I absolutely hate pre-planning anything w/r/t DJing. It's a very very spontaneous thing for me, and doing all that pre-work (let alone working on a mix for an entire WEEK!!!) sounds like the opposite of fun to me. I love pulling records outta my box and slamming them on.

i agree. the fun of mixing is the spontaneity of it all. mixes that are super-planned out and mixed entirely in key (using software) are nice to hear and all but it honestly isn't wholly representative of your skill as a DJ. plus, like tyler said, it's no fun! there's nothing wrong with having a few choice transitions in the back of your head that you're primed to use but there's a boundary between mathematical and instinctual (is that a word? if not it should be) that people need to watch out for

jon, i'm downloading your tech mix and am looking forward to giving it a listen. i'm gonna hopefully post a few tech/prog mixes of my own soon.

edit: wanted to point out that alot of my tracks are keyed but i really tend not to rely on them. maybe if i for the life of me can't think of a good next track i'll throw on something that follows the circle of fifths thing

Oooooh, let me get in on this.

This DJ mix was recorded live off the boards at my friend's house on New Year's Eve. I had a glass to my right that people would pour alcohol in as a token of gratitude for awesome music, and you can hear the alcohol start to take effect here and there with the occasional lack of bass or un-beatmatched track. I blame the mysterious Minnesotan hipster with a bottle of absinthe.

This mix is of specific interest because it was the first time I performed using Traktor as opposed to Live, and I think I did a pretty good job of it. It was entirely free-form, and you can hear me having a lot of fun with the filters.

New Mix for all you tech-heads. :)

Sjoewe and I recorded this set this afternoon. It turned out so well, we're thinking of using it as a demo-tape to send to some clubs and organisations.

We recently came up with a name for our DJ-duo: Rahmenfluss. It's German, but doesn't really mean anything other than our two last names combined in a weird way. We figured however that since we're playing minimal and techno having a German name would be the way to go. I'm just making up a good story to cover the fact that it started out as a joke, but then kinda stuck. :hydrogen:

Alright, here's my newest mix. It's my first since switching from the Total Control to the VCI-100. I'm still getting used to mixing with a 4-band EQ instead of 3, but even though I'm not accustomed to it yet, it still makes mixing a hell of a lot easier/more fluid.

90 minutes of nasty tech beats with a little progressive and electro thrown in for good measure. Some tracks are new, some are old, some I've used in other mixes I've posted, most of them I haven't. It's also the first installment of my new "Big Sounds at Good Speeds for Better People" mix series, and I'm considering using it as my demo-ish mix. Anyway, enjoy! As always, feedback would be lovely :)

Sorry for the shameless plugging, but if any of you goons in the LA area have nothing to do next Friday night, UCLA is throwing an EDM event on campus. Its called Electric Love Fest (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=54671147954#/event.php?eid=54671147954&ref=mf): it runs from 6-11 (lame, I know, but it's a campus thing) and is open to everybody (not just UCLA students). I'll be closing out the night (probably will go on at around 10-10:15) with some progressive/tech house.

haha 'edm' as it stands definitely has a lame connotation to it, and i guess the term has become sort of meaningless (is modern top 40 hip-hop/Justin Timberlake/MIA electronic dance music? your call) but for DJs who like to mix lots of genres, its a good descriptor (i.e. "I'm an electronic music DJ, I'm not going to play any hip-hop")

i've been pretty good, just finishing up my last quarter of school, DJing at house parties and frats (who actually are pretty down with our brand of music these days) and the like. hopefully i'll have a new mix up sometime soon. how about you? btw, i don't really know what the consensus on pete tong's essential mix is around here these days, but you should really check out tiga's new mix. really cool blend of techno and electro (or whatever you want to call it)

Don't get defensive about poo poo you know nothing about, everyone makes crappy mixes when they are first starting out. Just keep at it and look for less well-known producers.

using tracks made by well-known producers isn't the sin here though. the scoffable factor at work is the whole attitude of "oh hey who's this guy on the front page of beatport? deadmau5? say, this track 'reward is cheese' is not too bad, i'll use it in a mix". it's lazy and, like terrible horse said, uninspired

there's nothing inherently wrong with playing tracks made by well-known producers. it's just that for every top 10 beatport track you choose to use in a mix, there's a hundred other tracks out there below the surface that will your musical personality better. don't settle, dig deeper!

The external soundunit is more important than the computer you use.
Definately when it comes to soundquality. You need balanced sound. Of course, if you're dj-ing with finalscratch or serato, you don't have a choice.

I used to dj with a pc, only problem compared to mac was the small firewire port, which doesn't give the soundunit power, and you need one more adapter on stage.
Stability-wise, I did have some problems, most related to drivers (gently caress m-audio). That said, I've seen almost an equal amount of problems with macs on stage.
But if I did it all again, I would go for a mac probably, for the little things like the firewire, and lack of midi problems (if your midi controller gets disconnected and you connect it again, it will work immediately again, not so with windows).
But again ,these are of no importance if you're a serato/finalscratch dj (I think).

Thanks for the response. I have the Audio Kontrol 1, so I'm good on the soundcard front, but I feel you on the midi disconnection issues. I've started using duct tape on for my usb cords to avoid that problem. Unfortunately, macs are 100% out of my price range, so that'll have to do for now. I'm gonna take my chances with this I think http://www.officemax.com/technology...e=22-86611312-2

and Jon that description is vague as hell. its probably another faithless track, like the mark knight remix of 'music matters' or something like that

I've been busting at the seams to play with one of these. You think it's worth the $900 (or so)?

I'mma go make a cutting edge rhoombaton/brostep mix for all you. drat sperglords, sperg on!

Maybe I'll put up a "non beatport" house mix later or something, but I'm going to go ahead and make it all DJ Sneak to see how that sits. Should go over well.

your attitude sucks just as much as his just fyi. why should we take an hour of our day to listen to your mix of dated electro bangers and boring prog house yawners? because some girl who doesn't know anything about electronic music outside of Deadmau5 and Fake Blood is feelin it? how is that a good way to market your product?

i would gladly listen to a mix of yours with an interesting tracklist, or if you were a DJ i knew that came through with the goods on the reg. that's how it works
