My initial and optimistic reaction: Oh sweet, we're gonna get new BOTAR songs.
*Five seconds pass*
My cynical and pessimistic reaction: After waiting another three years, we got a BOTAR re-recording of Keasby Nights.

You were at the last AMR Fest? You should have said something on here. AMR15 is the first place I got to hang out with lessthankyle. Which is a thing that people should definitely do, because he's awesome. AMR20 was pretty cool too, I just love Mike Park and everything he does.

I wasn't at the ASOB reunion, but I was at the farewell show at the Knitting Factory. Which the internet informs me was 10 years ago. Holy poo poo. No idea if I'll be able to go, but I did get my Keasby Night tickets.

Before my office decided to block all streaming media, I spent a lot of time trawling bandcamp for new ska related releases. The album I found last year that I enjoyed the most was this: https://sorrysweetheart.bandcamp.com/album/86d-from-everything. Kind of in the vein of Kill Lincoln. Anyone have any other under the radar releases from last year that have stood out?

And the head brewer at said brewery used to play in No On 15, the ska punk band I saw all the time in college, and I'll be sure to continue to annoy him about a reunion show! Looks like I'll be at the Black Cat a couple times over the next few months, Kill Lincoln is playing there in April and Mad Caddies never come this way. Dirty Rice is a fantastic album, does anyone know how much new stuff vs. old stuff they play nowadays? Not that it really matters, I love every album they've made, just curious.

I saw the Mad Caddies the last time they were in Philly, which seemed recent, but apparently was 4 years ago. It was right after dirty rice came out, and I remember their set being a pretty good mix of old and new. Maybe a couple more songs off duck and cover, and few, if any, off of keep it going, but a bunch off dirty rice. I recall being pretty happy with the set list.

My vote for best album this year is Talco - And the winner isn't... They're an Italian band, with some really insane horn lines.
Video: https://youtu.be/s3S-ZTz2AgU
Album: https://youtu.be/ZKkW6itA6rY

In other non-English ska news, a new Ska-P album just dropped but I haven't listened to it yet. I don't know why, but I wanted to dislike the Interrupters, but this album won me over.

Finally, Losing Streak > Borders > Rockview. They're all tightly bunched, but yeah.

Yeah, he's right, and I don't understand what's so bad about saying essentially "younger kids are more likely to latch onto a newer, younger ska band as a gateway into ska". Anecdotally, I saw The English Beat when I was somewhere around 19. At that time, Dave Wakeling was about as old as the guys in the Slackers are now. And like Mike said, they were great, and I had a good time, but I was never going to latch onto them the way I did with Less Than Jake or Reel Big Fish who were maybe 8-10 years older than me.

Which, speaking of Mike Park, I'm sure most of you have seen that he teamed up with Mike from Kill Lincoln to put out a new Ska Against Racism comp: https://badtimerecords.bandcamp.com/album/ska-against-racism. It's great, I've been listening to it almost non-stop since it came out.

The other thing that's looping with that comp is the new Devon Kay and the Solutions album: https://devonkayandthesolutions.bandcamp.com/album/limited-joy. It's not exactly ska, but it's got some really strong Hippos vibes, especially the sound of the keyboard and horns. It's like Heads Are Gonna Roll crossed with Defiance Ohio's Midwestern Minutes.

It's kind of in line with that Brooklyn Vegan article, but I really think this has been an amazing year for music so far, somehow in spite of everything else being a disaster. I've used Bandcamp for a couple of years, but the Bandcamp Friday's have really pushed me to use it even more. If anyone else uses it, I'd love to see your profiles to search for more new poo poo. Mine is (huge surprise): https://bandcamp.com/wafflezombie

That Brooklyn Vegan article is great, so much music I didn't even realize was being made. It's a bit of a firehose, though, even with their playlist that highlights their top picks. Any real standouts that I should check out?

I didn't discover Kill Lincoln from that article -- that was probably this thread -- but I really like them. I don't only listen to ska-punk, although I think that makes up a lot of the current renaissance of the genre.

My best friend likes a lot of this stuff too, but usually only hears about newer stuff from me. He read the article and basically said the same thing - it is a little too long and he got annoyed at it. It probably could have used some editing. But here are a couple of the standouts in my personal opinion, with the caveat that I'm assuming in addition to Kill Lincoln, you know We Are the Union since they've been around a while in relation to most of the bands in the article and that you'e heard the newer Bruce Lee Band stuff because both Jeff Rosenstock and Mike Park are the best.

Sorry Sweetheart - Not in the article, but in their Spotify playlist. But I'll start with them because I really like these guys - imagine Kill Lincoln, but a little bit more metal screaming. I don't even like metal, but it works. They've only got 2 EPs, but they're both great. My favorite song is probably the first track off this one: https://sorrysweetheart.bandcamp.com/album/86d-from-everything

Call Me Malcolm - I need to check out most of the UK bands they listed, but these guys are really good. The album they just put out this year is good, but the one they put out 2 years ago is great.
Easily the best album closer I've heard in a while, with some truly epic "whoooa"s at the end.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIGXf8-bArM

Omnigone - The aforementioned new band from a couple of Link 80 guys with help from a lot of other great people. The album is all over the place stylistically, from ska-punk to more hardcore, but it's all really good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiFI4InRTYQ

No Such Noise - They only got a name check in the article, but they're local to me, and I like 'em. They were kind of inactive for a while, before contributing a song to The Shape of Ska Punk to Come, and it seemed like they were gearing up to do more, but pandemic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gec6cZbRYEU

Half Past Two - They're from Orange County, and I'm not trying to be snarky here because I mean this in the best way, but their sound fits right in with what that would lead you to expect. A lot of positive factors for me: female led, keyboard, great covers, and my three year old loves both of these so I have an excuse to listen to them regularly:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuyIQc-Oarg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wHTXWuqnp8

Hey Smith - From Japan, and the article nails that they do that thing that I seem to hear in a lot of Japanese bands where songs just completely change their sounds in a beat. Just listen to this first track and get psyched: https://asianmanrecords.bandcamp.com/album/life-in-the-sun

Catbite - If you haven't heard them yet, I don't really know how to easily describe them, other than "they're in a similar vein to the Pomps" (side recommendation, check out the Pomps https://thepomps.bandcamp.com/album/top-of-the-pomps). Which might not help, but they go with "power-pop ska", I think. They're a four piece - guitar, bass, keyboards, drums. The guitar player is from the Snails and the drummer is from Last Martyrs of a Lost Cause (look, I live near Philly so this is relevant information to me, at least). The lead singer and the guitar player are married, and when quarantine hit, they put together a bunch of acoustic covers, including one from Kill Lincoln (https://www.facebook.com/164468024245095/videos/748479765683376) which manages the neat trick of being both a good acoustic cover and a version that also makes me appreciate the original even more.

Hey, it's bandcamp Friday. Any albums from last year that I might have missed?

Some I'd like to highlight:

Behind Deadlines - Farew
I really loved these guys, but they dropped a surprise EP along with the break-up notice to soothe the sting a little bit. Philly has an okay scene, but it seems impossible to have more than 2 ongoing bands at once.
https://behinddeadlines.bandcamp.com/album/farew

Codename: Rocky - Blueprints
They changed singers and guitarists, but didn't change their sound very much. More punk with horns, than ska I guess, but I just love their sound.
https://wiretaprecords.bandcamp.com/album/blueprint

And not ska at all, but probably relevant to people reading this thread due to the Impossibles and Animal Chin connections, I was really surprised to stumble across a new album by The Stereo:

I was just thinking of posting something about these guys. They've been in regular rotation for me since this dropped. I've seen a few interviews where they basically wanted to start out as two-tone band but picked up some other influences as they put things together.

The Pomps are great! It's press copy from a 2016 e-mail, but I've always loved this description because it sums them up perfectly: "In 2011, Alex Stern recognized a problem of his own creation: He was in a reggae band that was firmly committed to writing within its genre, but, his songs were grounded in a fascination with late 70’s Power-Pop and New Wave. He was simultaneously in a New Wave band that objected to his insistence on a singularly Jamaican syncopation. He formed The Pomps with an ear towards an amalgam of the 2 styles, and a hope that it would be a solution." As a fun side note to that, I saw in an interview with Tim from Catbite where he commented/joked that he wanted to hear more bands sound like the Pomps...so he started Catbite.

I hadn't really given the Abruptors a listen before, but that new album is great. I've listened to it a lot in the past week.

The other new release that I've been listening to a lot is from The Collywobbles. They're an Italian ska-punk band, with a full horn line, a keyboard, and dueling male/female vocals. Here's the lead track off the new album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dh0Y5nVx2s

And my favorite off their previous album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNUzTiLhn_E

How did I hear about them, you ask? They posted this video in a ska group on Facebook:

Lord knows what prompted an Italian ska band to cover the Bloodhound Gang.

Freefall Felix! I've been meaning to post about them in here for a moment! There's a guy, Andy B, who traveled around to record a whole bunch of other musicians for a project he called Andy B and The World. I liked this song in particular:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpD4oG9kCTo
I can't put my finger on why, but it really reminded me of Freefall Felix. Enough that I thought, "Hey, was anyone from that band involved in the song?" Short answer: No, I don't think so. But thanks to Felix, the stuntman that did a freefall from space, the band is really difficult to search for. After fiddling around with search terms, I actually got a few relevant results, and one of the first ten results or so was the OP of this thread. I can't replicate it now, but I definitely laughed that the band was obscure enough at this point that a post from this thread was a top result. But I feel that was definitely a thing in the 2003-2010 era - bands moving towards that heavier rock with horns sound and releasing a great album or EP, then just disappearing like these two bands.

In other ska news, Catbite and Brian Fallon covered the Slackers, but also made it goth?

Is that vinyl all re-records or just a couple of tracks? I saw LTJ last week and saw the vinyl at the merch table, but I already have that album over three or four different pressings so I didn't wait in line to check it out or anything.

It's a double album, and I think the first disc is just the album, but this is the list on the other disc:
C1 Metalheads '23
C2 Motto (demo)
C3 Big Crash (demo)
C4 Honest Answers (demo)
C5 History Of A Boring Town (demo)
D1 Boring Town '23
D2 Last One Out of Liberty City (Live)
D3 Them Song for H Street (Live)
D4 Nervous In The Alley (Live)
D5 All My Best Friends Are Metalheads (Live)
D6 I Think I Love You

Boring Town sounds fine, but that Metalheads recording is terrible. The horns sound awwwful. The other thing of note is the demo for Honest Answers, as I don't think that's ever been heard. It's a very rough demo, but it's cool and you can see it fitting in on the album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh4aq0bBbT0

On a related note, I've actually been to two ska shows this month! The Bad Time Records tour (Catbite, WATU, Kill Lincoln, and Bad Operation) and Devon Kay and the Solutions. Less Than Jake sold out before I could get a ticket, and the BTR tour sold out it's 650 person venue in Philly. Outside of Streetlight, that's easily the biggest ska show I've seen where all the bands formed this century.

I'm really excited for this, the new song sounds great. I really like how they keep iterating on their sound - we're not getting the same album over and over, but there's no huge shifts, and you can clearly see the the slight evolutions from In Black and White to Can't Contain It to this.

loving hell, Greg Lee from Hepcat died. Had a brain aneurysm and cardiac arrest on Sunday, he was only 53. The worst loving news.

Yeah, I woke up to that news and it really sucks. I just have so many memories tied up with Hepcat. They were the first "real" show that I went to with my friends, at the Trocadero in Philly in 1998. When I got married, even knowing that she hates most of the music I listen to, my wife gave me free rein to pick any 3 songs for the playlist, and Dance Wid Me was one of them.

The other time I got to see them was an odd experience - I used to travel a lot for work, and I sometimes managed to line trips up with concerts. So I ended up at the Knitting Factory in Spokane, WA to see Hepcat open for Flogging Molly, with a then-unknown Fitz and the Tantrums as the first band. In a very large crowd, I was one of maybe 8 people that cared about Hepcat in a tiny dance area near the stage and that was just a surreal feeling.

Of course, I put Right On Time on in the car while driving my 7 year old to karate tonight, and he immediately jumped to "I don't like this song" when The Secret came on. Get some taste, kid - that's an amazing song. (I joke, because my poor children have absorbed some of my musical tastes - they constantly ask me to play the first three songs on the new Mustard Plug album)

RIP Greg, thanks for all the music and memories.

RBF was just Aaron by the end, but the trumpet player had been around since Cheer Up! Or with Less Than Jake, JR isn't an original member, but he's been in the band so long, is there a difference? Especially with the size of most ska bands, it's a very Ship of Theseus question.
