I’m in the UK. Just passed my car driving test.

So then I went to the BMW showroom in Stirling and test drove the 2021 330e petrol electric hybrid. Loved it.

How’s the 530e driving wise? Does it feel as good?

I’m 36. Insuring the car won’t be an issue.

Bit too big, the 530e then? Hmmm. Will have a test ride and a think.

The 5-series is in a weird no man's land, no? Bigger than a sporty sedan needs to be (3-series), not nearly as luxe as a 7-series, which is not a whole lot bigger. Why not do the 330e?

I’ll likely go for the 330e. Was just thinking the rear passenger comfort in the 5 might be worth it. Might.

The 530 is slow and wallowy and not all that nice inside unless you tick all the boxes. Reminds me of an old Pontiac. But maybe that's your thing.

If you want something even remotely engaging to drive and a BMW badge, you want a 3er. If you want something comfortable and competent and German and very numb you want an Audi.
5: Slow, wallowy, yeah, this is swaying me towards the 3.

I definitely do not want an Audi. Their looks don't do it for me.

I'm in the UK, and yes the eStang does look very good, but I think a hybrid is more for me at the moment because while I want electric for short journeys, but petrol for if I need to get down to London from Scotland. And I like BMWs in general!

Which year did BMW start offering the Parking Assistant that not only parallel parks for you, but can park into narrow spaces (either forward or backward) in parking lots between two cars on either side of you?

The XM is looking to be a good fast car, just very stupid looking on the outside re the hard angled body and triangular exhausts. The grill is not as stupid as this exaggeration though:

BMW 525D 2007:

"Left dipped headlight failure" for the last few weeks.
Googled which bulb to get.
Not sure which bulb.
Watched youtubes on how it's done.
Parked car in my garage, opened the bonnet, got the plastic cover off, decided undoing the rest of the assembly looked too finicky.
Put the plastic cover back on.
Phoned local garage.
"yeah bring it in, I'm free in an hours time".
Brought it in.
Mechanic fixed the bulb in 5 minutes.
Total cost (bulb + labour): £10.

Way better than DIY.

My E60 525D's steering felt a tiny bit off for the last few days, but generally fine.

Drove today to the local town centre 10 miles away. Parked up fine.

Went to shops, came back, started up car, half way home and power steering goes.

No warning or error lights though, before or during the power steering failure (which is still ongoing).

Turning the car off and on again did nothing.

Had to drive back about 7 miles without power steering.

I've booked it in for the local garage to take a look at 1130 tomorrow morning.

Any thoughts on why no error lights and what the power steering failure issue could be?

There will be a dipstick under the cap or markings on the inside to indicate fill level, typically 1/2 to 2/3 of the reservoir volume.

If the power assistance is totally gone, the thing might be totally empty. Ie you're looking for a big problem, not just "a little low on fluid "

Will check for dipstick/markings.

Power assistance is 100% gone, i.e. I was properly heaving at it at points, particularly for 90 degree turns at low speeds.

BlackMK4 posted:

Buy the real Pentosin fluid and when you take the cap off it has a dipstick, it has a min and high line marked.

Mechanic took one look at it:
"belt tensioner is broken, belt is chewed up as well. Will order the parts today, replace that belt and the tensioner, and another belt that's looking a bit off. Should have it ready for you Friday or Saturday".

Heating fan also started to limp (blowing wasn't as quick or as hot as it was earlier) on the way to the mechanic, which he said should also be one of the belts that need replacing. I told him that's fine.

Well the air conditioning has been poo poo since the get go (no cold air), but the fan behind it worked fine.
Now the fan behind it is barely blowing.

Well, lets see if he fixes the blowing of the hot air to blow harder and the power steering to power steer.

If he doesn't fix the steering, I'll be pissed. The heat, well, I can take it to a specialist at some point.

My understanding of the problems is "power steering don't work, air conditioner blows no cold air, blower for hot/cold air now blows not as hard as it used to yesterday.". I.e. I know gently caress all.

Sorted.

£381.

Belts replaced, belt tensioner replaced.

Power steering now works, heater's fan now blows full power. The latter was belt related (as was the former).

Taxi'd me from and to the garage too. A+.

I took my 2007 525D into BMW Aberdeen yesterday to get the safety recall wiring thing fixed, specifically had it booked two weeks ago and provided them a scan of my driving license in advance so I could be sure that everything was squared away for the courtesy car that they’d have booked for me.

I get there and the lad there says that’s fine, I’ll be getting to drive home a 530D as a courtesy car for the day as they get it fixed. Could he see my license please? Sure.

“Uhhhh how long have you had this license?”
“Car six months, bike 1.5 years”
“Yeah our insurance won’t let you have a courtesy car without at least a year of driving experience”
“You couldn’t have told me that when I emailed my license in weeks ago?”
“I’m so sorry.”
“Can I take home a courtesy bike”
“It’s out”
“I drove an hour to get here, don’t make me go back without fixing the issue”
“How about we collect it two weeks from now in the morning and bring it back in the evening?”
“Ok. Can I test drive the i4 and test ride the r18 while I’m here, and as discussed with your colleagues weeks ago?”
“Head on over to sales and they’ll help you”

Test drive trip report; I’ll post it shortly.

BMW i4 M50 Test Drive:

Drove it in Aberdeen and on the A96 to Inverness for almost an hour. It was easy to drive and had a lot of punch, enough that flooring it out of a roundabout or on the bypass to the motorway properly pushed me into the back of the seat. Felt fine in the few corners I did. Had enough range, it was on about 80% battery when I left, showing 195 miles in Comfort mode. I put it in Sport mode quickly afterwards.

  • Seats were super comfortable. You can turn on the heated seats by talking to the car. This one didn't have massage seats, even though I tried "Hey BMW, turn on the seat massage" "I'm sorry, that function isn't available".
  • Heated steering wheel was nice and toasty.
  • It will adjust the air conditioning for you when you ask it. "Hey BMW, can you make it colder" "Yes, I've reduced the temperature by 4 degrees."
  • The view out the back isn't great, the rear window is a bit small.
  • The Sport mode "spaceship" noise instead of an engine noise, that they had Hanz Zimmer compose for it is fine enough. Wish it sounded like an ICE though!
  • Parking assistant is basically magic. Click the button, click the parking space you want to park in, and that's it, it does it all for you magically. You don't have to touch anything, neither the brake, nor the steering wheel, nothing. Absolutely glorious. It got me into the tightest possible city parking space without breaking a sweat. Absolutely love that feature.
  • Looks like a normal BMW (avec big kidney grill).
  • Ride quality was absolutely fine, I was very comfortable in there, didn't feel it was too stiff or anything.

I live in the middle of nowhere. It's absurdly unpopulated, and I'm surrounded by barley fields.

I leave my 2007 525D unlocked but with the doors closed of course, windows up, and boot shut.

Twice now, in a month, I have noticed that the boot of the car is open several hours or half a day after I've been out. There is no way I left it open.

Could wind trigger the finger switch/sensor under the boot lip to open the boot? It's definitely not a person opening it, nothing's been taken, nor moved around.

This morning I woke up with it open and it slightly damp inside the boot because some rain got in. Sigh. I've closed it, will blow it with warm air from my motorcycle dryer later to dry it out. Locked the car too this time, so that the boot stays shut.

Our Wagon would do the same thing with the glass lid, it would pop itself, even when driving.
The switch got corrosion it in, so it would think that the button was being pressed. I disconnected the switch for a while, and then bought a new one to replace it.
Of course, instead of being able to switch it, the old part was jammed in the glass and I couldn't get it out without risking the glass. I was able to get into there with contact cleaner and it fixed the issue

You could try that, or get a new switch.

Thank you, this is good info.

If it ever becomes an issue while driving, I'll get the switch replaced.

For now, I've only noticed it happening while parked. I'm leaving it locked now, which resolves the issue of it opening while parked.

Dipped left headlight failure for 2 days.
Bulb out? Yes. It's out.
Take it to mechanic yesterday morning.
Mechanic: Um it's working.
Me: What, it was moaning at me last night!
Mechanic: We have a saying here, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Me: Ugh, I don't want it to give me that stupid warning again.
Mechanic: We can replace the bulb if you like.
Me: Yes, lets.

£10, worth it to potentially not get annoyed by that warning / lose 1 dipped headlight randomly.
