Good, I was just coming here to post this. Go listen to Power Hour, vote for your top 10, and be happy.

I haven’t enjoyed a block of mash-ups like this in a loooong time. Reminds me of like 10+ years ago when things were really cranking.

drat I miss MUYB. Don’t have time to comb through like I used to, so Bootie Top 10s it is.

I had 8 that were sure fire then 20 more that were good too. He should probably make the album then a B side or something, cover the top 20-30, at least.

Track 36 was the only one I marked definitely not. Alabama was a sure hit, assuming it stays that well matched. Honestly I would’ve been fine with some A+B mashups of some of the stuff in there (and a bit more if it works well), but I could’ve done without, say, the weekend included in track 3. But I totally get the formula and sticking with what works.

You gotta stick with Bootie if for no other reason than they’re the only ones that I know of still releasing regular best-of compilations. That’s why I miss MUYB so much. All the other sites that were sort of hubs for that stuff are long gone.

Some of the EOY megamashes are worth waiting for (Skouteris has taken the crown from Earworm, IMO) but there’s also a ton that aren’t so great. I’d really prefer to get more EOY best-of packs, honestly.

And I also want to download those 2 friends mixes for my long drives :( fuckin SoundCloud

Is there any special way to go about it? I’m not too familiar with actually using SoundCloud with an account but it seems they suck about downloads. I’m on my phone right now, maybe that makes a difference?

E: God, I remember chopping up old Loo & Placido NRJ megamixes to have individual tracks. Still have the tracks but I think the mixes were eaten somewhere along the way.

I mean that one is clear, but which is the one you'd axe?

All I wrote down was the track numbers because I was at work and I’m not there right now. I think it was the one with Dolly Parton. The more country mash-ups didn’t do much for me.

ugh, that was pretty bad

i guess i dont really care for any of these mashups if they are 99% composed of bubblegum pop

To be fair, what did you expect from a yearly pop review? Some others may bring in more genres, but Skouteris is pretty constant on that genre/theme.

I think I like PopLove 3 best, honestly I haven’t ever heard 90%+ of the songs on this year’s so maybe my exposure fatigue is less.

I always take megamixes as 1) an exercise in technical ability (in this Skouteris and Panos T are excellent) and 2) a bit of social commentary, I guess, about how similar all pop is (and thus easily mashed). That’s not to say I don’t enjoy plenty of simple A+Bs, but I don’t usually keep many of these EoY mixes. Rather have compilations of individual tracks from the year.

Somehow, I like it more than the others as a complete mix, kinda keeps the same energy/tone throughout, if that makes any sense. Sharp video editing too.

It’s not so much a matter of what might be missed, moreso what fits. Part of the whole gig is making new stuff with old stuff that wasn’t mind-blowing. The fit is too spot on to ignore, IMO.

I wouldn’t mind seeing that Louis Armstrong bit developed more. There was another spot or two but I’m too old and don’t know many of the artists anymore. There are some in the older mixes I would’ve liked as full tracks too.

Sometimes I feel like they sample along too much, I get trying to show off, etc. but maybe I’m just getting old and like to develop a groove a bit more.

I still can’t get into BB 16. 15 has really grown on me though, so it might yet have a chance.

I just dumped about 250 new (to me) mashups on my phone to start listening. Nothing blowing me away yet but a few solid tracks from the past few months. Reckon it’s about time to break out the Holiday playlist, haven’t bothered in years.

There are still many of the older producers making stuff but you have to seek them out individually, and I don’t have time/patience for that these days, especially using mobile data. I always used the bootie best-ofs as a basket to listen through and keep a track or two. Losing MOYB was a huge loss though for sure.

It’s not necessarily saying that, after all, mashups are in some ways a sort of meta-commentary about how pop music is all the same. It’s more saying that a lot of the creativity where people went outside the genre and created really unique stuff is gone. Now it’s more “A+B top pop tracks lolz” which can be entertaining, but it lacks something.

Wait, GT started releasing stuff after 2007? Is that correct? Cuz that’s not anywhere near OG, Bootie and lots of others were around in the early 2000s. I don’t know the earliest MUYB, but even GYBO was around before that, I think.

Like I would consider Party Ben, A+D, DJ John, DJ Schmolli (Maybe Mash-Up Germany?) and that group as the first ones I remember. Oh and the Kleptones were the early giants (A Night at the Hip Hopera in ‘04), and of course things like the Gray Album (‘04). DJ BC was running Mash Ave in Boston in ‘04 and continues to produce. Loo & Placido were in there a little later, I think? But their NRG mixes from France were pretty great, as I recall.

I may have to jump down the rabbit hole of the earliest stuff I have to see when all that was (had to look up a bunch of this).

Edit: oh and GHP since 2002, proper OG.

Haha poo poo, I just browsed back in my library a bit and I keep saying “oh poo poo, yeah!” Lots of producers from way back (that’s as clear as the chronology is in my head, anyway).
