A few shots of my 2012 S6 Avant, picked up Thursday. It's a gloomy day, I used my phone and I'm a poo poo photographer, so sorry the pics aren't better.

Note: the flashy number plate is not mine, and will be going back to the dealership within the week to be replaced by a normal one.

Though an avid Top Gear viewer I can't remember that segment, however they only started producing the new (i.e. C7) version of the S6 last year, so I'd say no.

Didn't get the car brand new (has 3,000 miles on it), so couldn't choose options. It belonged to the owner of the dealership I bought it from though, so it is extremely well-specced. Ceramic brakes it doesn't have, however.

As people are posting sports cars, I feel emboldened to share my own piece of folly, which I collected a couple of weeks ago. I have dreamed of owning the now old shape Aston ever since the DB9 was released. After a torrid but fruitful few years with work I have rewarded myself with a weekend/non-family car. I've missed driving with the roof down since parting with my MX-5 (Miata) 15 or so years ago, so I had to get a roadster. It's a car for driving, not going from A to B, so I wanted a manual. And who needs the pointless rear "seats" of the DB9, plus again, it's a weekend fun car, so instead of that model, but equally beautiful (in my eyes anyway), I am now the extremely happy owner of a 2009 manual V8 Vantage Roadster. I am in total love with it.

I posted a pic of my V8 Vantage late last year shortly after I got it. It spent most of the ensuing few months in my garage on a trickle charger, but now the weather is getting nice it's seeing a lot of use. I've made a couple of changes to it: I've had the number plate moved down so the top is now flush with the bottom of the grille and doesn't cover any of it. Really improves the look of the front in my view.

I also found a great company who upgraded the frankly inadequate basic 160w audio to the 700w factory premium version. A fantastic upgrade and it really sounds fabulous now. The extra power is particularly welcome when the roof is down. They also upgraded the satnav screen to HD and gave me the ability to circumvent the stone-age OEM Volvo satnav and use Carplay/Auto via the screen instead. They even secreted the little control joystick for it in the ashtray, and put a discreet microphone for Google voice commands at the top of the instrument binnacle. Both upgrades completed the car for me. I can't think of anything else I want to do to it, except maybe change the tyres to Pilot Sport 4S's when the time comes to replace them. Some people swear by the twin plate clutch modification, but I quite like the heavy standard one. Will see about that one.

It's only been a few months but the excitement of owning and driving it has not diminished one iota. Absolutely love the hell out of it.

I especially like it on a warm evening when there's no direct sunlight and a perfect mix of warmth and a slight cool breeze. Magical. Had an MX-5 years back and have missed the roof down thing ever since. Added bonus with the roof down in the Aston is you get to hear the addictive roar of its V8 all the better.

Just bought a 2017 2.0 Boxster as an employee incentive thingy - going to rota it out to staff at my company.

Drove it back 130-odd miles yesterday from Bristol to Hertfordshire. Used Waze so I could could get off the motorway for the last leg of the journery, stick the roof down and drive some A and B-roads. Going to refurb the wheels and get the windscreen sorted before unveiling it to the team, so it's currently sat in my drive.

Some thoughts (with comparisons to my V8 Vantage):

I'm not generally a Porsche fan. I respect the absolute hell out of them from an engineering and quality perspective, but outside of the 959 poster I had on my wall as a kid (alongside a Countach and F40) I've never found them desirable. They are very, very good cars in general, but also a dime a dozen and I've never found the 911 to be good looking.

I do rather like the appearance of the 718 - much more so than the older Boxster. I quite like the blue of this one, too. Comparing it to my 2009 V8 Vantage though, the Aston wins handily. Then again, I think it and the DB9 are some of the very best looking cars of all time. Also, to be fair, it's rather more money to buy new (though it was only 10k more than this Boxster used thanks to the relative ages).

I like how easy the Porsche is to drive. Everything in the cabin is simple and intuitive to operate. The roof comes down and goes up noticably quicker than the Aston. The V8 Vantage is reasonably agile and no slouch at all in the corners but the 718 definitely feels lighter and sharper. The chassis is incredible, and from my brief experience (and albeit I'm no elite driver) deserves all the plaudits it has received. This comparison is with traction control on for both cars, for what that's worth.

The engine, though. Not so pleased about that. We deliberately went with the 2.0 versus the 2.5 as we felt it would be easier to insure on a fleet, no named drivers basis, and would be enough power for our employees, many of who are quite young. But it feels a bit sluggish, even when taking into account the turbo lag. It's not slow, but I couldn't help feeling there's not quite enough power, and the sound is kind of grindy. Maybe I'm being harsher than I would be, coming out of the naturally aspirated, sweet as gently caress sounding Aston which also has more BHP and torque, but I expected even an entry-level engine on a Porsche to be better than this. A shame, but I'm hoping it should still be enough to put a smile on the faces of my staff, plus as I mentioned, everything else - looks, ease of use, handling etc are great. Looking forward to driving it a bit more.

^^Nice car! The snow adds to the picture, too. Curious what tyres it runs and if you switch for winter?

Speaking of AMGs in car parks...

I finally replaced my S6 Avant, after almost 12 years of ownership. It's been a great family car for that time (when it hasn't been playing up), but time was definitely due for a change, not least after it got smashed into in another car park a couple of years ago; it wasn't the same afterwards and I lost confidence in it. I've been lusting after the E63S for about 5 years, saw a good one on Autotrader and pulled the trigger. It was a bit newer and thus costly than I wanted, but was the right colour etc, they don't come up too often, and it was just time. The newness meant the engine still wasn't broken in, so I had to be very patient and not kick down for 600 miles after delivery. I reached 1000 miles a week ago and... putting one's foot down in sport+ is mildly terrifying. The S6 was fast, but this is another level. It's also much sharper in terms of handling than the Audi, though the flipside is the ride is less cosseting, even in comfort. Not enough to be a problem, though. The tech upgrades over the 12 y/o Audi are nice (though the guy who originally specced the Audi put basically everything on it and I will slightly miss soft close doors and heated wheel), and the boot is even bigger on the Merc, which is useful with two kids (one of whom is a harpist), dog etc. Basically I love this crazy loving thing, even if it's basically too powerful to enjoy properly on the road without being very careful with regard to, like, the law and stuff.

Thank you, and I run Kumho Wintercraft WP72's in the winter, got a set a few years back on the B9 A4 this replaced and honestly they're 80% of a blizzak in the snow for half the price, plus they're one of the quietest winters I've ever used on dry asphalt. Mercedes quoted me $2,400 CAD for Continental winters for this and the Kumho's were $990. Running winter tires here is borderline required, to the point where it will reduce your insurance premium and in some provinces is a legal requirement from November to April.

Ah cool. Yeah it's more borderline in the UK. Only done some cursory research so far, but I read somewhere that the Pilot Sport 4S isn't great under around 7 degrees C, which it does get below here in winter, but I've also read that it isn't dangerously bad or anything and maybe still better than winter tyres in some situations. Not been in a winter/summer switch situation before (though maybe should have been with my RX8, which had summer tyres and was RWD) and not au fait with the logistics and costs, so still working that one out.

quote:

That E63S is very very nice. We get a little luckier in Canada for hatches and wagons than our freedom loving cousins to the south thankfully, haven't seen an E63s wagon in the wild yet though. I'm finding the transition from the Audi ecosystem to the new MBUX pretty easy honestly, there were a few days of moving around favourites and ambient lighting settings so it's still fun but less like a coke-fuelled rave orgy at night. My girlfriend is pretty pissed about no DVD's for roadtrips though, my A4 was a 2017 in the weird point in time where it had a DVD player and you could pretty easily bypass video in motion locks with a few coding changes.

Yeah it's fairly intuitive. My Audi was weird as the rotational selector was clearly designed for a left hand drive car (it was anti clockwise to scroll down) and they didn't bother switching it for RHD cars, but I got used to it. The haptic feedback touch switches on the Merc steering wheel take some getting used to and are not bad, and in the end there are like four different ways to interact: steering wheel controls, centre console touch pad, touch screen on the screens themselves, and voice control. There's a mind boggling array of options, settings, display layouts etc but I found it fun getting to grips with it and it's not too hard to get an overall handle on. Apparently it's a big improvement over the old Merc Command system.

One thing I love is having my entire music collection available. I was a bit resistant to giving up my CD changer, but I realise now I was just being resistant to change; I have all my music ripped into FLACs and was able to fit them onto a half gig USB stick, which the Merc plays like a charm, including sorting by artist etc, so now I can choose literally anything I own, and have hundreds of albums available in an uncompressed format. The Burmester sounds pretty sweet.

Sab669 posted:

Those things don't have a heated steering wheel? Wild.

Either way, 10/10 would still buy if I could afford. Goddamn they look so good.

Apparently not an option in the UK but was in other markets. Maybe cause of our mild weather, but I definitely appreciated it on cold mornings on the Audi. Having said that, the alcantara on the Merc's wheel mitigates this somewhat.

Cool collection! A bit of duplication of cars in different niches though, e.g. the MX-5, S2000 and whatever that is behind the RX-8. I guess the MX-5's hard top differentiates it a bit from the S2000? But then it's kind of an inferior version of the RX-8. Which could be argued to be an inferior alternative to the 911. I guess I'm trying to apply logic/rationale to somethine which doesn't demand it, though. From experience, the MX-5 and RX-8 have their own considerable charms for sure. Nice group of cars, however you divide up your driving time.
