Where's that It's Happening GIF?

The 3 is getting a turbo for 2021:

quote:

The big news is that, as seen in screenshots of Mazda’s dealer system sent to Jalopnik, it appears the 2021 Mazda 3 will be offered with a turbo trim on the sedan and hatchback bodies. It will only be available with all-wheel drive.

More interestingly, there’s the “MAZDA3 HB PP TURBO” in the list. “HB” stands for hatchback, and “PP”could stand for a number of things. Is it shorthand for “Preferred Package,” “Premium Package,” or potentially a “Performance Package?” It’s not yet clear.

My 2014 has thrown false tire warnings at least twice. Like Wibla said because the ABS sensors are used to tell if a tire is out of whack the warning can be set off if there's enough of a pressure differential which can be caused by things other than a tire actually being low. It's fun when it happens on the freeway and you get to play the "Is that sound and/or steering pull the lovely pavement or am I currently grinding up a sidewall and am seconds away from potentially losing control?" game.

Did the 4th gen move to actual in tire sensors?

Checking in with a 2014 3 with 45k miles and I've only had to replace the battery, rear brakes, and tires. Like everyone else has said road noise can be really awful on bad pavement.

TheBacon posted:

I bought that one exact model but the 2014 edition. I bought it with about 31k miles 2.5 years ago and have put about 12k on since. It’s been flawless for me and I very much like it other than lacking a stick. I can’t comment too much on the ACC as even though I have the tech package with it I’ve only used it once to test it out. I don’t know of any specific issues to worry about, mine did have its battery die, which due to the tech package is some stupid expensive special battery, otherwise just changed the oil and normal stuff. The 2.5 has enough oomph when I step on it and I love being able to load it up, got my 65” TV in mine.

If it has iELOOP or a start/stop system then it'll have an Q85 "enhanced" lead acid flooded battery. The short easy solution is: Replace it with a group 35 absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery for about 33% of the cost that the dealership would want for another enhanced lead acid flooded Q85 battery. The AGM is literally better in every way and the group 35 size is so similar in dimensions to the Q85 that you can fit it in and reuse the battery jacket with minimal fuss. A group 35 AGM should be relatively easy to find at any auto parts shop but you can also order them online if need be. If memory serves US dealers want around $600 for one their unicorn batteries (if they even have them on hand) while at the same time you can pop in something like a Bosch Platinum AGM for around $200 that'll perform better and last longer.

I've owned a 2014 2.5L hatch (Touring trim) for six years. Mechanically it's needed a battery, a new HVAC fan, and rear brakes in 80k miles.

The only other problem is the touchscreen has gone wonky, and sometimes gets ghost inputs. I haven't bothered to do anything about it since the touchscreen is locked out over 5 mph, but I think there's a pretty active hacking scene for these infotainments so I could probably fix it (by turning off the touchscreen entirely) if I wanted to.

The biggest flaw is definitely road noise, and that's been true on all three tire brands I've tried.

I'm pretty sure a year or two ago Mazda did an extended recall across a huge range of models for touch screen delamination issues. One of the symptoms was "ghost" inputs.

Mazda taking away touch screen functionality in the newest cars seems bad from a marketing copy perspective but it's probably the most pro-safety move a manufacturer has made since these screen UIs infected the industry. Took about 30 minutes to go from fully assembled to what you see there. Most of it is held in with tension clips. Go slow and don't pull too hard, some of the pieces have wiring harnesses attached. Start to finish took about three hours - most of which was spent extending the harness for the 12 pin/8 wire connector that gets reused so I could relocate the USB/SD hub from the cubby hole below the HVAC controls to the storage bin in the center console. If I had retained the original position I probably would have been done in about an hour.

Software is mostly waiting for the update to install, after it starts you need to open and close the driver side door at about 20 minutes to keep the entertainment unit from going to sleep mid-update, otherwise very little to do but wait.

I also have the hardware and all the tools to do the Android Auto upgrade on mine but haven't because of 50% laziness and 50% fear that I'll introduce a million interior rattles after putting everything back together. Well, I was going to do it one day a while back but couldn't get the software update process to kick off for some reason. This picture didn't really help my resolve to get it over with :negative:

Can't remember what went wrong the first time, but this afternoon I tried again and was able to successfully update from 55.00.750 to 70.00.100A and finally to 70.00.367A. It boots up a hell of a lot faster than the 5x version and Bluetooth is a lot snappier so that's nice.

Now just gotta find the gumption to rip apart the dash and install the new hardware.

Have/had the moonroof on a 1st and 3rd generation with no problems. The Bose setup on the 1st gen had that ground loop popping issue, 3rd gen seems fine, and on the 4th they made a big deal about stuffing the subwoofer somewhere else after some research so presumably it's even better?

Can't speak to the cylinder deactivation. Seems like on a four banger it'd be a great way to turn the whole car into a paint can shaker but I guess they've solved those problems.

In general Mazda news the inline 6 is real:

Car and Driver posted:

We first heard about these plans in 2019 and now have proof that the inline-six exists, thanks to this image showing two versions of the engine and its cylinder heads. We believe the engine on the left is a gasoline version and the engine on the right is a diesel version, as it has a flat cylinder head design that indicates a smaller combustion chamber yielding a higher compression ratio and appears to have more emissions equipment. Mazda also says that it will offer a 48-volt hybrid system in conjunction with the inline-six and a version of the engine that uses the company's compression-ignition-capable Skyactiv-X technology.

The engine in the middle is an inline-four with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and the transmission. This could hint at another hybrid system for longitudinal applications, as Mazda says it is also working on a plug-in-hybrid system in addition to the 48-volt system.

Wouldn't hurt to pull the connections and check for any issues not immediately visible and clean the terminals/connectors with a wire brush or metal scrub pad while you're in there. If your car has a start/stop system or that iELOOP thing disconnect the ground sensor from the negative terminal cable before disconnecting the battery. I'm not sure if not doing that will really hurt anything but the service bulletins make it sound like not doing it imposes the risk of summoning Gozer the Gozerian into this plane of existence.

After looking over that thread I think they offered you the best course of action: Pursue getting a rental via Mazda of North America first and go total war via social media. Yes it'll require time and effort and no that is not fair but here we are. Mazda dealerships work on a franchise setup like most others and as a result "corporate" has limited direct control over the dealerships. The dealership's staffing problems are NOT your problems: They have to figure out how to compensate you.

After enough bad reviews and issues Mazda corporate can revoke the marquee from a lovely dealership and all the logistical support that would normally entail - This is where dragging the poo poo out of the dealership via social media or any surveys you get sent from Mazda corporate comes in. The surveys are an especially powerful way to inflict pain on the dealership so you ought to check your junk mail folder for any you missed and go to town on them.

Overall be cordial to Mazda corporate because at the end of the day they're the ones who can really plant a painful steel boot into the balls of the dealership. Record or don't record the calls, whatever, but at the end of the day Mazda of North America is who will fix this. But demand the rental, you deserve that at least.

For extra spice if you get rented something like a Nissan Sentra and they give you any sort of exit interview just gush about what a better car it was than any Mazda3. That'll get the folks in Long Beach and Hiroshima all wondering what the gently caress is going on.

In general Mazda but not MX-5 but sort of rotary news:

Mazda is pausing it's plans to use small rotary engines to drive generators as range extenders in electric vehicles. Here's Jalopnik's summary of a summary because the source is pay walled:

Jalopnik posted:

Maybe it was just too good to be true, too wonderful to be believed. The Mazda MX-30 rotary range extender has gotten pushed further back, as Automotive News reports:

quote:

The rotary range extender had been expected next year as part of the company’s multiple-solution approach to electrification. Mazda Motor Corp. still plans to resurrect the rotary — but first as a power-assist technology for series and plug-in hybrid offerings.

“We are still considering using rotary engine as a range extender, but the timing of its introduction is undecided,” spokesman Masahiro Sakata said.

Mazda’s commitment, however, may be shaky. Japanese media reports say Mazda has scrapped plans for using the rotary range extender in the MX-30. Mazda ditched the rotary range extender partly because it required a bigger battery that would make the vehicle too expensive, Japan’s Nikkei business daily and Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun reported.
AN said the tech was on “the back burner,” but I’m having a hard time holding on to hope. The non-range extender MX-30 is fine, at least.

In other news the Skyactiv inline 6 appears to be real and will be an option in the upcoming CX-5 refresh. Or maybe it'll be CX-50? Who knows I guess they're in the middle of renaming everything. No mention of the older rumors that Lexus would be using the engine in some cars. Also not sure about the related rumors of a future RWD Mazda 6 using the engine since the sedan seems to be facing the chopping block because everyone is buying CUVs.

Also if you own a first generation Mazda 3 the steering wheel emblem could shank you upon airbag deployment so a recall is being done:

quote:

The 2004-2007 Mazda3 sedan and hatchback are recalled due to concerns that airbag deployment could cause the steering wheel logo emblem to shatter, spraying the driver with harmful fragments. The action comes after eight incidents have been documented outside the U.S. There are two lawsuits in the U.S. alleging related injury.

The automaker explains that “due to an improper material specification, the plastic logo may become brittle over time. In this condition, the logo may shatter during a normal airbag deployment.”

Mazda changed the steering wheel logo material starting in June 2006, switching to a polyester material. These improved logos are not subject to such deterioration.

Owners will be notified by the end of August.

If someone gets in a wreck and survives with a Mazda emblem embedded in their forehead like a Vision-esque infinity stone then Mazda should issue them new cars for life every 5 years as a settlement.

Also is Shift.com legit? Their initial offer on my 2014 3 would pay for almost 45% of a new 3 turbo :psypop:

Looking at those climate controls below the head unit and can't help but feel the 3rd generation and onward are a step backwards. Per the article Mazda's current response is along the lines of, "Well they should't have broadcasted bad data" which while true it's also true Mazda/Johnson Controls should have, you know, coded to handle weird input data scenarios. So far Mazda has said dealers can submit good faith repair requests on a case by case basis but otherwise haven't offered any formal plan to deal with the problem.

Introduces a fun new angle for NPR fundraisers though. "Hello, you are listening to 94.9 KOUW. As a result we will now broadcast the entire archive of This American Life as uncompressed audio files with SQL injection attacks in the metadata, no extensions, and a few gigabytes of randomly generated data as book ends. Any AGM battery should work fine for Mazda3s with the iEloop system. The cars come out of the factory with "enhanced" lead acid flooded batteries made by Panasonic or Yuasa and can be replaced with the same for insane amounts of money or you can pop in a group 35 size AGM from Autozone/Pepboys/Amazon for a lot less and it'll most likely last longer than another flooded battery. In my case for a 2014 Mazda3 I got a Bosch Platinum AGM from Pepboys for like $220 (pre-Covid) and the group 35 size is so similar to the OEM group Q86 I was able to reuse the battery jacket.

When installing don't forget to disconnect the ground sensor on the negative battery terminal first and reconnect it last. The service manuals specify that extra step because, uh, reasons?

My Mazda3 is in the body shop because while it was in a parking lot someone decided it looked better with the front bumper hanging off the car rather than attached to it.

Anyways, rental company gave me a CX-30 which is okay. I just have to ask what sort of drugs were Mazda engineers on when they designed the seek forward/back button on the steering wheel? It's a rocker style button where up seeks one way, down seeks the other, but for reasons known only to Oromasdes they decided to add a third function to this button by making it change audio sources when pressed down. The slightest misapplication of force when trying to skip forward/back kicks you over to another audio source. Do the better trim levels get steering wheel controls that don't suck? The center console volume knob can handle seeking with sideways pushes so why bother with such a terrible quarter-assed effort on the steering wheel?

Thanks I'll take a #5 with a Sprite.

Doesn't seem to matter if the key is in my hand either it just won't lock. It's going in for a service on Friday so I'll mention it to them and see if they can fix it.

The battery in the key fob could be getting weak enough to impact detection range outside the car but not so weak you get a warning when sitting in the driver seat. It might be worth replacing it quick just to see if it resolves the issue.
