I've been lurking in this thread for about a year now, and my patience is finally paying off! Tonight I'll be bringing home a 4 year old Pem from a rescue in Ohio. She had a mild allergic reaction to her last round of vaccinations this morning, so hopefully I'll be able to post some photos tonight if I'm not covered in dog vomit. Thank you all for having such wonderful dogs, they really inspired my decision to go with a corgi!

It's been two nights since I brought this wild animal into my house. This is Tegan!

Her original owner was an elderly woman who took a bad fall, so the owner's family kept Tegan (formerly Gracie) around as an outside dog for 4 months before relinquishing her to the rescue. I wasn't expecting her to be so tiny when I went to pick her up! She's 18 pounds, whereas the other two corgis she was living with at the rescue were closer to 30. Her foster parents said she's never shown any interest in toys, but the instant I squeaked her stuffed bear at home she went into destruction mode. She also already knows fetch, which is great since my last two dogs never quite grasped the "bring it back" half of the game. She's been a perfect house guest so far (with the exception of two accidents), and she's slept right by my side both nights. I'm such a proud parent :3:

Tegan and I had an eventful day yesterday. I put her out on her line while I did some dishes. An hour later a woman knocks on my door. I ask her to wait a second so I can leash Tegan, and the woman looks really excited. She opens my door for me and softly mutters "noooo" when Tegan jumps on her. Turns out this woman lost her corgi the previous night, and someone had seen Tegan on her line and thought it was the missing dog. I took one of her flyers and told her I'd be on the lookout.

An hour after that, I get another knock on my door. This time it's the girl who had called the lost dog's owner, and she wanted to scope things out for herself. I guess she's lived in my neighborhood for a while but had never seen Tegan before, so she apologized for jumping to conclusions. She was super nice about it, but it was so weird to see this level of vigilance. I guess I should be glad, in case Tegan ever gets loose there are people who would try to track her down.

I feel like I need to get a sign or something for my backyard so some lost dog vigilante swoops my dog away for the reward. Little would they know what they're getting into.

drat that sucks. Did the woman seem older? Maybe you can help them out by suggesting going to social media / local news to get the word out.

She already posted on Craigslist and our city's lost dog Facebook page, and I've been letting friends who live in the area know. I'm going to take Tegan for a walk later with a pocket full of treats and squeaky toys to see if we don't have any luck...

I've tried playing a wolf howling on Youtube while both I and my girlfriend howl alongside, and we haven't gotten a peep out of Tegan. My last dog, a standard poodle, never howled until she met my cousin's basset, so maybe that's the key to unlocking Howl Mode.

Today was Tegan's 4th birthday! Her birthday meal consisted of a tiny burger and a cookie sandwich from the dog bakery. She then tried to eat the party horn before being shooed off.

Tegan has destroyed all of her stuffed animals. What I'm having luck with right now is two pieces of fleece sewed together with nothing between them. She still tries to rip the stitching out, but there's very little mess and she loves to carry it around. I also tied one of these to a Nylabone, that's another one of her favorites that she can't destroy.

Tegan was almost 4 when I rescued her, and with her energy level I can't even imagine what kind of hell she would have wreaked as a puppy. Rescues are a great way to go if you're not insistent upon a puppy, you can still find pretty young, healthy, purebred corgis if you have patience.

Tegan has been intensely itchy for the past couple weeks, and it seems like it's getting worse. She scratches herself on her side and neck and nibbles on her paws and crotch all day, and has started waking up in the middle of the night. She's not making herself bleed or anything, but the constant nature of it is starting to worry me. Is this a normal summer corgi thing? I've checked her out and I haven't noticed any visible skin issues, and she just took her flea medication so it's not that. I could kick up the air conditioning or start brushing her every day if I could do anything to help, but should I be concerned that this might be something more serious? I'm ready to call the vet if so.

Tegan ran into a baby corgi at a farmer's market over the weekend. Neither of them quite knew what to make of the other.

Unfortunately, she also picked up fleas somewhere :( Her medication hasn't kicked in yet, so she's been pretty miserable scratching all day and night.

^^ Rescues are a great way to go Camembert, here's a list of major corgi rescues in the US.

Yesterday was a very corgiful day. Tegan and I went to a big dog costume party, and we ran into 8 other corgis, all Pems for some reason.

Tegan went as a monkey, and we ran into a big banana along with his little brother the football player.

Tegan chaperoned a weiner party.

And at the end of the day I got a glimpse of the elusive corgi loaf.

Do any of your corgis get nervous around big dogs? Tegan is perfectly fine around anything around her size, but even smallish medium sized dogs make her start growling if they get too close and friendly. She's fine when they're around and not approaching her, but if they come on too strong she'll growl and eventually snap at them. I don't think her previous owner socialized her very well, she doesn't even really know how to play with other dogs and gets immensely pissed if they get play-rough with her. Guess I'd better start looking up good behavior specialists in Indianapolis...

While I commend you for wanting to address your dog's undesirable behaviour, and while you absolutely can reduce the incidence of the snaps etc, that kind of intolerance to rude doggy behaviour is common among dogs in general and herding breeds in particular. It's not really a socialization issue, but a personality one.

I deal with it in my herder by never milling around long enough to allow prolonged face to face greetings with strange dogs (I'm always walking, even in dog parks), building a solid recall so I can call her away from possibly tense situations before they escalate and doing some basic classical conditioning and desensitization. Also consider cutting out dog parks entirely and only holding play dates with dogs she knows.

It's funny, I never really see Tegan exhibit her herding dog tendencies so I guess I'm just surprised to finally see it manifest. She actually likes being chased by other dogs a lot more than she likes chasing them. I'm definitely becoming more vigilant, moving around at the dog park included, but I guess I still have a lot of work to do on reading my dog. Thanks for the input!

Could you link the breeder's website please? Pembrokes don't have the natural merle gene, so unless your puppy was a mistake of some sort then this is raising red flags of irresponsible breeding. Sounds like they may be breeding Pems with Cardigans. Even though they're both "corgis" they're actually entirely different breeds, with Pems being a Spitz breed and Cardis being closer related to dachshunds. Responsible breeders don't intentionally breed mutts, no matter how cute they may be.

There's also the fact that paying for such a dog is directly contributing to these people breeding more unhealthy dogs, and clearly don't have the breed's best interests in mind.

Sorry if it feels like we're dumping on you, Kingtheninja, we just don't want you to get stuck with a puppy with serious health issues, or for people to irresponsibly breed genetic defects into the breed. If you and your fiancee are flexible there are a number of ways to go about getting a slightly older corgi (or corgi mix, which is what this breeder is offering you). I live in Indiana so my Petfinder searches turn up a handful of corgis and corgi mixes pretty close to you in Michigan. Rescues are another great way to go, here's a list of ones in Michigan. There is also the Ohio Valley Corgi Rescue which is a pretty big organization, as well as several smaller rescues peppered throughout the Great Lakes area. My Tegan came from these folks.

If you can be patient, purebred corgis come through shelters and rescues pretty frequently, and corgi mixes even more often. The breeder you're looking at is asking for an exorbitant amount of money for a mixed breed that was bred purposefully. You can get a dog for much cheaper elsewhere, and won't have the worry or guilt associated with funding irresponsible breeders.

For the people that do clicker training with your corgis, how well do they handle it? I want to get a little more serious with training Butters so I went and bought a clicker today, and watched a couple goon-recommended videos on clicker training. But the first time I tried to pair it with a treat, upon hearing the click he jumped back and ran to the other side of the room. Now he actually will run away from me if I have a treat out  I'm wondering if it's too loud for his big ears, did any of you run into a similar issue when starting to clicker-train your corgi? Admittedly my dog is also a huge wuss but I thought these clickers were supposed to be idiot-proof, and unless I'm going too fast I think I broke him already :(

Try muffling the clicker with a sock or rag so the noise isn't so loud that it startles Butters. Once he gets the idea that "muffled click = treat" then let the clicks get a little louder gradually until he knows "loud click is weird... but = treat." Tegan loves her clicker and always gets super stoked when I bring it out because she knows it means mountains of treats. I'd recommend getting some Charlee Bears or something similar in the low-calorie range so it doesn't spoil Butters' meals.
