I played a NYE gig at a house party, and I think I did alright. It was only my 2nd time playing for people, so I'd really like some feedback on what I can do better, and anything else that can be said about my set.
I started off a bit nervous and it shows in some sloppy mixing, but after a while I started having fun, and I think I did pretty well after the first 20 minutes... so, if you think it's bad at first, please fast until about 20 minutes in: http://www.mixcloud.com/alfaj0r/2013-new-years-eve-house-party/

I really enjoyed this! I don't really know what you mean about the sloppy mixing, I think it all sounds great. Really talented and cool, eclectic music choices. What gear do you use?

Ah poo poo, just now seeing this. Thanks so much, I appreciate the kind words. I'm using the most basic entry-level mixer, a Mixtrack Pro. This one I did using VirtualDJ, but I've recently started using Serato DJ, and I think my mixing is a bit better.
All the feedback I've gotten though has been huge about the track selection. To me, that's a huge compliment! :)

If you're going to record video, make it fun to watch. You're just kinda sitting there... needs more dancing or at least heavier head bopping. But congrats on your new purchase! :)

I'm going to record a few mini-mixes as well, to promote for my first Saturday-night gig coming up (May 11th!). Here's the first: http://www.mixcloud.com/alfaj0r/kilometro-cero/.
I've been working on different styles of transitions, having lots of fun playing with timing, effects and a sample here and there. Honest and sincere feedback most welcome.

Got to DJ at a house party last night for a couple of hours, with about 30 people at its peak.
Most people were hanging out at the balcony, where they could enjoy a gorgeous night with a cool sky to look at and everything. So, I played off that feeling, and turned up the energy a few times to even fish a few people into the "dance floor" in front of where I was setup.: http://www.mixcloud.com/alfaj0r/last-friday-night/
There are a few mistakes, but it's mostly from being careless/sloppy while drinking and chatting with people that came up. Regardless, I'm happy with how it went, had a lot of fun trying to read the crowd.

r/beatmatch has a monthly challenge, where ou submit a 15 minute mini-mix following the theme. This month, I had to use tracks from producers with small followings.
I recorded this mix about 10 times, and the best one of the bunch came out pretty good: http://www.mixcloud.com/alfaj0r/july13-rbeatmatch-challenge-dig-deep/, check it out! Looks like I'm doing fairly well, which is a good boost of confidence for me as I hope to start campaigning to get out of my living room and play out more :)

Without having used Ableton at all, I'd say: Don't do 50 songs on your first try. Do 5 at the most. Then 5 more. Then figure out a way to mix those 2 new mixes into 1. Proceed, one small bite at a time.

I got to play at a real party at Burning Man. 5pmish, hot afternoon, the DJ before me was playing some progressive house and smoking hookah. The bar was serving drinks to passer-bys, and a dozen or so people were hanging out at the bar just doing the typical burning man bullshitting.
At 6ish pm, I took over and about halfway through, I realize that the amount of people at the bar and hanging out has at least tripled. poo poo, there's even a handful of people in front of me, dancing!
What a feeling, even if it was a very small scale. I've got a lot to learn, but man I love DJing!

Got lots of compliments after my set at a house party last Sat night. I mixed deep house, tech house, ghouse and people we asking me to describe my style. Easiest way was to say "soulful, jazzy stuff with some wobbles here and there": https://soundcloud.com/alfaj0r/gobble-wobble-2013-1st-hr

Can someone give me feedback on this 45-min mix? I was on vacation for 3 weeks, and this is my first practice since: https://x.mixcloud.com/alfaj0r/back-at-it-2014/

Asking my wife for feedback is similar to her asking me if a dress makes her look fat. I know there's at least one poor transition, but I really would like to know if it's a trainwreck or not.

Also: I thought it might be interesting to have a consensus on how to provide feedback. When I listen, I've been paying attention to not only how technically correct a transition is, but also thinking about stuff like emotional energy and flow, but I'm not sure how to put it all into words.

Alfajor

Heh, while I agree, I think that 2 bad transitions is forgiveable, but a trainwreck is something that is so bad that it just kills all the vibe and is basically unrecoverable. Listening to things myself, it's hard to know exactly where that line is drawn in the grey area. There's a lot of room between "Barely noticeable" and "wow, stop that noise", and it's hard for me to know on my own mixes.

In other words, trying to get feedback on how to tell if it's cringe but get through it, or more like :fuckoff:

Goal was to make a good mix that would fit on a regular audio CD. Nailed the length. The vibe is meant to go between dark and dance, with lots of vocals and a few effects here and there.
Also: whoa, episode 10 of my podcast attempt. While the average listen per mix is about 2, it's cool to see that I've made 10 things I was proud enough to post online :)

That sucks, just as you were probably going to :gizz: all over the place.
Btw, thanks for the spot on Wednesday evening. I rode my bike from my camp, aiming towards 9 and Esplanade. I took 3 to the Man, and then I somehow (whiteout) ended at the temple... from there, I rode some more and ended up at E and 10, where I got my bearings and finally made it over to the Servants of the Secret Fire.
I just listened to recording from then, and it's got too many things I don't like to post it, but it took me back to that awesome sunset feel. And also, apparently Serato can only record to wav up to 2 hours... unless it's AIFF, which I'll be doing from now on.
