When I buy new stuff, I have to cuepoint it in Traktor, so why not mix it too?

And at that point, why not release it? (Well, there are a couple reasons, I suppose...)

Just played the final round of a DJ competition, won myself a residency and $1k.

The mix wasn't too bad either, I felt fantastic about it the whole time. I had at least twenty people on the floor at one point :)

I have a measure I call TQ ("Trainwreck Quotient") but it basically falls in line with what a milk crime said - it's not really about anything specific, but rather I determine the TQ of a mix by how many times I put my face in my hands while listening back to it a couple days later.

It's a good mix for me if it has an average TQ/hr of 2; below that, I'm jumping up and down with glee.

it's hard for me to know on my own mixes.

While it's of course best to get someone else to listen to it and tell you, listening back to the recording after a significant amount of time has passed helps give some distance from the artist's seat. I also like to do things like listen to it in the car, where my attention is focused on something else (driving) and if anything sticks out to me in that state I know it's at least jarring enough to break through my concentration when I'm not actively listening and thus "worse" than something where I simply know what I wanted to happen and can hear how it isn't that.

Sometimes I listen to a mix a couple weeks later and I can't hear parts that I felt bad about a day later (or while playing); even more interesting is when something I thought I trainwrecked turns out to grow on me and actually sounds really good once I get over the feelings of "But it's not exactly what I wanted to happen!"

burn(dream) - Fashionably Late

This is my 2013 year-mix (fashionably late, as the title implies). I decided to make this using Ableton for two reasons - first, I can't mix this fast live yet, so I thought it would be easier to do in a DAW; second, I needed a way to get something like a crash course in Ableton.

Well, I don't know about "easier" - it certainly wasn't as easy as "just like a live mix, but with the ability to go back and correct mistakes" like I thought. I probably put 20+ hours into this, which is probably longer than it would have taken me to perfect a live version. But it was a lot of fun and very useful to learn all kinds of editing shortcuts. I look forward to basically never doing it this way again.

Tracklist (yes, some of these didn't come out in 2013. It wasn't really about that.):

bad day posted:

my whole thing is pitching songs up and down

What are your guidelines for doing this? What effect are you going for with it - just trying to nudge things into harmonic compatibility, or more dramatic and noticeable shifts?

I've started experimenting with pitch-shifting up/down one semitone to get things to mix well harmonically and it usually works well, but sometimes I can tell the difference even with that small of a nudge so I'm curious what others do with it.

edit: oh, unless you're talking about repitching things in a remix context, which is totally different.

bad day posted:

Well, for example I noticed this Nick Jonas song Chains had some cool parts but overall the song was pretty crap, so I looped those parts and pitched them down (kind of like DJ Screw? This has always been a thing in North Florida) mixed with some heavily chopped up and edited loops from the All Trap Music sample pack. Took me an hour. I didn't feel like finishing it because I wanted to use it as the opener for a DJ set (still think it needs more claps and hihats) so I just posted it to soundcloud.

https://soundcloud.com/jqam/nick-jonas-chains-jqam-dj-edit

I guess I pitch the song down to where it sounds different but still cool? It's been downloaded like 500 times.

Similarly, this is the remix that someone submitted to the DaFuq thing - same technique but I spent a lot more time on it.

https://soundcloud.com/jqam/usher-i-dont-mind-jqam-money-trap-mix

But I usually do a proprietary remix as the lead-in to any mix that I make, so that seems to defeat the algorithm, which is trying to identify unique waveforms - if you do a remix and just run the sample it'll get flagged, but if you change the waveform and add different elements it'll go below their radar even if you clearly label it as POPULAR ARTIST - POPULAR SONG (UNKNOWN ARTIST REMIX).

I kinda like this limitation. DJs are way too lazy these days - I've always been on the more hip-hop side of things, where a DJ should progress quickly through a series of records.

I did a Taylor Swift song where she sounds like a drag queen. Only 70 or so downloads but I made it kind of late in the song cycle.

https://soundcloud.com/jqam/taylor-swift-blank-spaces-jqam-honey-trap-mix

Note this does not translate into followers - I've had maybe 2000 plays in the last month but a half dozen new followers. I think Toneden is bullshit and will never use it - I just put everything up for download - but I've had way more downloads than plays. I think much like me other DJs troll soundcloud looking for cool remixes, and they tend to download them in bulk for later sorting. So usually by the time one of these tracks has hit 50 plays it's already at 100 downloads.

So if you want people to listen to/play your music out I suggest a few guidelines.

1. Pick a newish song from the Billboard Hot 100.
2. Tweak around with the pitch until it sounds different, but cool.
3. Add recognizable samples and drum patterns.
4. Make it downloadable on Soundcloud.
5. Create and post the song reasonably quickly.
6. Rinse & Repeat.

Also note this does not apply to DJ mixes - only to songs clearly labeled as a remix and not lasting more than a few minutes. People seem averse to listen to or play longer as opposed to shorter files. The winningest strategy for mixes seems to be doing them extremely often, like a podcast, with guest appearances from other DJs and your pot dealer or whoever. Because a lot of people just like to press Play on a Soundcloud page and be casually entertained while they work out and paint and stuff.

This is super cool, thanks for the tips :)

Also let mine lapse when it did. If I want to distribute my mixes, I have mixcloud, and if I want to distribute my music, I'll put it on my own website where I actually own the traffic that shows up at my door. Soundcloud has apparently forgotten who actually makes the content that gets people on their site & looking at ads.

I don't really care about being noticed though. If I did I'd probably still be begging for FB likes and soundcloud follows and whatever other poo poo.
