Agreed about not paying more than a grand for it. My first bike is an '88 Ninja 600R, and it's pretty forgiving. Sometimes when I'm really leaned over, the rear wheel feels somewhat unstable, but that might have to do with my suspension or some other stuff. I've gone full throttle a few times easily without any wheelies or other incidents. Edit: Looks like the '89 has 10hp more than the '88.
