I found an XJ for sale and I'm curious to hear you guys thoughts. It's a 92, automatic, 4x4, with the 4 litre 6 in it. Pretty high mileage at 185K. How are those things in the long run, I've read up a bit on them and from what I can tell they are moderately bullet proof. Any particular quirks I should know or basically a solid design? I guess it is also worth asking if I should just run screaming?

Welp the loving 92 sold. I found some 99s for sale, same 4 litre, 4x4, automatic. Any differences I should be aware of, or am I best of poking around until more early 90s models turn up?

Welp, no Jeep for me today- went to look at that 99 I've been eyeballing, turns out the freeze-plugs between the engine and tranny are leaking. This isn't a deal breaker but they would NOT budge on the price. loving 3 grand for a 240K mile vehicle with leaking freeze plugs and ZERO options beyond the automatic is not a loving good price. The search continues.

Hey guys! I bought an XJ! 1999 with 110,000 miles on it. It's a 4.0 with the Selec-Track transfer case and a 4 speed automatic. It's a PA Jeep so the underbody is pretty rusted, but I put it on a lift before buying it and poked and prodded and stabbed things with a big screwdriver and nothing is rusted through, just bolt heads and annoying poo poo like that. All in all it seems pretty solid.

It has a few problems though: I have a bad sag-rear end problem from the springs being worn out, cruise control doesn't work (hell, the little light doesn't even come on) , it makes me shift into neutral to start it sometimes... odd accessory lights burnt out here and there, but otherwise the thing seems ship-shape.

I want to upgrade my suspension , I figure that will replace my worn out springs and a lot of the rusted poo poo underneath that's bugging me. I'm going to do those truck-Lite LEDs, and maybe 30inch A/Ts on its loving super sweet factory option alloy spoke wheels.

I don't know what I don't know - is there anything I need to check or replace? I did the usual "old car" checklist - u-joints all seem ok, no important poo poo rusted through, good temp, oil pressure sender is bad, but it idles great (and Carfax has the thing being serviced every 3-5K since it was new) so I suspect oil pressure is fine (new sender on the way). No weird noises, no weird vibrations. Anything I forgot?

For fun there is a super sweet looking off-road park an hour away in Bridgeport http://www.cityofbridgeport.net/322/Northwest-OHV-Park and I kind of want to drive over and try the machine out in all it's stock glory. My concern is that fully stock it might not do much more than drive around dirt roads - which is fun, but not worth a 2 hour trip and 25 bucks. Also I don't have any off-road friends so if anything goes wrong - something breaks or I manage to go up something I shouldn't (read "get ambitious") and get stuck I am well and truly hosed.

Thoughts or suggestions?

I drove a lot of off-road years and years ago. Back in High-school I drove a FJ-40 for a couple years, then a Scout 800B for a few years after that. Took them lots of places I shouldn't - but I haven't gone off-roading in 15 years, so I think I'll wait until I have some company. I've only owned the Jeep a week and I'm not completely comfortable with its reliability yet. Plus I need to hunt down the gremlin preventing my cruise from working, replace a couple hoses, go find some bulbs to replace in places... I got poo poo to do.

Maybe I'll make some nice friends locally that want to go out here later this spring.

I've been trying to track down a cloud clunk/clatter I get whenever the front suspension compresses - it sounds just like when I forgot to put in my upper shock bushing, except all that's tight and good. One loud CLACK if I hit a single bump/pothole at 15+ , moderate rattling if I'm on a washboarded road. Sound is definitely driver's side. I didn't have any luck finding it today, but in the process of jacking things up/bench-pressing the block/doing frenzied pullups on the front suspension bits I discovered my steering box mount was loose about three turns on all three bolts so I'm glad I found that! Tightened it up and thought that would fix it but the sound is still there. All the damned bushings are original 1988 rubber so who knows...

Good buy, the 1999s are a good year. Dunno what your budget is/what you want to use it for, but if you're replacing sagged-out suspension you might want to buy a complete ~3" lift kit and just do it all. That'll fit 31s easy (you might want some good wheel spacers on the stock backspacing) without cutting bodywork and add a ton of capability to the offroad side of things. The oil pressure sensor is a common failure point and easy to replace - I don't know if the 99s had the option for an idiot light or an actual gauge, but on mine there are two different sensors so you want to make sure you get the right one . I'd suggest draining and filling the transfer case fluid because that's generally neglected on street XJs.

Thanks! I'm hoping to do maybe 3 or 4 grand all in. I have been eyeballing that MetalCloak setup (3.5 inch lift), seems real popular but the guys on WranglerTJForum say it's mostly marketing and while being a fine kit, it's not the end-all be-all people are talking it up to be. So I might just go old man emu 2 inch lift off that DPG site(it's about 700 bucks cheaper). They all come with quick disconnects which I don't want/need, but who knows? I'm still new to this. I think a 30 inch A/T is about as big as I can do on my stock wheels, and I love my stock wheels, so I'll probably just lift it enough to clear those and call it good a couple years while I figure out what I /really/ want to do with the thing.
I've ben watching a lot of videos on the youtubes and rock crawling doesn't look that great to me ... so I'm thinking just general dirt/mud/sand bounce around, find some rocks and explore kind of ... buffoonery might be right for me.
Todays agenda is to go find a Bluetooth enabled stereo receiver for it, I've been driving the last ten years with the ability to tie my phone into my car for calls and music, turns out that's really hard to let go of.

EDIT: And done. I had them put in JVC headunit with the Bluetooth, Inifinity speakers, and a little Alpine 10 inch. They also hard wired my dashcam to the the accessory circuit and replaced all the interior lights with some drat bright LEDs. Mission accomplished!

Hey guys! Quick question. I have (another) coolant leak in my XJ, seems to be coming from one of the two heater hoses running to the heater core there along the left side of the block. That's just regular heater hose, right? I need to get some of it and redo those.

I finally found my mystery leak. loving heater core. It was cool this morning so on my way out I cranked the heat. What greeted me besides refreshing freakishly hot Jeep heater air? loving coolant stench. I'm thinking definitely a core leak. While I am at it I am going to replace the A/C evaporator because I doubt my buddy (who's garage use I am generously being given access to) want me in there constantly.

Question - rock auto has like 4 brands of heater core and like 4 brands of A/C evaporator. Any stinkers or honorable mentions? Worth ponying up the cash for OEM brand poo poo(oh god, please no)?

I'm thinking while I have the interior apart for this I am also going to do the JCR anti-wobble console mount, figure .. might as well since I'll have to pull the thing out anyway.

Anything else I should look at while the interior is apart?

edit: condenser? pffft - evaporator.

Good new, everyone! Operation "Replace all that hosed up poo poo under the Jeep" is officially funded and go!

Problem - BearTrax recommends a Rusty's 3 inch lift setup. I don't know jack about Rusty's but the internet seems to hate them. The internet is also prone to unjustified outrage and blowing things out of proportion so .. any of you guys have firsthand experience with the stuff? I might go MC but MC recommends a SYE and on my NP242 that's big big money.

So basically I want to do expedition - light rocking, light sand/mud.

Thinking Option 1: 3inch Rusty's with a 1 inch transfer case drop and (part of a package .. 75 a tire is a steal) 31X10.5 Fun Country tires. I don't especially want/need new tires but that's a loving great price, save me 100-120 bucks a tire when I do replace them next year.

Option 2 : Metal Cloak 3.5 inch lift. Webpage says I need a SYE with it though, any reason I can't go with a freaking 1 inch transfer case drop on that as well?

Option 3: ?????? I basically want to run maybe 31s (seems to be good tire selection at 31) with my stock fenders. Possibly 32s .. but I don't see much of an advantage. I'll eventually lock my diffs and armor up but for now my springs are shot to poo poo, control arm bushings are shot to poo poo... I need to get that stuff out of there. So thinking just a lift for now.

Just do the SYE.

My only concern with the SYE is that I'm having to have this poo poo installed. I am an apartment dweller these days and I just don't have the facilities to do the lift myself. If my complex catches me with the truck on jacks they'll hit me with a lease violation. I'll do the odd thing here and there in defiance but having my truck down for a solid day or two is pushing it even for me.

That said, the labor for lift is quoted at 7 hours and 3-4 more hours for the SYE. That's 110 an hour on labor so it really adds up. The good news is they do really good work, so I am happy about that but you know.... big big money.

I hate to say it, but I think I'm going to go with the Rusty's lift and the set of Fun Country 31s it is package with. The price is really good and I'm not going to trail it very hard- I just really really need to get out from under my hosed springs.

And gently caress it. I'm just going to put some BillSteins and a set of factory replacement springs under the XJ. Here is my thinking. I thought the XJ cames with a 29 inch tire. The XJ came wit ha 27 inch tire (just a hair over) and a 3.55 rear end. If I want to go to a 31 then I am changing my gearing requirements from a 3.55 to a 4.10 otherwise I'm doing like 1800-1900 RPM down the highway and I'm not even real sure when my torque converter locks up. So instead of going up a couple of inches its actually a LOT.

So new thinking.... according to my maths if I just replace everything stock and put a set of better shocks on (the shocks are just... need shocks) I should still be able to fit 235 75s under it which are a hair under 29 inches tall. This should fit. The will only change my revolutions per mile about 3% and generally work out much simpler in the long run.. no SWY, no trackbars, none of that bullshit.
I can't any kits in stock spring size so I'm going to get the leafs from quadratec and a set of poly bushings to go in them, call it good. haven't figured out the coils yet.

This seems smart to me. Thoughts?

So I have a fun problem. 99 XJ - 4 litre, blah blah.

I lost my fan clutch bearing. Which is a discontinued part.

Previous to catastrophic failure I got one of those NSK 885586 bearings the guys on NAJAX speak so well of. Had intended to go find someone with a press to use and get that fixed. Wasn't punctual enough.

Now freaking nobody will work on it. Which is great and all but no water pump, no alternator. Anyone have experience with a short belt to bypass the mechanical fan? I'd risk driving it on the single electrical long enough to get it to a press if I had a water pump turning.

From what I've read, people have tried and it sometimes works. Evidently it's a very tight fit and trying to hammer it is a great way to screw up your bearing. Not impossible, but not a great idea. As it stands I limped the Jeep back to my place, so it's safely parked and can wait for a better solution which I'm kind of debating between finding a short belt, bypassing the mechanical fan entirely and just switching it to electric fans permanently - or finding someone willing to press it in.

Update on my XJ and the awesome grenaded fan bearing.

I never could find a mechanic willing to work on it so I called my old man, bugged him for a hand. We trailered it out to my family's shop. We got a press and all that good stuff.

Pressing out the old bearing was easy, except the flange that the fan mounts to had been kind of ... friction welded to the bearing shaft by the old bearings as they exited the building. So that flange is pretty hosed, but, meh, it's a Jeep - fan still bolts to it, it'll be fine. Just took a while to get it worked off the shaft, even with a 12 ton press. Aside from that, super easy. Everything else slid right apart and pressed together pretty much how you'd expect them to.

Results! My MPG was up over 1 MPG (About 1.2-1.3) on the drive back to my place, a CEL for emissions equipment went out, the hatch light switch (which has NEVER worked) started working, and my subwoofer is getting power again.

All from changing out a bearing.

I love my Jeep.

The worst part is the noise. It handles fine at 75 although even the slightest of hill will destroy momentum. I feel that I've regained some power after dropping from an average 6500 feet down to more like 4500 feet this afternoon, so it is handling hills better.

That's kind of how mine is. I judge if a vehicle "likes" going high speed or revs or whatever by how quickly it sheds speed or RPM or whatever whenever I go to neutral inputs on my controls. The Jeep will power on up to 80-85 in a ...reasonable? amount of time. But then it's really loud from wind, the steering is not terribly precise at those speeds and the second I back off of the gas even a little it starts shedding speed like crazy. So I figure it doesn't like it much. 55? Oh man, it loves 55. It gets great mileage (relatively) and will just happily motor along at 55 all day long with no drama at all.

Then my Volvo c30 I had, it loved going ton up. Freaking every time I'd look at the speedo that thing would be trying to do a buck twenty. It just loved it. I eventually just started calling it "Volvo Speed"

Also - hows your trip going?

Anyone have a thought on this? I'm getting CEL for EGR valve/solenoid or my charcoal canister. a second light for my fuel vapor detection pump.

So I replaced both valve/solenoid and vapor leak pump. I had to wait a while, but light is back on, new EGR valve/solenoid just ticks away constantly and now when I take my gas cap off there's a rather disturbing release of pressure.

The only thing I can guess is the charcoal canister is plugged ... for some reason?

Anyone have any experience with this? It's some weird poo poo.

It's been parked for over a year, no problem when I parked it.

Now when I connect the battery (brand new, charged) the running lights kick on and the engine will crank then turn off, then everything shuts off - then lights come on, engine cranks. In a a loop.
