ok the dealer is never gonna give you poo poo like that for free, because why would the parts department give you something for free when the sales guy hosed up?

the dealership is like four distinct silos: new vehicle, used vehicle, service, and parts. they all hate each other and they all depend on each other in a macro sense. they're all compensated on department based gross margin and so therefore if my department does a solid for you for the good of the customer it comes out of my pocket. gently caress you, says the parts manager, don't lose the keycard next time.

that sales guy doesn't give one gently caress about your post sale experience because he's already sized you up and figures you won't come in again in three years. yeah you might but you're a goon posting on the forums buying a demo so I doubt you change cars like socks. maybe i'm wrong but people don't buy cars every 2-3 years unless they're leasing (and if you're not leasing and you're buying every 2-3 years you're making a bad choice). And anyway, even if you come in in three years, he ain't gonna be there. the odds that that salesman is at that store in three years are maybe 10%. Every second he spends thinking about you or your problem is time spent where he isn't making money or doing a thing where he could be making money in the future. Even if he absolutely blows you away from a customer experience standpoint, you're not gonna tell your friends and family to see Amir at the BMW store. And even if you somehow did, the odds that they actually go see Amir at the BMW store are very, very long, and the odds that they buy a car from him are so long that they're basically zero.

note that i'm not saying this is good or whatever, its just how it is. it sucks and is super annoying! but everyone's acting according to his incentives.

edit: have you, or anyone else, ever bought more than one car from the same sales guy? I'm genuinely curious now. I think my father in law does but he changes leased BMWs every like 18 months so he's a Special Child in that regard.

I’ve gotten what five, six BMWs from the same dealer. First two from the OG dude and the rest from the guy who took over. This is over a 22 year period. No other local dealer here can compare. This is in SoCal, land of BMW dealers on every other street corner.

Getting a great deal on a BMW is now easy for me given the relationship I’ve built with that dealer. I keep trying to look closer and nobody will play ball.

I was at my local yesterday for the recall software update. Two M3s in the showroom. $15k dealer markup on each, and all the tacky added on accessories, too. gently caress that poo poo.

I even asked the guy when I was there looking like, ok what happens if I start asking for a lower price, do you have some goons in the back escort me out?

He didn't really have an answer, simply stating they will not budge on any price... what the gently caress?

I can't imagine that goes over very well with the clients aside from the bad with money types that just assume the dealer is being 100% honest and up front, which as Kyoon has just pointed out they are doing everything in their power to be the complete opposite at all times

I’ve seen that as well. I’ve always shopped the deal I get from Greg to as many other dealers as possible, and only the CCA guy in Santa Barbara would come close. Yes, I could in theory save a few hundred bucks someplace but I haven’t figured out how to actually do that. The no haggle pricing only works when the entire brand adopts it.

In other news, I went to my local indy coffee place and when I got out of the car someone getting into theirs next to me said “that sounds like a beast” and it’s the first nice thing someone said to me or my car in a long time.

Im half way into the lease and at less than 10k miles. I need to go on some drives.

Did the Ultimate Driving Event in LA today. The half day car handling clinic deal, M3/M4.
Three different stations, hard braking practice (at different speeds, straight and turning), emergency lane change/obstacle avoidance, and a short autox course (this was with the M4, the others were M3s).

Hot as balls, but a fun event. The braking practice was pretty easy, good to get used to the cars. I did that first. You always know that speed leads to longer braking times, but doing it back to back in a repeated way really hits it home. Did that first.

The lance change thing was fun (I did it last, wish I did it before the autox). Started at 30 and ramped to 60/65 (if they let you). My first attempt at 60 I took out a whole line of cones, got some good coaching and absolutely nailed my last run at 65. Happens real fast speed, basically full throttle, lift off and turn the wheel as fast as you can around and back and hard on the brakes.

The autoX, that was both fun and a learning experience. Two practice runs and two timed runs. Swap drivers between each. My first timed run (basically 1 3/4 laps) he didn’t remind me to hit the stop box until I was turning past it. Oops. Got good coaching through my second practice run. Third practice run put up the fourth fastest time of the day (I’m a big goon, the three fastest guys were all a foot shorter than me and less than half my mass, don’t judge). Then things got spicy. The other driver who I was swapping with came off her first time run. As she’s opening the door and talking to the coach, now I didn’t catch all of it but it was something like, “you know when you are masturbating and you are coming really hard and you just keep going and you don’t want it to stop, it was kind of like that I love this car, no really like when you are masturbating you know what I’m talking about right.” Yeah, 20 something platinum blond from Beverly Hills meets middle aged midwestern driving instructor. His brain just about fell out of his head. The M4s did have the carbon buckets with the crotch bump, so maybe it hit that nice gal in all the right places.

So I go for my final lap, the instructor is beet red and was basically ‘you know what you did wrong last time, you got a half second in the first corner and full one in the second you can make up good luck’ and yeah, I ate some cone on that run. I pull back in and he said ‘I told you what to do, but you know you could just do that instead.’ But I definitely learned a lot about car handling and staying focused today.

I’ve not done this specific event before. Did an early version of the BMW event at Thermal before the facility was complete. Ultimate drive a few times, with different configurations of events. A few Porsche events and a corvette one at Fonatana speedway (that one was excellent! C7 launch event.) doesn’t take much for me to go burn up someone else’s gas and tires.

Totally owning my being a dork today, but figured someone might enjoy the write up.

The previous gen ACC from BMW was not great, especially the lane keeping bit. The newer stuff is really good, and the graphics that show what the system sees is basically a copycat of the Tesla style view. Kia/Hyundai/Genesis LKAS is still better, but now by a slim margin.

The hands off traffic assist is great if you live in a place with traffic as well. Again, newer gen much improved over the older one.

Ultimate Mango
Jan 18, 2005

As much as part of me will miss the M5, I’m stupidly happy with the iX M60. Definitely heavy but it really does feel like the future of BMW and I really like it. And hands down the best car audio system I’ve ever heard. And I had a brother who spent a decade doing custom car stereos back when such a thing was fashionable.

The stuff like ‘My Modes’ that sound super cheesy on paper are actually kind of fun. Relax mode turns on seat massaging and soothing colors and noises and when you step on the throttle it sounds like a choir of angels singing. It is entirely surreal. To try once. Then never touch it again probably. Yes, I’m contradicting myself on the internet. Sue me.
Weird to wrap my head around the fact that stop and go traffic is more efficient than SoCal highway speeds, and at least the sort of self driving stuff is great in traffic.

I’m also lucky enough that my local utility paid for my 48amp home charger, and install. And there are other groups giving out rebates so I’ll literally make hundreds of dollars just for getting a home L2 charger. Charging at home so far is a revelation. And the whole preconditioning thing is great. Tell the car when you want to be ready to leave and the battery and cabin are at the temp you want, ready to unplug and hit the road. Range so far is a zero concern. Not sure if I’ll take it for a week in Big Bear full of people and stuff, for a car with an ‘official’ rating of <300 miles it looks like reality is 330-350.

As for driving. It’s different, coming from an M5. But it’s nice. Hard to decouple the driving part from the rest of the experience since it is so totally quiet and comfortable. It feels heavy, and the brake pedal feel takes some getting used to, and it certainly does not stop like the M5. But being able to slam 5 people’s heads into the headrest at any speed in a literal instant will never not be fun. Feels planted and connected to the road while the air ride smooths everything out. Whereas the M5 was like, “you want 9/10s on this freeway cloverleaf, good luck trying to find it before you soil yourself, boy racer” and iX is like “woah woah, let’s not try to rewrite newtonian physics when changing directions or stopping, but rewrite the rules of time and space in a forward direction as you wish but know that my safety systems cannot react faster than you can rear end the car in front of you”.

Happy to answer questions or feel free to offer a diagnosis as to what kind of psychosis I have based on all these words. But yes, I’m the eye dee ten tee who turned their M5 into an iX.
