Psytrance is the worst of both worlds--tracks are really long (usually 7-9 minutes but sometimes as long as 11 or 12), and you can't really blend them for longer than a minute or two because there's usually too much going on for most of the track.

Yeah psytrance can be pretty tough because pretty much every song starts with a rolling bassline + kick. If you take a decently resonant high-pass filter and put it over said bass and kick though it makes a kind of squelchy acid noise that you can put over another track until a simultaneous breakdown occurs and then you relase the filter to start the track.

P.S. I'm going to ULTRA in Miami this weekend and it's gonna be sick.

I agree on the effects. FX should never be used to cover-up transitions. I'd much rather hear some off-beats or a track simply drop out than hearing a DJ blasting tons of FX al off a sudden. That'll definitely get your crowd looking at you in a bad way.

I resent structuring a set beforehand though. Two main reasons: 1) it makes you completely unable to respond to the crowd and more often than not things you thought sounded great at home will sound only mediocre in a club, track and transitionwise. You can never really anticipate your crowd that well. 2) And maybe even more important, it makes DJ-ing extremely boring. What's the fun in simply repeating a process you've 100% thought up at home when playing in a club? "1:43 minutes untill I start in "random track", then I transition after 33 seconds and then I fade the other track out around 2:54." Making a pie-chart on the how and why of female caterpillar feeding patterns sounds like more fun to me.

The second part of your advice is very solid though and basically the exact opposite of structuring a set. Get to know your tracks, get a feel for them and soon enough you'll start to realize certain tracks might fit well together. Once you do DJ-ing becomes so much more fun and you'll never ever want to structure a set again. That way you also play a different set each time you perform, even though at least 50% of the tracks might be the same.

I get what you are saying, but at the same time I really can't fault someone for practicing a set beforehand, especially if it is a really important gig. Also, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to know exactly when and where two songs are going to match up, just that they are harmonically compatible and so on. No doubt the best advice in either case is knowing your tracks really well.

Speaking of practicing for important gigs...

I'm playing a small festival in Carthage, Missouri on May 23rd, and it would be splendid if one of you gentlemen or women would come and watch me play my set. There's one outdoor stage that will be primarily goa and psytrance, and then another indoor stage that will be more chilled out. From the looks of the flier, it's going to be and especially heady event :2012: :weed:

Going to ditto Threatis and Jimmyjazz. Also, promoters and club owners want free labor more than anything else, so do a little time to help build a good scene or event by promoting shows for a club/promoter, and you'll be in the door guaranteed. Club owners, promoters, booking agencies, and labels all have one thing in common, they want someone willing to put in the time necessary to do what it takes promote themselves and the scene around them. If you think you are more deserving than every other DJ in town, guess again, because that attitude will make you fall flat on your face. Even if you are talented, respect given is respect earned, and sometimes that's worth more than cash. Also, be responsive and adaptable to the crowd. Sometimes planning out mixes in advance can work to your advantage, other times your super inspirational post-bop/polka/IDM mix will suck balls to the folks that just want to dance and have a good time. Basically, take poo poo seriously!
