Viperix posted:Well, just picked this up Monday: l o v e i t I just bought my first Miata too at the end of Feb, and was super tempted to buy a leftover 2019 GT RF exactly like this one. That color looks amazing in the sunlight. I would have had to trade in my still-practically-new 2017 6MT Mazda6 to reasonably justify it though, and since I knew I'd end up regretting losing that, I settled for a CPO 2016 GT in pearl white and kept them both. Don't sweat learning to drive a manual. I did nearly the exact same thing. When I was 20, I got a five-speed Cobalt having never driven a stick before. My boyfriend drove it home for me, gave me a crash course on driving stick in a parking lot, and planned to let me use his car until I was comfortable with it. The next morning, I was getting ready to leave for work in his car when I thought, "Well, let me see if I can get the Cobalt around the block...." "Okay, that went fine, let me see how I do to the end of the street...." ....and then just kept going until I got to work. Other than stalling twice, that was all it took.

Now that I’m 100% WFH I’d been hemming and hawing about selling my Mazda6 that I no longer need (it’s a 2017 Touring, with a six-speed manual, so it’s a bit of a unicorn and I was terrified I’d regret selling it) but last weekend I got a wild hair up my rear end and traded in both it and my ND1 (that I’ve owned only a year, they gave me more than I paid for it on trade-in lmao) and upgraded to a ND2 RF. It feels so bougie and frivolous, but man it makes me smile every time I look at it

pr0craztinazn posted:Congrats! Do you find the various improvements from the ND1 to be noticeable? A ND2 RF in the same Deep Crystal Blue like yours is on my list of vehicles to consolidate into by selling my NA and Fiesta ST. Thanks! I had my heart set on the Deep Crystal Blue since my 6 was the same color. It’s a pain in the rear end to keep looking good, but when it’s clean, it’s gorgeous. And yeah, the extra power makes a huge difference between the ND1 and ND2. I don’t really notice the LSD vs the open diff I had before, to be honest, but I’m also not tracking either vehicle. A lot of the QoL improvements are nice, especially the wireless CarPlay. I miss being able to just toss back the top in a couple seconds, but the RF is definitely quieter, and rear visibility is surprisingly better with the top up, too.

Sidesaddle Cavalry posted:I'm probably just preaching to the choir here with the question, but I need to make sure it's a serious option for the kind of car I'm looking for: I have a 2021 ND RF and I actually went through the same thing going back and forth about whether I could DD a Miata. Before I bought it back in March, I had a 2016 ND and a (manual) 2017 Mazda6. I had initially bought that first Miata as a second car since I, like you, was concerned about the practicality. Surprisingly I didn’t find that I needed the extra space with the 6 all that much. Even grocery shopping for myself and my husband is totally doable with just the Miata. In a way, it’s nicer since the trunk is smaller so stuff doesn’t roll around as much. So, I traded them both in on my new RF and I have no regrets. That said, I always go for a stick over an auto if there’s an option, but if I had to go back to a larger car, I would seriously consider the turbo AWD Mazda3. Some disclaimers: I live in the mid-Atlantic and I work remote 50/50 and live less than 3 miles from my office when I do have to go in, and I do also have an old Mazda extended cab B3000, but I really only have to use it if I need to bring my greyhound somewhere. pastor of muppets fucked around with this message at 14:29 on Sep 11, 2021 |

Some little poo poo wrote “HI” on the hood of my car in the dirt* which is a good enough reason to wash and wax it top to bottom I guess *I am not convinced it wasn’t my husband, even though he denies it

Keeping this particular color looking good is very tough, but that was true for my Mazda6 in the same color, so I knew what I was getting into. Looks awesome when it's clean, looks terrible when it's not. I never had any quality problems with the paint on my 6 though and I owned that for four years, so Im hoping my Miata will be the same. I've seen folks either in this thread or the other Mazda thread complain about Soul Red being extremely fragile while others claim to have had no issues, so yeah, there seems like there's a lot of QA variance.

My 2016 was snowflake pearl white and had a few chips in the rear bumper where I'm pretty sure the PO backed into a bush or something. Also, one on the interior passenger door sill panel (which drove me nuts like how did that even happen ?) Front bumper was flawless oddly enough. I had the dealer touch up the chips in the rear before I took it home.

Yeah, AA/CarPlay became standard and wireless AA/CarPlay available in the GT trim, but that’s about the only change between 2020 and 2021 you’ll care about. Otherwise they just shuffled around the interior and exterior options and replaced Eternal Blue with Deep Crystal Blue.

I’ve owned both a soft top and an RF ND. Road noise is noticeably louder in the soft top versus the RF, but with audio books, I only really needed to decrease the bass/increase the treble to get spoken voice to cut through. I wouldn’t let that stop you from test driving one and trying it yourself!

I know exactly when you mean. I haven’t ridden nearly as much since COVID began; it just always seems like an unnecessarily risky activity to be doing while the hospitals are so overtaxed right now. But jumping in the Miata and just farting around on some back roads is an easy dopamine delivery method. Not to mention I can just go do it instead of having to gear up and be in the right headspace to get on the bike. Buying a Miata in March 2020 was the best decision I’ve made in the last decade. Hands down. Edit to add that I do still have my bike and will go out if conditions are perfect, but the Miata is a much better balance of stupid + practical. Even mundane errands like grocery store runs turn into stupid little adventures. pastor of muppets fucked around with this message at 04:55 on Dec 30, 2021 |

That's strange, it automatically connects to CarPlay ~95% of the time when I start the car (pretty sure my iPhone has a faulty Bluetooth module so sometimes it just drops connections). I would think it would default to the last input for AA, too.

Ngl as a 5’4” woman I feel pretty vindicated about being able to fit perfectly in my ND after being told for years that I “just need to get over it ” by motodudes when I would say that there are many bikes that I will never feel comfortable riding due to their seat height/weight distribution/overall short person-unfriendly geometry this isn’t meant to be a dig at anyone in this thread

I live in a relatively nice neighborhood in my city that nonetheless gets a lot of foot traffic and car break-ins happen all of the time. Like, at least once a week there is someone within a block or two or me posting on Nextdoor about how their car got rifled through. I make a point of keeping nothing even remotely enticing in my car but it was definitely a factor in deciding to trade in my soft top ND1 for an ND2 RF.

Nice! How long did it take to claybar the whole thing? Was thinking about trying that out next time I do a hand wash. Like you, I agonize over the fact that it will look filthy again like half a second later and won’t be worth the effort.

I’ve had both a soft top and an RF ND. With the top down, the soft too definitely has better visibility, but actually, the rear window is much smaller than on the RF so backing into a spot was way harder with the top up. My soft top was a 2016 too so didn’t even have the lovely backup camera. Mazda in general seems to cut corners on backup cameras for some reason. I’ve had three Mazdas of recent vintage and they all had worse cameras than the Toyotas, Hondas and even Fords of recent years that I’ve driven. pastor of muppets fucked around with this message at 23:57 on Apr 6, 2023 |

Yeah, I’ve have both a soft top and an RF ND. I do miss being able to just throw the top down in a few seconds, and honestly I end not putting the top down as much as I did with my soft top one. Part of that is the speed, but part of it too is paranoia about causing too much wear on the RF motors, so I only end up putting the top down if I’m going to be driving around for more than 20 minutes or so (which is rare for me). That said, I don’t regret switching to the RF. The wind noise is noticeably quieter, visibility is about the same/better (with the top up), and I just think it looks loving sick.

So in personal Miata-related news I came out to my car a few days ago and found the driver door ajar and a fully loaded Glock clip on my seat. That was fun. i don’t own a gun

I did, they came and collected it. They were also as “wtf” as I was. My guess is that it was someone coming around checking door handles, mine was prob unlocked so they got in and rifled around, found zero poo poo of value, got out and dropped the clip without noticing. I would bet they had already hit other cars before mine and the clip was stolen from someone else’s.

I’m biased because I’ve owned two different NDs but I also vote for the ND1 over the NC2/3. That said all Miatas are good Miatas so you really can’t go wrong. Someone in the Miatas in Prediccs FB group (one of you?) posted this one spotted in the wild. Hard to tell but the top and seats are red. Almost makes me wish I still had my white one. Almost.

Yeah, I’ve had both versions of the ND: one soft top and one RF. The RF is definitely quieter in my experience. I’m also short though at 5’4”, so maybe ride position makes a difference.
