I assume it’s as bad as NZ. Here Sky TV has the rights to Discovery, but we don’t even get the Motortrend replacement for Discovery Turbo, so paying for that is pointless. MTOD started out fine but then geoblocked us out of all the originals. gently caress ‘em now if they don’t want to take my money.

So Cleetus is getting shade for throwing a big public event during the pandemic. Caused some poo poo on Insta with a rant about freedom and not letting the news tell you to stay home, now his latest video about the event even has comments disabled and he goes on a little rant, talking about how it’s safe around their area, the hospitals are empty and they’ve been out meeting people all the time and they’re perfectly fine, his event was safe, people come at their own risk etc. You know, the kind of poo poo people like Boris and Trump spouted right before they caught the virus themselves.

I love the guy and his content, but for fucks sake, that’s some famous last words poo poo. Between this, the monster truck rolling in his pond and the kid who’s passenger compartment mounted radiator exploded all over him, shits looking dicey. Freedom isn’t free, and neither is insurance cover.

The stupid thing is he doesn’t need to run in person events! He could happily keep pumping out safely filmed content till the danger passes, but hey, Florida I guess. The Hoonigan guys at least are all masked up and seem to be trying to distance.

Yeah at first with Brunning it was a few comments that suggested he was economically right, bootstraps kinda thing, which is wrong but OK, we can agree to disagree there, but it’s got progressively worse. Some of it is fair like “if we aren’t closing X then why aren’t we closing Y” (Because Boris is a tit, that’s why) but it soon became “the economy!!” and such. But in fairness, so far he keeps it out of the videos, we don’t have to follow his personal socials.

The only gun channel I watch is Demo Ranch specifically because he keeps his politics out of it. I certainly have very different opinions on gun control than he does, but I can also enjoy watching hm blow poo poo up with weapons I’ll never get even close to. He occasionally bitches about YouTube’s weird and changeable policies around gun channels but that’s fair. There’s not a lot of making going on, but I have seen them, he sells them, and I’m happy to give people the benefit of the doubt, they may be taking other practical precautions with regards to distancing, bubbles, health checks etc. Importantly, he’s not out there railing against them like a loon.

Is it fair that as a foreigner I look at these guys tho and think “Florida, Georgia, Texas, well that makes sense”?

According to Wikipedia at least, kinda?

The EcoBoost engines have different turbochargers, Ford-designed heads, different direct injection systems along with featuring Ford's Ti-VCT variable valve timing system instead of Mazda's S-VT.

I think he’s good. Very strong opinions but can always back them up.

His earlier video in the Hagerty series on the new Supra is excellent with some great driving. Another one on the Benz 500E was great too. I also dig the Magnus Walker films too.

The Retropower UK channel is a great follow too. They jut posted a big update on Project Utah, a Mark 2 Jag custom with an ITB 2JZ, manual and custom EVERYTHING. The level of detail and engineering is amazing.

There are some serious problems with his "facts" there tho. The Mk IV was a fat cruiser and really was not anything close to a handling champion and no supercar hunter (It's a GT so topline razor handling and extreme speed are NOT what it was about), that was convincingly done in by the other JDM 206Kw cars - like the GTR, the RX7, the first of the EVOWRX and just come on what was the MR2 if not a sports car? Chopped liver? He's also making the core mistake of trying to project the fact the Supra was / is a tuner's delight and what it could be as a result onto the stock version. Sure you can throw cubic cash and build a poo poo hot actual supercar mauler but that's not what the factory car was at all.

Also maybe the Yaris in the USA was a Mazda for part of the nameplate's existance and then in some models but isnt anywhere else, that's a thing he really should be qualifiying else OS viewers are going to WTF no it's not a Mazda?

I agree with you completely but also figure there’s no point raging against the American mindset of myth and legend that surrounds these cars largely because of one slightly ridiculous movie and a video game. It’s a battle long lost. On the Yaris thing I’m simply not bothered by an American journo speaking about an American market car to to an American audience. Top Gear/Grand Tour have been shows with a global audience for years and yet are still incredibly UK centric as well. It’s what people do. Relax guy!

I think there’s two groups, the deniers who are just rocking business as usual, and the others who are taking precautions like masks and distancing seriously day to day, but for production are relying on frequent testing and safe practices, in order to not wear masks on screen. For sure there’s a difference between the vloggers and the guys working with real production teams.

I really dug MCM's recent video showing Moogs amazing woodworking shed. Neat stuff.

I think I've posted this before, but The Lab is a local guy who does weird and wonderful work for customers and himself has a VK45 swapped D40 Navara and a bonkers K12 March time attack car - with a 700hp twin turbo VQ35 mounted backwards, in the rear, driving a custom 4WD system. Oh at one point the original 3 door shell was destroyed, so he got a new 5 door shell and converted it to 3 door. In a tiny garage.

Here's an older vid with a walkaround of the car, currently he's swapping in a sequential gearbox, making some changes and doing some creative weight removal. Shot very basically but it's an insanely cool project.

I might not be the most reliable judge however because I think the late Bangle designs aged WAY better than everyones darlings, the E46/E39. Especially from the rear 3/4 view, the E60 5'er could be a brand new car.

Might give his vidoes another try.

I think Matt's a bit hard done by because he's strongly opinionated and has financial success, which yes is partly because he comes from a privileged background (which he fully admits) but also, the guy's a hardworker too. Recently he's been talking about mental health struggles too, which I think is great for a guy in his position to do, it can reach people who otherwise might not hear the message.

A little like Smee150 too. Yes he comes across as a classic posh voiced rich kid and has many expensive supercars (that he regularly drives hard), but again, he's worked hard for his success, posting an average of a video a day since Youtube started, and it sounds like his background was "comfortable" not uber wealthy. Worth checking out the interview he did with Jonny Smith.

It was a wild idea at the time hampered by lack of electronics support, hence having to transplant literally everything across. If you wanted to do it properly you'd presumably just slap the engine in and rewire to an aftermarket ECU/TCU, but they didn't have time with their schedule so it just got Roadkilled in. Which hey, is wild in itself! That they got it working as well as it ended up working (aforementioned failure notwithstanding) is a miracle in itself! But all the modern poo poo slapped in looked dumb, and ultimately, it's his car and he liked it better the other way, so he's putting it back. Anyone else is welcome to build their own Hellcat swapped clapped out Charger, what someone else does with theirs is up to them.

To me, late model engine swaps aren't any more or less boring than slapping the same boring cam and carb at a boring old motor that we've been doing for like 70 years cos Freiburger or Dulcich can fix it on the side of the road with a screwdriver and a hammer (except for the times they can't). Some swaps are good and some aren't so good.

Here's a good example, LS swapped E30's aren't uncommon, right? Probably pretty boring yeah?

Except these guys built a stunning 8-into-1 exhaust and the thing sounds WILD:

Not even really about planning differences - after all, someone in the UK had to plan to build the bridges and roads to the north and south of the ford in question, just not fixing what ain't broken. It's not getting replaced because alternate routes exist AND because of the heritage values.

And yes, many routes would have been laid down in Roman times, but also plenty of routes probably go back much further than that. You'll likely find the same in the US too. River crossings for man and beast have been a thing as long as humans have been around.

Auckland has two streets called "Portage Road", one about 3km long, the other only about 1.3km, both named because they follow almost exactly the route used by Māori to portage their waka (canoes) between east coast and west coast harbours for as much as 800 years. To bring this back to AI - while there is a Māori loan word for car (motukā, you can probably figure out how that word came about), colloquially calling your car a waka is more common.

We also have a ford! It's in a tiny settlement serving maybe 100 homes, then unsealed roads to a regional park and remote beach.
