Has there been any good implementations of modeling or sculpting using commercial vr headsets? I heard blender supports it? Are they the only ones?

blender only supports viewing a scene in VR, no modeling or placement or anything else

For anyone learning Blender, the blender guru guy is kind of a shithead. This thread lists a lot of non-shitheads to learn from

more of a theoretical question than practical, are there best practices for distributing a 3d model via something like cgtrader or turbosquid? like should models be combined into as few separate meshes as possible, or divided on a per-material basis, should meshes always be triangulated, should curves always be converted to meshes, is it worth it to include materials.

Houdini question, is there any simple and non-mathy way of animating a ramp attribute so that it repeats over $time?

Edit : Basically I'm trying to figure out how to do the animated spring effect in the tweet here : https://twitter.com/PaulEsteves28/status/1382303308103221253?s=20

how much math is too much math? '%' is the modulo operator, so to repeat something over x seconds you can use $T%x. to scale that to 0-1 just divide by x, or
code:
($T%x)/x

I'm still working on the fundamentals of Blender. In this example, say I want to take the default 2Mx2M cube and make one face 1M wide. If I switch to edit mode and select that face, I only see "median" as an option in the (N) transform menu. It seems I can't directly input dimensions. As a workaround, I would create a 1M cube, move it over on the X axis, then turn on snap to edges, select the edges of the default square, lock them to the Y axis, and move them to the edges on the 1M square as shown in the attached image. Is there a more efficient way to do this?

you can input relative dimensions, so make the cube, select the face in edit mode and hit s (scale), y (only on y axis), .5 (.5 width)

People working on a tablet monitor, what are your tips for arm strain? I was noodling at a model for a couple of hours and I'm really feeling it this morning. I have a small non-display pen tablet that I might try instead as I used the monitor primarily for illustration, but it would be a shame to shelve it.

Does anyone here do cg stuff as a contractor, like incorporated into training videos or marketing materials? How would you charge time spent rendering out a scene? Per minute of delivered footage, based on render farm prices, same as normal hourly rate, electricity prices, or something else? Or is it just negligible compared to all the other time spent on a scene?

Was the half cylinder just under the surface there or something? You could try booleaning it with a full cylinder instead

When you’re in ortho view in blender by default there is a number in the top left that tells you the minor grid scale. It will say something like 10 Centimeters or Feet depending on your units

So this is making the rounds at work today

https://openai.com/sora#capabilities

The artists under 30 I work with are saying this means we all won't have jobs in 5 years. Maybe I'm delusional or maybe I'm just jaded by so many cycles of tech hype (i worked with a lot of bitcoin bros at my first job and the bosses at my third studio were NFT hypers) but this reminds me of the amazing papers at Siggraph every year. Looks super cool! When can I expect it to become part of any workflow? ... *crickets*

Anyyyway, I'm sure it will further degrade the stock video market. And also make the general public assume that vfx work is all done by computers.

lol watch the legs and hands of the walking woman in the first sample
