It's going to be plugged into my live looping rig thingy, and also probably taken down to the local park to play to the squirrels.

[edit] I'm also redesigning the looping rig around the Eigenharp Tau, switching it on for the first time in years. The didge will be fixed somewhere on this frame.

I can't stop buying instruments. I think I might have a problem...

A 17 note electric kalimba is my latest purchase (should be arriving by the end of the week). This purchase was inspired by the amazingly inspirational looper BinkBeats, who uses these in his huge looping rigs connected to various effects.

In my current "I can't stop buying instruments" phase, I ordered a 10 string Lyre harp other day which should be here soon. Just over £30 on Amazon.

And my next purchase, once I sell the Eigenharp Tau is to get a LinnStrument 128:

It landed earlier today, and I'm really impressed with the build quality. This is the model that I purchased, and it took about a week to get to me. As the instruments are quite basic (no frets), I'm not sure if there is a huge difference between 'good' and 'bad' ones... It's staying in tune, and produces a nice acoustic tone. I'm going to fix a piezo pickup to it later and add it to the acoustic looping rig.

I'm going to experiment and add a couple of higher gauge strings to the lower end and gently caress around with tunings. I have no idea how they are meant to be tuned. lol

e: Google suggests a diatonic C scale is apparently the standard tuning.

e2: I may end up getting a few of these, and modding them. One of the pegs wasn't manufactured properly, and needs to be removed and replaced with pliers (and just needs a bit of metal filing). I may go a bit further and try a bass string on there and see what happens. But I've been having fun with the remaining 9 strings and pegs that work well. I've moved well away from the C tuning, and the instrument hasn't snapped, and neither has the strings. I have the pickup on there, but I haven't checked the electric sound yet. I'm having too much fun with acoustic only.

£70 including delivery? I thought these were much more expensive. Order placed.

Its initial use is to be able to play the violin again WITH A BOW for the first time in 13 years, using it a bit like this, but with the newer SWAM 'The Violin' library.

My New Year's purchase is probably going to be a Bryce Fretless Electric 6 String Guitar.

I've got a knackered Crafter Cruiser strat copy that I'm going to turn fretless over the Christmas break to see if I get on with it well. I rarely play more than one note at a time when I loop using the guitar, and as my main instrument used to be the violin, I find frets to be annoying.

I wish I had the balls to try a fretless guitar. I play a ton of ambient guitar and I feel like it would be the most enjoyable thing matched with volume swells/delay/reverb. Maybe I should try a fretless bass first.

The Crafter Cruiser that I'm going to modify before potentially buying the Bryce fretless only cost £20 second hand. It's easy to remove frets (I use a soldering iron and pincers), and I'm going to just use wood filler to fill the gaps. Something like this would give you an idea if a fretless 6 string is for you.

Wow. I just watched a few videos of this guitar. It's pricey at over £1000, but if I had the money, I'd buy one in an instant.

In other news, the Crafter Cruiser is now fretless, sanded and the fret holes filled with woodfiller. The whole task took about 15 minutes. I just need to wait for the filler to dry, then a quick final sand and then restring.

The amount of zen half naked dudes playing these things seems to speak to that a little.

I was trained on the violin from 6-16, and that was my main instrument til my mid 30's. I was also taught piano, and keys have been my main instrument since I fell ill, though I've also recently picked up guitar, ukes and bass for the first time.

The Linnstrument seems to be ideal regardless of your background. It looks very intuitive, and Roger has said that most people adapt to it very quickly. It's easier to play than the piano for instance.... On a keyboard, you have to learn 12 fingerings for a scale depending on the root note. On the Linnstrument, you only need to learn one.

The thing that I'm most looking forward to are the polyphonic slides and vibratos from one note to the next. I genuinely can't wait...

My PC is a 3rd gen i5 laptop, and it couldn't cope running OBS to record everything as well as plugging in the Leap Motion, and using the new SWAM violin library... so I'm going to connect the audio out of the RC-505 into Q2n, and be able to record every note that I play.

fuctifino

I went for the Zoom Q2n because it has an awesome built in mic, as well as a 160 degree field of view - so it can capture a lot more than most other cameras. It also has a noise free 3.5mm audio in socket, so you can plug it straight into audio equipment, and it can record at 1080p with 24-bit/96 kHz audio in mp4 format.

It's great for me, as I'm able to just hit record, then upload the raw files to youtube. It would also be good enough to extract audio and video to post edit if you have a PC powerful enough for that sort of thing... I did a lot of research to find the best gadget for the least amount of money, and the Q2n really stood out from the crowd.

What's another £150 on top of a pile of existing debt?... a Quik-Lok 926L double tier stand.

It's amazingly sturdy, and offers the needed support for the mounted linnstrument. There's absolutely no bounce with the arms.

Finally... not a purchase, but a gift... Emanuel, the owner of Audio Modeling gifted me the SWAM double reed library, meaning that I now have oboe, cor anglais, contrabassoon and bassoon to my mix. Now to wire everything up and dive in... I may be gone some time.

e: Updated image with everything turned on.

vvv Yup, I agree 100%. I tried cheaping out with some cheap tiger and stagg stands, and they just didn't cut it. One of them became structurally unstable after I bolted the monitor on it, and the others just gave too much bounce on the arms.

My 420 :420: impulse purchase arrived an hour ago. I've nearly finished building it -

I've never played the drums before, but I had advice from a good drummer re: what to get. He advised me to get the Alesis Nitro Mesh.

When I loop with the Variax guitar, I only ever use my thumb to pluck, so I'm thinking that the other fingers can permanently hold a baton or drum stick that can reach out and slowly layer up rhythm in the spaces between the notes. The idea works in my head at least... and I've been practising holding a marker pen and tapping my cat with it while playing...

I picked up one of these this week:

It's a TC-Helicon Perform-VK vocal effects unit and harmoniser. It has a really good auto EQ/Compressor/De-esser, some great reverbs as well as a really natural pitch correction. It also has automatic harmonising, so you can play a chorded instrument into the unit and it will harmonise the vocals based on the chords. But what blows me away is that you can actually play the notes you want to sing on the keyboard, sending it to the unit via MIDI... and just speak into the microphone. It's a great bit of kit.

(Quick demo of me playing my new choir https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt9BPK8chLw, mucking around with the male to female pitch shift at the end)

When I was soloing vocals, I noticed that I was half-singing around a 5th out of tune, due to not being able to hear myself properly.

It's a truly amazing gadget, and so simple to use (which is great for my CFS addled brain).

They do 4 in the range. A basic one for solo vocalists, one for guitar or other chorded instruments (where it auto harmonises), one for sampling/DJ'ing and this one. This also auto harmonises based on audio chorded input, but I actually prefer playing the notes on the keyboard via midi. You can also pitch bend and add vibrato using the mod wheel on the keyboard.

It's the most fun musical gadget I've ever stumbled across. The possibilities it gives me are endless. I was looping Tibetan throat chanting last night and adding a Portishead-type female vocal over the top (just an octave pitch shift + some warbly fx)... then at a press of a button, I can get my Gregorian choir.

Get one. You know you want one. Why haven't you got one yet? ;)

I don't know where to post this.... so here's a good a place as any.

After a long period of lovely health, I seem to have managed to build a thing. There are a few new controllers in there, but it's mostly old stuff with the conjoining of two live looping full impro workflows - the RC505, and the Synthstrom Deluge.

There's also a Micromonsta wavetable synth and a 1010Music Lemondrop granular synth connected to the Deluge and all midi controllers bar the Linnstrument, Microkey61 and FCB1010 peadlboard are also piped into the Deluge.

The FCB1010 has a custom chip that allows me to control the RC505 looper utilising all 12 buttons on the pedalboard.

The Linnstrument is used to play SWAM Violin, Cello, Oboe and Bassoon and potentially SurgeXT at some point. The Korg Microkey 61 is used for Pianoteq (mostly Steinway Piano). All these are selected and controlled using the Korg Nanodesk. The audio from the blind daw is piped exclusively into the RC505, but I'm going to find a way to also pipe it into the granular synth's audio in.

There's also a TC-Helicon Perform VK vocal processor. Apart from allowing me to sing soprano or bass (and in tune), it also allows me to play a full choir using any of the keyboards, and do weird and whacky things sequencing the midi on the Deluge.... I'm still waiting for the proper power supply for the processor, as it doesn't work properly without it. This is piped into the audio in of the RC505, but again I'm also going to find a way to pipe it into the granular synth.

She came alive this evening :toot: :420:

e: The last time I used the Linnstrument + Swam was July last year, and this was one of the final bursts of that time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlDzLrue-X4

And I made a Deluge sick bed studio that ran off of a USB battery, and that gives an idea of the Deluge workflow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcIqAFW8cFQ
