I won an auction for an old Bridgeport Mill.

The price was right, so I bid on it sight unseen. It was in use until very recently. I'm pretty stoked. They also had a much nicer Index mill, but I didn't have the space for it.

Yeah, it was listed as working, so I hope so too.

it's okay, how expensive could a set of spindle bearings be anyway?

I paid the scrap price for it, basically

The "Reason" category has the "Not Needed" box marked, so hopefully they're just clearing out older equipment. Or, they may not need it anymore because it's all hosed up. You never know with how most people tag poo poo.

Yeah, I just came back to the thread to post this. Lol

I’m going to go up and take a look at it on Monday. I’ve got to get re-certified on forklifts before I pick it up. The plant guys won’t load it, since it’s not theirs anymore. I’m going to do an online renewal class at Forklift University. FU, lol

I’m curious to hear about this machine and what you can glean from the serial numbers.

Off the top of my head a vertically split round ram belongs to the earliest machines made we know as a ’bridgeport’, but, as best I can tell, it’s wearing a variable speed j head.

That thing’s got some stories. I hope for your sake they’re mostly about a fastidious tool maker in a prototype shop.

I got it home, and I'm working on getting it cleaned up and wired. The serial number on the base of the machine is 427, made in 1940. It had a more modern 2J head put on it at some time in its service. The head is from the mid 60's, I think. Something came loose in the head when I was running it down to its lowest speed as suggested in the H&W Machine videos on Youtube. I ordered the top end rebuild kit for it, and I'm going to work on getting that rebuilt next week, once I get home from work out of town. It only has about 6 thou backlash in the hand wheels, and seems really tight and clean. I am guessing that it got rebuilt at some point and then only made one cut for it's whole career at the plant I got it from. So it has very little wear, all thing considered.

Edit: No idea about the year of the head, actually.

Figuring out how to mount my VFD

More VFD stuff

I realize now that both my on/off and fwd/rev seem to be backwards.

I got my Bridgeport fixed up and running again. I had to rebuild the motor, and the variable-disc system. I had to build a VFD enclosure for it as well, and wire it up. I made some chip guards for the ways too, since I had to take the table apart to replace the broken Y axis rear wiper cover. I didn't want all of my cleaning work to be for naught.

I'm going to pick up a 3 Axis DRO kit for it in the next couple of weeks.

Let me know what scales and readout the kit has, i can probably weigh in on the quality.

This is the kit I'm leaning toward https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K52KIY6/?coliid=IPTJLY6TWUOBP&colid=XJZ21KVVDS34&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Boss said 'looks like chinese knockoff faygor scales. .0002 is pretty crappy, but for a personal project lathe its ok' He did immediately catch that it was a bridgeport retrofit. Standard for that type of work would be .0001.
We do 1/2 and 1 micron scales, but we're basically cmm setups. Something we sell would be 1 micron heidenhein scales at about $400 per scale.

Well, I ended up going with this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/361710901814

Ordered it today. It may not be the best, but it is the cheapest. I hope it doesn't suck. Should be enough for my garage shop hopefully.

I picked up some neat scrap from the local surplus place today. I think I should try to get this thing working and hooked up to make something useful.

With the way covers off

Looks like it has a pretty decent motor in it

Tachometer on the end of the ballscrew motor

Fancy sounding bearings

DRO too evidently

Not sure what I've got here. Seems like a great start to something.

I think I wanna add some loops or somesuch to hang tools from. Wonder if I should char the wood a little with the propane torch.

Edit: Thinking I will add a 10mm bottom plate to make it a bit more stable.

Very nice. I think you're right about the 10mm bottom plate. Charred wood is always a cool look IMO

To be fair, this adventure has me discovering more thread types than I have thread gauges for, so maybe it's a BA thread or even UNC, but the BSW gauges were pretty drat spot on.

BA, and BSW as well as BSB are still used in model steam engines. Blackgates Engineering will have most sizes in stock. Not sure who would have them in the USA. For that kind of thing, I usually order from the UK.

Oh, British sports car specialist places should also have BA bolts. They used them quite a bit.

I've been out at Pioneer Farm working lately, although we're off for the summer currently. Neat to see what they're getting up to over there.
