD but I guess we're spoiled these days.
NicoNico - It's 550 Yen a month & they show a lot of indies & produce shows. Like TAKA Michinoku's promotion Just Tap Out, Hard Hit, FREEDOMS, SEaDLINNNG, Ice Ribbon. Usually the shows are 1 camera setups with commentary from one or two of the performers on the show. Ice Ribbon also have their own channel which streams much more stuff

This is really useful information, thanks.

Question for those with experience using these streaming services: how easy is it to stream them to a TV? Getting NJPWWorld working with my TV has been an absolute ordeal (had to drag out an old Fire streaming stick because streaming from my phone to the tv just never worked). Do any of the others either have a Roku app or easy streaming?

finally gave in to the pressure for more good Japanese wrestling and subscribed to Wrestle Universe. Other than just "start watching", where's good to start?

Currently watching the D King Grand Prix show that dropped today but I'm aware this is most of the way through a tournament featuring mostly guys I don't know plus Chris Brookes (on whatever night he's on). Is there a better approach, or should I just immerse?

Junta Miyawaki vs Yasutaka Yano

Miyawaki is skilled, Yano is green. Which make this match look a bit like an act of bullying. I've seen Junta tag before and he seems decent for someone three years into his career, but I'm waiting to see a flash of brilliance from him. Yasutaka Yano has good young lion energy. His size and build make me feel like he needs to work on strikes and agility, neither of which is his strong suit yet. Perfectly respectable young lion vs slightly older lion match

Manabu Soya vs Tadasuke

Ah, Tadasuke and your unnervingly full lips. Soya's hair is an incongruous create-a-wrestler detail that I really like, it's nice to see a muscle boy with a soft detail to him. Tadasuke's tope con hero was pretty good, but it looked like he caught his feet on the ring barrier. Overall this was a fun match but I didn't feel for a moment that Soya was going to lose.

Go Shiozaki & Naomichi Marufuji vs Akitoshi Saito & Masao Inoue

The battle of Old Guys versus Star Power. I kind of love Marufuji's "scene kid who never moved on" gear. The problem with Inoue doing a "hesitating while entering the ring" spot is that he's just reached the age where you wonder if he tweaked a knee and can't move any further. It's weird to see Go Shiozaki play a young upstart role when he's 38 and the world champion. As a newcomer to Noah, I think I need to see more Marufuji, some of his moments in this were great, especially a hook kick he did fairly late in the match. On the whole this is a good tag match: Marufuji and Shiozaki work around Saito and Inoue's limitations pretty well, and while there are some clumsy spots (what was Inoue thinking with that second rope shoulder tackle? He just looked like he was falling) it was pretty enjoyable.

Kongo (Katsuhiko Nakajima & Masa Kitamiya) vs Yoshiki Inamura & Kinya Okada

Nakajima has such a strong "it" factor. I like that this match let the big lads go at it first, although as always my first thought on seeing Kitamiya was "wow, Soya washed that hair dye out quickly". Najajima has an interestingly effortless form of athleticism, he reminds me of Tetsuya Naito in that respect. I'm trying to work out if Inamura is a deceptively agile big guy or just an oaf who is in the right place at the right time a lot. Kinya Okada has some very crisp looking moves. His bridge after one of his suplexes was really nice, and he lays his strikes in well. I just want to see somethng that sets him apart from the pack. This was a good tag match, but it was also the fourth match in a row where the finish seemed entirely obvious.

Haoh vs Nioh

Time for Opponents In Similar Tights. Is there an explanation on commentary why these two stablemates are fighting, or did they just want a match? It's a spirited junior heavyweight affair... until my stream breaks halfway through. Switching to casting from my phone. Nioh is obviously dominant here, and wrestles a good match. Haoh seems more passive, and doesn't take all the opportunities for offense he's given. However, his top rope rana was very well performed. The man who was always going to win won.

Kenoh & Jinsei Shinzaki vs Kaito Kiyomiya & Daiki Inaba

Kaito Kiyomiya is such a JRPG protagonist. A youthful pretty babyface in an absurdly big jacket. Oh hey, it's Hakushi! (yes, I know that Jinsei Shinzaki has had much greater success uner anything other than that name). I wonder if Daiki Inaba feels bad about being the only guy in this match not to get his own entrance music. This is the first match where I can at least conceptually grab either side winning (Kenoh and Shinzaki are going to win). It took me a little while to look past Kenoh's absurd hair to see the very good wrestler underneath. SHinzaki is in absurdly good shape for a 54 year old. He's not lightning fast, but he's brutal and ethodical and very quickly puts Kiyomiya in the Young Upstart In Trouble role, which is a perfectly fun story. This match started fun and quickly got great, with Shinzaki breaking out all sorts of good stuff like rope walking. Daiki Inaba is talented, muscular, athletic, and looks way too much like Norman Wisdom and Lee Evans for me to take him seriously. Fun fact: Kenoh and Kaito Kiyomiya have been in matches against each other 123 times. That's 23% of Kiyomiya's matches. Other fun fact: this tag match is loving awesome. A very good match. And Kenoh and Shinzaki won.

DDT D-Ou The Final thoughts

Toi Kojima vs Hideki Okatani

DDT young boys make their quick journeys to the ring. Toi in yellow trunks, Hideki in brown. Spirited affair to start off. Both look like they're progressing nicely, but Toi looks just a little further on. Apparently this is Toi's debut, and if so he's looking pretty good. A short bout, but Hideki looked good in victory and it was an impressive debut for Toi.

Toru Owashi vs Antonio Honda vs Nobuhiro Shimatani

Honda is one of my favourites based purely on his work in ChocoPro. I appreciate Toru Owashi becaushe sometimes you just need a big lad. This is silly from the get-go, with Honda getting into some Bugs Bunny antics. Shimanti breaking up the kiss made him the biggest heel in wrestling. Honda tricksters his way to victory. Fun.

Sanshiro Takagi & Danshoku Dieno vs Nayashiro Nayagi & Super Sasadango Machine

I'm never sure about Danshoku Dino's comedy, and even less so when the joke is "his rear end is disgusting". The match told the joke well enough, but when I don't care that much for the joke I can't say that's an unalloyed good.

Eruption (Kazusada Higuchi, Yukio Sakaguchi & Saki Akai) vs Makoto Oishi, Mizuki Watase & Tomomitsu Matsunaga

I love the consistency and variation of Eruption's ring gear. They look coherent as a unit but also individual as competitors. Higuchi is a beast. This is a chaotic six man but there's some really good stuff in it. I especially liked Sakagushi's selling for Oishi et al, he managed to look like he was in peril without looking weak. And sets things up nicely for Higuchi coming in and just murdering people. I liked the spot of using Saki Akai as a weapon a la Luther / Serpentico. The elevated iron claw Higushi used at the end was incredible. I like this trio, and want to see them grow. Maybe a feral maid should escort them to the ring.

Damnation (Tetsuya Endo, Soma Takao, Yuji Hino & Mad Paulie) vs Chris Brookes, HARASHIMA, Keigo Nakamura & Shinya Aoki

Match expanded from a 6 man to an 8 man since I got the line up so apologies if I got names wrong. Wow, Yuji Hino is beefy. I always love Keigo Nakamura's facial expressions. Give me Harashima and Hino thumping the poo poo out of each other forever please. God, things just light up when we get Brookes vs Endo. These guys are so fast and so fluid together. This is an incredibly well structured 8-man. Nobody wears out their welcome, nobody gets lost in the shuffle, and we get glimpses of what a lot of fun matches would look like. Also, loving HELL, that Hino frog splash was just ludicrous.

KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Titles: Akito, Kazuki Hirata & Shota(c) vs Shunma Katsumata, MAO & Yuki Ueno

Lego boy and his pals! Big fan of this trio of weirdos. Katsumata is a talented chaos goblin, and both MAO and Ueno are superb athletic wrestlers. Less familiar with the current champs, who seem to lack cohesion in their look. Nice green and purple tights, Shota. Ueno and Hirata are a good pairing to start with and do some great gymnastic stuff against each other. Mao has this strong shades of grey babyface energy to him, like he's not as chaotic as Katsumata but not as straight arrow as Ueno. On the other side, Akito and Shota work very well together as a unit, to the point where Hirata despite being clearly the leader of his trio seems like the odd man out. Hahaha, the leapfrog splash spots from opposite corners were insane. Shota pulls out a win and I'm just... not sure how or why. I'm sure they have fun plans, I just liked the other team more.

D-Ou Grand Prix Final: Jun Akiyama vs Konosuke Takeshita

Other than a few of his tournament matches I'm not that familiar with Takeshita. Seeing him take on an opponent of twice his age with considerably more experience is going to be interesting. Akiyama is dominant from early in the match and stays dominant throughout. Takeshita's offense when it comes is well executed, his dragon screw is savage and a real tide-turner, but I wouldn't be able to say he was dominant even on the attack. This sets up an interesting story where Takeshita has to try and exploit every chance he gets because he knows that he's going to get methodically dismantled otherwise. As Takeshita finds his feet and his strength later we get some great spots, like a strike exchange that leaves both of them reeling. The increasingly desperate pin attempts really reinforce the different motivations of the wrestlers. He's unable to overcome the beast, and Jun Akiyama wins a hard fought victory. This match was gruelling but it was rewarding.

All in all a good tournament final show. It balanced humour and action well and gave a final result that has really storytelling implications.

NOAH have uploaded two of their recent shows (The Chronicle 4 and Final Chronicle) to Wrestle Universe with English commentary. I believe these are the same shows previously available with English commentary on Fite.

Commentary isn't bad. They're going for much more of a sports feel than usual pro wrestling commentary and their play by play man Stewart Fulton is I believe a commentator for Pancrase. However they haven't quite got the rhythm yet. It's very move-oriented coverage rather than going with the flow. I'm certain that will improve with time though, and for prople who have difficulties following with only Japanese commentary it's a big bonus.

Due to Super Sasadango Machine being snowed in and unable to make it to the venue, he has turned this match into a tax deductible fashion show (anything the wrestlers wear in the ring they can claim on their expenses). The problem is that it's a fashion show with Saki Akai in, so obviously she wins and everyone else loses.
