How did you JUST tell me about this thread tonight? Honestly.... Its been going on since 2008!?!? How did i miss this? Im so sorry.

Anyway, Id like to disagree just a little here.

Overused- Yes those named above but also, Deadmau5- Ghosts, New Order- Blue Monday, Avicii- Levels. I'll quote Adrian directly ""Barbra Streisand" by Duck Sauce" is the "Blue Monday" of the new decade. Hell, so is Avicii's "Levels," come to think of it."

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/737785/Blue%20Level%20Babs%20(AplusD%20Made%20Me%20Do%20It%20Mash).mp3

And underused..... sigh, the thing is, there are good ways to mashup with EDM stuff, but EVERYBODY just reuses the same stuff over and over again. If I hear another DeadMau5 mashup Im going to scream. And I like Avicii's stuff, but people seriously need to stop using Levels and bring in his other stuff. Two of my favorite mashups in the last few months have used Penguin. And thats ignoring the Leona Lewis track which is also awesome and I think should totally count as a mashup.

Im going to say the best underused stuff would be pop songs from the 60s. There was a great Monkees mashups tonight that made me realize how little we hear stuff from the Beatles.

Ill read the whole thread when Im not recovering from a night at Bootie SF. But for now, I'll say that if you like mashups and want to hear more amazing stuff, here are the guys to check out:

He's got some insight in his Rolling Stone interview

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/iggy-azalea-taylor-swift-dj-earworm-mash-up-united-state-pop-2014-20141203

Look at 2009, it's built on Ive Got a Feeling. Which yes, is a horrible awful song but also crazy catchy (like say, Party Rock Anthem). So it's easy to build off it. There wasn't much this year.

Seriously, name the popular dance-y top songs from this year. Timber and Shake it Off. Anything else? Not much to work with.

Earworm has always struck me as still being in that old mashup school of thought. Where the lyrics need to flow as well as the music. And he sacrifices a lot sometimes to stick with that. It makes him VERY hit or miss. When he's bad, he's forgeable. When he's good, it's platinum. That being said every time Ive heard him play "live" its been amazing. But playing a club and making tracks are totally different things.

Skouteris and Mashup Germany have had the most consistent year end recaps recently.

I really dont like the Pop Danthology style of mashup that is not a coherent piece from start to end. Danthology is a review of the music from the last year. With some mashup-y bits. But it's not a complete piece of music from start to finish. More like a medley.
I know it is just personal preference. It's why I've never been a fan of Girl Talk.

But then, I am a total mashup hipster who complains about how there's rarely any good mashups these days, forever spoiled because when I first got into the scene, using stuff like Journey was brand new and amazing. The nostalgia for DJs like Earworm, Lobsterdust, and (of course) AplusD will always make me love them, no matter the quality of recent releases.

16 days till Im back at Bootie SF. Can't come fast enough.

minato posted:

It must be hard to get something coherent and audibly-pleasing when you're trying to cram all the tracks together simultaneously. It might work better as a medley, where there's only a couple of tracks audible at a time.

Collision Course was my first exposure, as I think it was for a lot of people. I'm not embarrassed at all, there is some good stuff on that album.

Then the first United State of Pop.

Then Im sure there were some other things after that. I was still in college and wasn't really paying attention to music. But as soon as I moved to the SF bay area, it all came flooding at me. Hard to remember the first big thing I heard there, but the one that sticks in my mind is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLC8ndUbMKI

I'm sure there were many before that.

I really characterize things as Before Bootie or After Bootie. The BB stuff has got to be mostly collision course and earworm. AB is a deluge of amazingness.

Yeah Im pretty sure the first time I heard that Strokes vs Christina mashup was when Smash Up Derby played it.

Does anybody have any recs for longer mixes? Like around 10 minutes or so of random stuff?

Ive started running again and find I run best with ADD mashup style music. Though not quite as ADD as girltalk. More like DjsFromMars Alien Selections or the recent Pop Love year end mashes. So stuff thats a bit more of a medley, with the tracks changing somewhat often, but not non-stop.

Doesn't need to be recent. Just up-tempo (dare I say "high octaine") and with lyrics.

Great background music while I'm working. Thoroughly enjoyable and very well executed.

But very little that I found really great. Anything that did hit home was never developed well.

However, I've never really appreciated artists who have a lot of stuff all in quick succession. Like girl talk. Or hood Internet. Probably because the last 8+ years of my mashup fandom had been centered around Bootie, which doesn't really play that sort of stuff. So I've been conditioned to like full mashups.

I always end up so frustrated when there is some genius combination but it only lasts like 10-15 seconds. I want the whole thing!!!

The problem is 9/10 times "the whole thing" doesn't work as well as the 15 second clip. I used to be really into this kind of stuff but it did get stale pretty fast. Have you heard any 2ManyDJs mixes? Some really good stuff there.

But then I want to hear that 15 second clip more than once in the mashup.

Have the mashup have like 6 songs and explore from there. I think this is why i like Earworm so much better than the more ADD artists/producers. His tracks with many many songs will return to the same theme as needed. There's a chorus.

I just cant get into tracks that are just one short clip after another without any unifying theme or song. Part of the reason USOP 2009 works *so well* is because it has the black eyed peas underneath it the whole time. Really ties the song together
