If the production version looks like the prototype version I'm going to have to convince my wife she needs a new Miata because that car is gorgeous.

I am thinking about buying a (already drivable, no projects) Miata in SoCal, manual is the only option I'm aware is definitely 'Must Have' (and it needs to be smog-ready or already certified) but I'm also relatively new to this search, any suggestions on things I should watch out for/specific models to look for primarily?

Budget is $3-6k with the hopes of keeping it at the lower end of that but with some flex for the right car...

That red one is super clean and practically brand new looking. I craigslist-emailed that seller to see if it was still available, but haven't heard back. (I won't steal your car kimcicle if you're trying to actually buy it!) Red is probably not exactly what I want, and I'm sort of torn on the 'museum condition' situation as I already have one car I care about and don't need to add to that end of the fleet.

Is there any way to tell from the badging/model name/etc whether it's a 1.6 or a 1.8? I still need to go sit in an NA and see if I actually fit at 6'1, 220. 34" inseam, I don't think I have an overly long torso, but I've heard these cars have got more legroom than headroom and I'm relatively broad in the shoulders. Here's what I look like sitting as low as possible in a 2018 M3's seat:

Regarding whether I'm okay with "slow" or "really slow" - I grew up driving Volvo 240's, and now have a E92 M3 so... I don't know that I'd honestly be able to tell the difference between 1.6 and 1.8 speeds (or feel that 1.8 is anything less than 'really slow' anyway).

This one looks somewhat interesting to me (an admitted very novice miata looker) for what I'm thinking of using it for, but there's not a ton of info in the ad and I haven't heard back from the seller yet on this one either. https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cto/d/1992-mazda-miata-68k-miles-5/6556826974.html

Update: I fit in it, that's s a tiny dent (no rust anywhere) no other dings but a little scuff under the right parking light, a small crack in the front valence paint, and I bought the car. $3800 out the door.

Thanks, I'm somewhat amazed to have stumbled onto it with such little effort, not having a succession of 17 year old idiots 'improving it' for the last decade and a half is great and the seller was super cool/honest and it was one of the easiest purchases ever as well. My '92 NA's drat AGM battery (which is less than a year old) has suddenly started not keeping a charge/wanting to even try to start the car. I'm tempted to get a quick-release positive terminal and disconnect it when I'm not actively using the car (it gets driven less than once a week in the winter)... I know AGMs are generally more finicky, but is this a relatively common problem for NA's or is my wintertime underuse the key problem here?

Ether Frenzy
Dec 22, 2006

Nap Ghost
Yeah, sorry to leave that fact out, I did that, and driving it for half an hour will charge up enough juice to start the car right after the drive, but then 2-3 days later it's unwilling to even click, it's so dead. I am wondering if maybe it's just a faulty battery that I should get warrantied before the year runs out because I can't think of anything on the car that'd be pulling any power while it's sitting, it has literally no features, and I can't imagine that SoCal winter temps are variant enough to murder a relatively unused battery in a year.

Luckily I have a couple $50 chinese battery start packs, it's been a pain in the balls to start on its own for a couple weeks now and getting worse but those things are godsends.

I am in Sweden and would like to keep prices around 6-8 k USD. Around here that gets me a really nice well maintained stock-ish NB with 40-70k miles, or barely into an early NC.

Purpose and goal with the car is to keep it pretty much stock (have owned and modded many vehicles but these days I just want to drive them), just use it for some fun driving when the weather is nice. No track driving of interest.

I have an E92 M3 with a DCT and a '92 NA standard Miata with zero options and 13" wheels, both are completely stock and they are a great pair of fun vehicles that are totally different. The Miata is quicker than most cars up to about 35-45 due to how light it is, and that's good enough in town for the most part for it to be entertaining. Squeezing through 4' gaps to make right turns is great, but I'm constantly aware how tiny the car is compared to most modern US cars and I know which one I'd rather be in if someone decides to run into me.

The biggest thing I keep in mind is to not try the corners at the same speed the BMW goes around them... and also, wear sunscreen.

Actual Miata Thread question: I'm about to install a solar power trickle charger (I live in SoCal) for the Miata and it sits outside/away from a power outlet and hasn't been getting much use the last couple months/isn't my daily by any stretch - my research so far seems to indicate that the cigarette lighters in these are not 'hot' outside of the ACC/on position, is that correct? Which means I'll have to run the alligator clamps through to the trunk, is the cutout/whatever on the passenger side behind the seat?

Well your name is Voltage so I should probably listen to you...

but I already got this one - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07X2WP5B7 on a recommendation from the general chat thread - don't you need to disconnect the solar panel before starting the car? (That's what the instructions on this one indicate), or do you just unplug the cable and put it in the trunk when you're using the car?

This one came with a variety of plug options, the easiest is to just stick it in the cigarette lighter but if that turns off with the car then it isn't going to work, and the panel also came with a set of alligator clips to attach to the battery terminals which is likely how I'll end up running it, I suppose I could snake it out the door and into the trunk but sitting outside in LA who knows what idiot's gonna mess with that, so I will attempt to jam it through the rear trunk wall without drilling any holes if possible, I've just never looked behind either seat/removed the carpeting to see what's up back there.

I'm currently watching the little indicator charge bulb as it sits in my west-facing window as the day goes on to see just how direct the sunlight needs to be. (not as directed as I expected so far, but it drops when I take it away from the window even to a sunny patch in the house.)

Yeah, if you're buying a new car at a old timey dealership, let them talk you into the cheaper price to finance it and then just pay the entirety of the loan on the 2nd payment (or whatever the first chance you get is. Check that it's something you can do quickly before signing.) Did that when we last bought a new car and it feels good.

Hey folks! Been slowly thinking about trading in my Corolla for something more interesting/fun to drive, and the Miata is definitely in the running. Before I go out and start test driving, I was wondering, how feasible would it be to stick a digital piano in the passenger seat? I rarely have to do any transporting of larger items, but as a musician I do occasionally need to bring my 88-key piano around. Dimensions are 50.6″ x 10.2″ x 6.3″ (not including soft case which is very thin and shouldn't add much). Anyone tried to do this before? I imagine it shouldn't be a problem with top down, but what about top up? I'll probably just end up going to a dealer anyway to check for myself, but figured I'd ask in case anyone has concrete experience with something similar.

You could probably fit that AND a tiny pianist into the passenger seat on any Miata.

Here's an subjective comparison, but it has the older Miata numbers.

I think it's just tuning on the suspension, but the Fiat has a smaller turbo'd engine which produces more torque, which might actually feel faster on the road during normal driving/commuting unless you're absolutely going to wring the Miata out as the heritage on them is to have a more peppy & lively naturally aspirated motor. Fiat also weighs a tiny bit more but who knows if that's noticeable between the two since people weigh different amounts too.

I have a little tiny puddle of moisture in my NA's trunk, as far as I can tell there's no reason it would have formed a leak/no sign there's a problem with the trunk gasket seal on that side of the trunk (although we have had a lot of rain/damp conditions for a couple weeks), and the battery looks like a cold beer can left sitting out on a hot humid day. :what:

Been hurling it into corners and it seems quite happy. Waiting for it to dry up before I really press it.

Joe Mama posted:

If you're still using stock springs or slightly stiffer, FM bars would be good for street/occasional track. My NB had FM bars on it when I bought it and they worked just fine, very universal. I'm actually using them now on the Volkzda and they work fantastic because of the added weight of the body and glass up high, especially in the rear. If you want to go more performance oriented the general consensus is to use a bigger front bar and stock rear.

Thanks friends, always nice to get some real life experience/feedback on these changes since I've definitely gone the route of "whoops now it's a race car and sucks on the street" in cars I've "upgraded" in my younger days, and after some time of driving actually good cars instead of "upgraded" shitboxes and getting older I'm no longer really that interested in a rougher suspension than what an E92 M3 will give you on the softest setting.
