Why is A Christmas Carol remade so much? I love the versions that try new stuff, like Micky's (my favorite version), Muppet (which kicked off their run of 3-4 great movies like Treasure Island), and Scrooged. But it seems every year there's a new Dtv or made for tv version that's slavishly faithful to the book. Do they actually make money? If I feel like watching a pure adaptation, the 50's version is still regarded as the best by many critics, though Patrick Stewart's is fine too (he did make a great Ahab). I'd love for someone to make a version where one of those 3 kings (or all of em) from the nativity story were Scrooge-like until that night. I just realized Groundhog Day is almost the same story too, so Bill Murray made this story twice.

Mescal posted:So for audio clarity and editing reasons, there's often voice over or dubbing of lines in movies. (Not sure what it's called in the industry.) I almost never watch a movie without noticing this, and I can't stand it. It breaks immersion for me way more than unbelievable scenarios and unrealistic dialog. If we have the technology to make CGI so good that most people notice it, I assume we have the tech to edit audio better than this. Yeah I always notice the ADR in Star Wars, especially because the volume changes quite a bit. You'd think with all the digital fuckery Lucas has done to the visuals, he'd at least fix the volumes. One easy to spot scene is on the Falcon after they rescue the princess and she's talking to them in the cockpit.

Neither Bruce nor Selina appear to be badly hurt at this point. Penguin reveals his master plan and kidnaps Max Shreck. Bruce and Selina go their separate ways.

I remember seeing a movie around 2000 or so where a guy was shot in the kneecap and it blew apart and he fell to the ground, what movie was it? Also, is that the most painful thing you can do to someone? In Django he mentioned at the end that the house "negro" hadn't mentioned it as punishment.

Also I just re-watched Django Unchained, what was with the girl with the red scarf across her face. I imdb'd the movie and apparently that was a stunt actress Quentin liked, is that the only reason? My question: in Mr Holland's Opus, is the son deaf because he played music over the womb, or just random chance? Or some god's idea of punishing/testing the dad?

There's no way you could improve the thing, it's like some kind of optical illusion where you keep looking at it and it keeps on getting better and better, by which I mean unsettling and off-putting. The blackness of the house. The family receding into darkness toward the audience. The only light being the blasted wasteland into which Ethan wanders listlessly. The way he favours his arm. And that's not even taking into account all of the narrative poo poo. It's just a loving astonishing bit of filmmaking. It is so loving good. I was referring to the scene right before that, when Wayne is runnin after the girl and you think he might shoot her like he swore to earlier, and the boy will have to shoot Wayne to save the girl, but then Wayne doesn't shoot her because (?) forced hollywood happy ending.

These disabilities can be physical, emotional, or cognitive, but the disability/the character(s) with said disability should be the main focus of the film. I can think of a few obvious ones like Children of a Lesser God, Rain Man, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Miracle Worker, Freaks, Murderball (we're watching this in class so it's off limits), and The King's Speech, but I'm looking for some recommendations from CineD folks. My prof wants us to cover as much time as possible, so the films I choose cannot have release dates within 5 years of another film. Older films are definitely preferred, since I can mostly think of newer ones. Also, the films do NOT have to be particularly kind to or accepting of people with disabilities. The point of the assignment is to get some idea of the history of society's views toward disabled people through the lens of film, so any sort of portrayal is fine. Son of Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein. (Burgonmeister - physical, Ygor - physical, Monster - mental). Good for comparisons between the 2 as well since the base of the characters is the same, but produced ~60 years apart so they're viewed differently.
