Based on these bands, you might have more luck with bands the recent trend of American post-black metal. Stuff like Agalloch, Krallice, or Liturgy. Possibly some recent Slavic bands like Drudkh or Negură Bunget.

Yeah, also Deafheaven, Ash Borer, Alda (maybe?), Oskoreien (I rec them all the time I know but nnng so GOOD), er is Agalloch too obvious?, I'll always recommend Altar of Plagues to WITTR fans, Skagos, Nhor, Waldgeflüster...

Morbid Florist - thanks for posting Satanika. I liked. :)

I didn't realise that Petrychor had a side project. Ambient dark/black, I like what I have heard so far.

I've really got into them recently, their new album took a while to sink in, but I'm really enjoying it now. Where would you recommend going next with them?

My personal favourite Lunar Aurora album is Andacht. If you like that style of black metal (which I know you do, having watched Endstille with you last Friday!), also definitely try out Geïst (album: Galeere), and Dark Fortress (Eidolon), assuming you don't know either band. Run, don't walk - they're killer albums.

I recently got into Deathspell Omega, and I like how dense the sound is and chaotic but with an underlying structure.

Are there any similar bands with that "wall of sound" style?

The Ruins of Beverast, maybe. Blut Aus Nord are also French and also chaotic/avant-garde BM - I always bracket them with DsO. And they're more on the ambient side, but I think maybe Darkspace might float your boat (try Dark Space 3.0, one of my favourite albums of all time.)

The debut album was a boring turd, but this time around they apparently decided to copy Emperor instead of Drudkh and it paid off, it's a good album

I really like the first album, but can't get excited about the second at all, and I still pretty much agree with what you say here.

(Cross-post from the metal thread)

Via a recommendation from Kim Kelly, I've recently fallen for Anicon. Just the one EP at the moment, from what I can tell, and they're so new they don't even have a metal-archives entry.

The EP will be released later today.

For black metal fans - kind of WITTR-ish, a bit more up-tempo, great atmosphere.

Hey London people, Absu are playing tomorrow in a pub in north London somewhere. http://www.last.fm/event/3500757+Absu+at+Boston+Music+Room+on+1+March+2013

Also, I'm working my way through the BM (and doom) tracks on this list, and enjoying them. New Aosoth! New Imperium Dekadenz! http://stereogum.com/1267571/the-black-market-the-month-in-metal-february-2013/top-stories/

It's super goofy, man.

I don't think a lot of people realize that the front-man of Deafheaven is being just as theatrical as most black metal musicians are on stage. He's just conveying his own intensity and in his own way sans-corpse make up, spikes and what not.

I was having a chat on Twitter about Deafheaven, and mentioned how short-changed I'd felt when I'd paid £11 (or so) to see them, and they only played a 30-minute set. The lead singer jumped in and apologised and I felt bad for moaning, even though it was justified. My Deafheaven story y'all.

Haha, I listen to all of those bands, except Skagos, Fell Voices, and Alda. I'll be checking them out soon though. I kind of thought that it was becoming a bigger thing, but I didn't realize it was starting to organize and come together. That is awesome. I'll be looking through that last.fm tag too. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

In this vein, I really like Addaura too.

Vanitas was my favourite album of last year. Heads up, Londoners - Nathrakh is headlining one of the Candlefest days in August.

Being friends with Mick Kenney on Facebook is ace, too, as it means I get a steady stream of photos of Mick Kenney in my timeline. Mmm. Mick Kenney. ;-*

Speaking of cosmic black metal, I got all excited when I stumbled across this Swiss band, Moonfrost, while paging through the Omega Mail Order's current sale. Thought they were gonna be another Darkspace.

Speaking of Darkspace, I recently found Alrakis who are helping me cope until Dark Space IV is released.

Incoming shameless plug: I wrote a piece on the new book "Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult" by Dayal Patterson:

Spoiler alert: The book is quite good and worth getting if you're at all interested in the genre.

Good to hear. Dayal is a cool guy and he's been working incredibly drat hard on that book. I will get a copy asap - still annoyed it came out after I finished my MA (did my dissertation on BM and masculinity and yes I know I am everything that is wrong with the scene) as it would have been p useful, I think. :)

I was at the Mgla gig with nomapple and have to disagree on Svartidaudi - they really didn't do it for me. Muddy and samey. Also had to leave halfway through Mgla due to massively late running of the gig. Incredibly annoyed as I'd really been looking forward to it. HOW did it take hours to get in to a venue above a pub?! The door staff were checking people's rolling tobacco packets, I mean what. (Yes I am old and grumpy.)

Has anyone seen Shining live? How were they?

Sometimes Kvarforth is dead drunk and the show is awful, with sloppy playing and no energy. Sometimes he's only quite drunk and angry as hell and they are amazing. It's always a bit of a crapshoot. The new members they have are very talented live, though, which helps.

When they're good, they're very very good; when they're bad they're awful.

Anyway, Intet-Altet by Orm is easily my AOTY. Four tracks, hour and a half, perfect.
