As someone who had decided to get a 3 GT instead of Speed3, I'm pretty pissed that Mazda cut the mirror turn signals and interior lighting from the Sport/GT Hatch models to save money. Still there on the speed.

I love the speed, but I live in LA and the roads/traffic in a speed might make me jump out of a building. And I am 100% sure I can't be trusted with a car as fast as the speed.

gently caress you Mazda.

Ok sure its not a huge price, but its big for me ok gosh :colbert:

I've been scouring the net for info on the 2012 3 refresh, specifically prices for the lineup and dates, but I haven't been able to find a thing. Asked a dealer last week and he didn't even know they were getting the SkyActiv engine in the first place.

Anybody hear a peep? I know the earthquake has delayed the roll out a bit, but it doesn't look like they will even be on lots before October.

poo poo. I wasn't really planning on getting the Skyactiv 3, but I at least wanted to test drive it and check out the pricing before I plunked down my change. Thanks for the update, though.

also, since Skyactiv is slated to replace the entire MZR line eventually, we may have to add it to the thread title soon. Past and future, 2gether4ever :roboluv:

The near-flat rear folders are great. I've already gotten a ton of cheap Ikea poo poo in there with no problems. The seatbelts thankfully get out of the way, unlike most cars I've owned.

I believe the bluetooth and CD changer functions the same in the 5 and 3. I actually like the bluetooth a lot more than I was expecting and it's my music option of choice, despite also having the changer loaded with MP3 CDs and an ipod on the aux in. Navigating through discs can be a pain with the changer, but you get track info. It's a trade off.

The manual says that the 3 supports track info over bluetooth with the latest bt revision on the device, but I don't think it works if my googling is to be believed.

I was just looking at the interior shots of the 2012 and I do like the move from red to blue/white on the gauges and screens in the Skyactiv, and the use of more metal trim around the cabin. Might pick up those trim pieces for my 2011 as time goes on.

I really like the Protege 5's. A friend of mine had one in college and sold it to move to the east coast and use the wifes Corolla. He bitches about the decision at least once a month and this was years ago.

Protege 5's keep their value a lot better than the normal Protege's, but they are great cars. Problem is that resale value keeps them in the same range as Civics and such with the same mileage, which are also fantastic commuter cars.

Protege should be just about as reliable as the Civic, but more fun to drive. No significant reliability failures vs a normal 100k mile used car, that I've heard. Either way, good choice, come join team mazda.

This is why Mazda is awesome, by the way.

In the announcement for the final edition of the RX-8, there was a nugget from the CEO/chairman that said they are still developing the next rotary. I know this is an MZR thread and not a rotary thread, but i was pretty loving excited to read that.

I feel like not offering a stick on a small car in top trims is pretty inexcusable (thankfully Mazda is innocent of this. My '11 3hatch has everything + a stick), but small SUVs are directly targeted at 18-28 female drivers, aka the demographic in the world that would say "oh my gawd, i didnt even know they still like, made, manual cars. what are you a poor person??"

The percent of people that will buy the stick, even at base trim, has got to be laughably tiny.

Cygni

Honda, Toyota, and Nissan don't even offer a stick at all on their small SUVs, despite the price segment. Tells ya something. Ford offers a stick on the base Escape, but I've never actually seen one.

Mazda makes a living appealing to that demo, but I honestly don't think there's nearly enough of us to make a stick small SUV with high level trim even worth thinking about for them. I just hope they sell enough of those things to keep developing crazy stuff like new rotaries and speed models for those that care.

I was averaging down near 21 the first few tanks so I expect it to get better. Also try 89 octane. Even though the manual says it isn't needed, the California 89 seems to like my car a lot more.

Dumb side question I'm sure I could find an answer for in 10 seconds if so many of the Mazda forums didn't hurt my brain... I shouldn't have any problem swapping my stock 17in wheels for the 10-12 Mazdaspeed 3 18's should I? Just wanted to check before I started shoppin'.

I've never really considered that before. What's the downside here?

AWD weighs a bunch and the layout is less efficient than front wheel drive (although some AWD systems can physically disengage the system on the fly and run pure FWD), which doesn't help the fuel economy. Generally the penalty is something like 5%.

I think Mazda will be ok considering the number of Skyactiv G/D cars they plan on selling.

Now have a single stopgap Sumitomo HTRZ II with the 3 OEM Yokos, like a total scrub. The OEM Yokos are ridiculously overpriced and also not very good tires, so there was no way I was going to pay to put another on... especially because im at 8500 miles and basically just counting to the days until I can get them off the car.

Judging by past dealings with my local dealers, you will ask a salesman and they won't even believe it exists, until you take them back to their storage lot and show them it in some cars fresh off the truck. This seriously happened to me when I was asking about some stuff on the 2012s.

Theres some issues I can see right off the bat for pulling one of the touchscreens out. For example, the navi (at least in the CX-5) has a little SD card slot in a breakout box installed by the hood release. And I imagine the internet module probably has an antenna unit installed somewhere else in the car.

All that said, I'll be the first to try a swap into my 11+Bose as soon as I can get my hands on one.

I've got an 11 with 20k on it, the only issues I've had are weird tire wear that makes extra rotations a good idea (the stock tires are basically snow tires according to Yoko, and I would recommend a swap or extra set on the earlier side of wear out), and a rattle in the driver side air vent that I need to figure out.

Other than that? It's the same car as the day I rolled off the lot. And it's insanely planted if you find a fun road.
